An update -- the tech team is in the process of adding additional server resources to FlyerTalk to cope with an increase in traffic. We understand and apologize for the frustration this has been causing and, despite all appearances, we're working hard towards a solution :p

you're still giving it too much credit ...

Thanks for the update, Mikel.

We have two big solutions being implemented. We are adding a second database server in a master/slave configuration. So all writes will go to one server, which will get mirrored on the other, from which all reads will come. Second, we are finally deploying our new search. We had to work to add in a lot of the existing functionality, and almost all of it is there now. The upside is that it will be significantly more efficient on the server load. Between the two, this should make a very significant improvement in the site's performance.

Thanks for the update, John. Can you share the schedule for this work, please.

coachrowsey Jan 22, 2008 12:51 pm

All I can say is a few hours ago it was so slow I just gave up:mad:

Both should happen in the next week or two, and possibly sooner than that. I'll get more detail and keep you updated.

Looks like it is getting worse than just a few weeks ago.

Last night, it was taking 5 minutes to load certain forums..... really irritating.

I do hope the timeline of two weeks is the worst case scenario.

If it takes 2 weeks I'm most likely done. It is slower than you know what now:mad::mad:

Just not cutting it tonight:mad:

I don't know if its time of day I use this machine, but this one has linux with mozilla, and i don't seem to have as bad a timeout/response issue when I use it. Hmmmm.

This would be very welcome news ...

planeluvr Jan 24, 2008 1:25 pm

FT has been slow off and on all day.:td:

coachrowsey Jan 24, 2008 1:43 pm

I have not even been able to load up a page untill now.

MiamiAirport Formerly NY George Jan 24, 2008 1:46 pm

Also having time out issues. I am far from a computer geek, but with the ever growing popularity of this site could it be the current server just can't keep up with amount of activity going on.

coachrowsey Jan 26, 2008 4:45 pm

Just when I thought it was getting a little better:mad:

DTW-HomeyFour Jan 28, 2008 5:20 pm

I've been getting reset connection errors periodically today - for example, I couldn't get to flyertalk.com for the last 10 minutes!

Me too. It's been pretty terrible the past month or so, off and on.

Maybe it's a subtle hint that it's 12:30AM where I am and it's time for bed.

Edited to add: With a broadband connection, it took over 20 seconds for the page to load with this post.

Mary2e Jan 29, 2008 7:33 am

Ditto.

Has anyone looked to see if some of the huge threads can be causing the problem? IIRC, this was an issue years ago, and I've seen it mentioned on other boards with extremely large threads.

On most, they close threads when they reach a certain number of posts and start a new one to keep this problem from happening, if it is the case in this instance.

SanDiego1K Jan 29, 2008 8:25 am

Response time is painfully slow today.

WOW... that would be an improvement for me at times... :D

kennycrudup Jan 29, 2008 5:07 pm

... and while I'm sure these "partner sites" add to FTs revenue (and aren't under the control of FT or IB), what I've been noticing for a long while is that my page loads are getting held up while my browser tries to get answers from "*.doubleclick.net", "*.googleanalytics.com" and "*.tribalfusion.com", among others.

I figure there's nothing that can be done about them, but maybe this note will go into a file somewhere and eventually something will get changed.

Have you tried ......., with Firefox? I still get some delays, but not as bad as some are mentioning.

I primarily use the Opera browser on Linux, but you rustled up a braincell, and I just realized their new betas have similar functionality.

ditto here.

I was at a cocktail party this weekend and I mentioned FlyerTalk to someone who's starting to travel a lot. He responded that it was a good resource, but that it's slow and hard to search. I nodded. He want on to say there was potential if someone took over for the "kid" running it. I laughed, but come here to tell JohnMcG and Mikel that this slowness is not good for new people sampling the FlyerTalk "brand".

JohnMcG Jan 30, 2008 7:27 pm

I fully agree, nroscoe...we hope to have the fixes done in the next week or so.

Thank you very much, JohnMcG ^

RichMSN Jan 31, 2008 11:58 am

Awful right now.

FlyerTalk is seen as a serious resource - it was even quoted in the London Evening Standard after the AC pilot incident heading to LHR this week - but I can't spend much time here lately due to the frustrating (lack of) speed.

HIDDY Jan 31, 2008 1:12 pm

Terrible performance, continual slow loading and resets.:td:

I'm in total agreement!!!

RichMSN Jan 31, 2008 2:35 pm

I didn't think it could get any worse, but it has.

I'm starting to wonder how much of a priority this is for IB.

Ginger K Feb 1, 2008 11:47 am

It's been getting worse all week, and does not seem to be time of day related. It's slower than my mother in law's dial up connection.

Exactly.

It took over a minute to load this thread and almost a minute for this reply window to open.

I don't get it.

When HOM owned FT, we had these issues at times, but they were usually resolved the following day at the latest. This has been going on for weeks.

dcutcher Feb 1, 2008 2:23 pm

Me three

though, oddly enough, I CAN get into this thread, albeit after a barely acceptable wait.
I time out entering the UA forum, though.
"Won't you tell him please to follow my lead, PUT ON SOME SPEED, Oh, how WE need..."
:(

mikey1003 Feb 1, 2008 4:53 pm

Still unbelievably slow...loading forum pages----waiting for reply block----then replies takes forever.

I have ....... and foxfire, so it is not an add issue here. Tried IE and just as bad.

Gonna run off people...that's not good!
