Switch over to http://web2.flyertalk.com. That ones running fine.

Connected using the address provided by Cholula.
No problem at all with speed. Super

Thanks, Cholula

airbus320 Oct 22, 2005 8:35 pm

great suggestion with the web2 address. ^

Jenbel Oct 23, 2005 4:46 am

main address is back to being slow :( was working for me until about 20 mins ago...

wanderlust_jules Oct 23, 2005 8:04 am

I'm having loads of problems both yesterday and today. I thought maybe something was wrong with my browser (Safari) but Explorer is worse.

RSSrsvp Oct 23, 2005 10:50 am

FT has been extremely slow for me this weekend on both IE6 & Firefox. Every once in a while it speeds up, but most of the time it is moving at a snail's pace. :(

SEA_Tigger Oct 23, 2005 2:34 pm

I am now home in SEA and neither www.flyertalk.com nor the IP (http://64.78.185.85/forumsfr.shtml) are working. Still 404.

web2.flyertalk.com continues to work and speed is fine, however most of the graphics on the page (including all buttons and emoticons) will not load. Stalls with 26 graphic items remaining when posting and 36 on viewing.

All of this is on IE6.

KyRoamer Oct 23, 2005 4:05 pm

Still busted at 6:06 PM EDT

Awful. Most of the time I get Cannot Find server messages.

SEA_Tigger Oct 23, 2005 5:39 pm

All three access points are now working fine for me.

Scratch that. Both the primary web site and the IP are now no longer working (the main one crashed during a post and won't come back).

web2 still works, but now is not downloading most of the graphics again.

yogi Oct 23, 2005 6:17 pm

Getting request timeouts most of the day on www server. Makes it fun for testing proxy software (handle those random errors).

Once again, same here.

airbus320 Oct 23, 2005 8:27 pm

Is there a technician on duty?

blackjack-21 Oct 23, 2005 9:18 pm

Very slow for me since last night. Three attempts just to get signed in now.

bj-21.

FT via IE6 slowish but functional. Firefox, which I prefer to use, just hangs. Same story last few days. Anyone know why one works but not the other?

SLF Oct 24, 2005 4:17 am

www.flyertalk.com at 64.78.185.85 seems to be timing out.

I'm accessing the web2 address with Firefox and it's working fine. The regular address hasn't worked for me consistently since yesterday.

edi-traveller Oct 24, 2005 6:49 am

Yup - varies between being very very slow - to getting a 505 error.

What's going on?

SEA_Tigger Oct 24, 2005 7:53 am

Most likely the primary web server (which I imagine is the IP address one, as well) is failing. FlyerTalk has two web servers which load-balance page requests between them. When one goes down, usually we get intermittent service - requests sent to the good server work, and requests sent to the bad server 404. So you can be working and then crash as your requests are bounced between the two boxes.

The IP address usually works because it bypasses the DNS (which is where the load-balancing is done, I believe) and goes directly to the server itself. But since whatever server the IP address I have is not responding, that must be the bum sever.

I am assuming web2 is now inundated with page requests, so that might explain why it is just sending text and omitting most of the graphics - lower bandwith needs. There might also be some bandwith throttling at the server-side to help.

And yes, there are FT staff, but sometimes they are offline during the weekend or they are busy trying to identify, isolate, and correct the problem and therefore do not have time to come on here and give us an update.

But rest assured they will fix it and provide a post-mortem of what caused the problem.

As users, the best thing we can do is try and be as specific as possible in reporting what we are seeing/experiencing to help the staff focus their efforts.

And to that end, I am on web2 right now and it downloaded all the graphics and speed remains fine, as it has all weekend.

Same here.

ScottC Oct 24, 2005 8:06 am

The last thing I want to do is sound negative here, or criticize the FT staff, but is there something that can be done to prevent downtime in the weekend? This isn't the first weekend FT has been down and I am sure 1000's of people are affected that don't know about the "web2 trick". It just seems a little weird that a board this large can have so much downtime and not be taken care of till monday mornings...

SEA_Tigger Oct 24, 2005 8:13 am

I guess it's like anything - have to balance cost vs. benefit.

Since most of us get this service for free (though I have done the "Premium" option so I am now a "paying member"), HOM may have decided 24x7 staffing is not cost-effective. While most of us would probably argue otherwise [ :) ], FT really isn't a "mission critical" application for HOM.

web2 is now dropping graphics again and web1 and IP are not responding, so it looks like the underlying issue(s) remain with us for the moment.

doc Oct 24, 2005 8:13 am

No web2 necessary here for me.

All is seemingly quite well thankfully.

Thanks again, in advance, for your assistance in trying to keep it that way for everyone.

Mark

24/7 monitoring doesn't require a staff member to be on duty, all you need is a simple monitoring service and a pager.

GUWonder Oct 27, 2005 2:33 pm

Is the site slow right now? It seems to be crawling slowly.

FlyingToFly Oct 27, 2005 2:49 pm

The website is painfully slow at the moment. What is wrong? These kind of things seem to happen often at FT...

SanDiego1K Oct 27, 2005 3:21 pm

Site is slow for me, irregardless of whether I use:

I'm using FireFox.

daph Oct 27, 2005 3:40 pm

Usually fine but a little slow the other day and terrible today.

flying fool Oct 27, 2005 4:29 pm

SLOW; SLOW; SLOW!! Not only do I get errors on every page, as noted by another poster and apparently related to a running ad, but it's loading every page at a snail's pace and has been for a few days for me, too.

I'll sign off for now, as it's worse than old dial-up!! Hopefully, this is a short term problem, as it was once before.

FWAAA Oct 27, 2005 5:53 pm

Exrtremely slow now for over 3 hours. Pages take 30-60 seconds to load; replies are lost as it times out, etc.

The rest of the internet is blazing fast for me - it's only Flyertalk that is crawling.

FWAAA Oct 27, 2005 5:59 pm

Very fast now! Thanks!

No sooner had I posted the message above but FT was back to normal. Thanks!

John at Webflyer Oct 28, 2005 9:50 am

Both servers are running fine -- looks like there are some other issues that I need to look at.

Thanks very much, John. Again, FWIW, things have been fine for me, if that helps you at all! :)

flyertalk painfully slow

Just now. From east-coast DSL line otherwise performing well and currently delivering 1.3 Mbps down and 330 Kbps up.

Problem mostly avoided by using "web1.flyertalk.com" instead of www.flyertalk.com.

cblaisd Dec 16, 2005 7:05 pm

Same here. But each server is bad at times.

FlyinHawaiian Dec 22, 2005 11:38 am

Since about 10 a.m. Pacific time, pages are taking about 30 seconds to load for me on web1 with a T1 line. I was timing out on www.flyertalk.com and web2.
