Speed glacial :( I'm not sure if this will post before my flight. It's taken an age just to open.

Jaimito Cartero Feb 1, 2008 5:55 pm

FT now running on a Vic 20 server?

An updated speed chart:

Snail ----------->
Snot ------>
Rust -->
FT ->

Kiwi Flyer Feb 1, 2008 9:16 pm

running better at the moment - yay!

mikey1003 Feb 2, 2008 11:35 am

No better here:(

coachrowsey Feb 2, 2008 11:37 am

Still painfully slow.

Mary2e Feb 3, 2008 8:41 am

It's half dead again :(

While the forums seem to come up, MyFlyertalk appears not to be working.

Can the database be that active on a Sunday morning [in the US] ?

Cholula Feb 3, 2008 9:13 am

It's zipping along just fine for me this morning....although 5 minutes from now I may have to eat my words...and everything is in working order including MyFlyertalk.

Well... only 3 more days until two weeks have passed.... the anticipation is..... :D

PTravel Feb 3, 2008 1:24 pm

Very erratic here -- freezing and timing out one minute, working fine the next.

planeluvr Feb 4, 2008 3:41 pm

Poking along once again.

MrAndy1369 Feb 4, 2008 4:11 pm

Whew, sure am glad to hear I'm not the only one... I thought it may have been my connection, since some other sites were operating slowly, but looks like I'm not alone in this. It's definitely sloooow - sometimes not responsive even. I feel like I'm back on dial-up - even worse, perhaps?

Hopefully this will be fixed soon - but do keep up the nice work and communication, admins. =)

RichMSN Feb 4, 2008 4:33 pm

It's miserable. If I didn't like FT so much, I would've walked away weeks ago.

In the real business world, when something is performing this badly, companies do whatever they can to restore good service as soon as possible. Apparently, this isn't the real business world.

It's incredibly miserable today.

I really did think that one of the upsides of the sale was moving the FT servers to something that was rock-solid. I guess not.

Jaimito Cartero Feb 4, 2008 7:08 pm

Probably all those ads slowing it down. :(

Pat89339 Feb 4, 2008 9:19 pm

Is something really being done to fix this problem?

coachrowsey Feb 4, 2008 9:36 pm

I'm just like some one else said if I didn't like FT so much I would've left long ago. It is slower than slow now.(If this goes:mad:)
I don't know how much more I can take before I'm gone.
What's the latest ?

Over the past few weeks we have been working to determine the root cause of the periodic site slowness. We are seeing a direct correlation between the volume of searches (especially advanced searches) and the site slowdowns. What we are finding, is that during periods of heavy searching, the ability to post new messages and view existing posts is held up while the long running search queries run against the database. We have also noticed a correlation between periods of high moderation activity and site slowness.

We think we have a plan in place to allow the community to continue to do these two important functions (search and moderation) while keeping the site responsive to the community. We are planning to make a couple of substantial changes that we feel will fix these unacceptable slowdowns.

1) We will be replacing the default MySQL database search with a powerful, scalable search engine that we have developed. This search duplicates almost all of the existing search features and is capable of handling the high level of traffic that FlyerTalk receives. We are planning to roll out this new search tonight. Shortly after (next week sometime) we will be releasing an updated version that includes the few remaining features of the old MySQL search. We feel that the current search is the single biggest contributor to the site slowness and that this new search will make a big difference.

2) The second major change that we're planning to make is to add a second database server to our environment. This will allow us to split the traffic across two databases. By doing this, we'll be able to serve all thread/post views from one database and offload the more intensive thread/post writing and moderation to a second database.

We appreciate your patience as we work through this problem and always welcome your feedback as we roll out these features.

Thank you,
Kevin Hayes

Kevin,

Not sure how what you wrote is different than what John wrote 13 days ago.

I take it we will not see this implemented as quickly as John said?

We have two big solutions being implemented. We are adding a second database server in a master/slave configuration. So all writes will go to one server, which will get mirrored on the other, from which all reads will come. Second, we are finally deploying our new search. We had to work to add in a lot of the existing functionality, and almost all of it is there now. The upside is that it will be significantly more efficient on the server load. Between the two, this should make a very significant improvement in the site's performance.

They think the new search will address most of the issues, that goes out tonight. My fingers are crossed on seeing improvements b/c this has been painful.

Kevin -

1 - Will FT be down at all to accomodate the implementation of the new search engine?

2 - What is the timeframe for the second database server?

Thanks

KevinSours Feb 5, 2008 2:32 pm

We decided to do this a little early -- the new search is in place. We didn't take the board down, but there was a short disruption in the search availability.

I don't know if the current speed is the result of this, but I can't remember FT being as snappy as it's been during my current session.

Kiwi Flyer Feb 5, 2008 9:13 pm

Very slow right now.

coachrowsey Feb 5, 2008 9:32 pm

Still slow here

terrier Feb 5, 2008 9:57 pm

The site's fine in SEA in terms of responsiveness at the moment, but it wasn't worth the cost - the new search is killin' me.

JOUY31 Feb 6, 2008 10:49 am

Working like a breeze :). A welcome improvement ^. Thanks.

itsaboutthejourney Feb 6, 2008 10:19 pm

because of FT slowness, I've switched from wifi to Ethernet.... big improvement in the other tabs/sites I have open, but still sloooooow with FT.

ed1 Feb 14, 2008 6:25 pm

Site is VERY SLOOOOOOWWWW Now!

Site is working at a crawl, resulting in at least one quadruple post.

What's up (or should I say down)?

JOUY31 Feb 14, 2008 6:32 pm

Dreadfully slow. :(

wharvey Feb 14, 2008 6:34 pm

Took me over 25 minutes to load this forum.... that is ridiculous.... glad to see the new search improved the speed.... NOT!

HIDDY Feb 14, 2008 6:45 pm

Slow as a week in the jail.:td:

PTravel Feb 14, 2008 6:49 pm

Something is very, very wrong. It took me 30 minutes to load FT (I hung in there only so I could report the problem here, but I see I'm not the only one).

ed1 Feb 14, 2008 6:57 pm

I hope someone from IB tech is around to fix it.

Kiwi Flyer Feb 14, 2008 7:05 pm

Yup. Slow here too.

Punki Feb 14, 2008 7:06 pm

Well this is certainly one way to stop post padding. :D :D

Not really. I've seen one quadruplicate post and one triplicate post so far.

it was very very fast all week up until now and it's worse than a snail going in reverse. in addition, once you get hung up trying to log in, if you quit and try again or click on the "click here if your browser does not redirect you" link, all the threads come up as read

i'm adding that everyone of my replies hangs so long to post long that if i open the same thread in a new window, my reply has already posted . please get this fixed

ed1 Feb 14, 2008 7:39 pm

I haven't been able to get the tech index to reload for over an hour and now we can add a duplicate post to my previous list.

lin821 Feb 14, 2008 7:41 pm

It's been so excruciatingly slow this evening. :(:(

Is the system getting the Valentine bug or the new search being worked on? It took 90 minutes for my 3 posts and 1 PM. That's so unacceptable to us FT junkies!

Edited to add:
2/14/08 8:43 pm Central Time

Things seem to be back to normal speed now. At least FT pages are loading as usual.

If the slowness was part of the scheduled system maintenance things, I think we would appreciate IB team (or whoever is responsible) giving us a headsup announcement, like we used to see at the top of the forum pages, so we can "try our best" to cool off from FT for a short while.

It looks like FTers are not getting any headsup in the last two weeks or so for the system "upgrade" (the new beta search turned on around 2/5/08) or "maintenance" (the one just happened in the last two hours). Can we at least be told in advance so we can be "prepared"? @:-)

wr_schwab Feb 14, 2008 7:58 pm

Site unusable from about 7:45pmish to 9:30pmish EST. Site unresponsive.
