I wouldn't have expected this to be the case given how SPG's competition handles these. For example, I thought the Hyatt suite upgrade awards merely have to be requested prior to expiration.
FWIW, the FAQs on SPG.com really should address this type of situation because I have to imagine it is fairly common. I wasn't easily able to find any information on FT about this using a few different search strings in the SPG forum.

You do not need to cancel, and you don't want to because that puts you at the end of the queue. I had eight pulled out of order last year, and a simple email fixed everything.

I have had poor luck too. It clears more often if applied > 5 days early. Seems like at the 5 day mark, someone manually (or the system automatedly) looks at it and tries to upgrade. After that, it just gets lost in translation. Again at 1 day prior, it gets reviewed but the success rate there is pretty spotty (perhaps has to be approved by property).

I agree with others. I had SNA that will expire on 4/30 due to the system not picking up on the SNA that expire 1st before the extension. I have 6 expiring on 4/30 and used the ones that should not have expired until end of year. If I had known, I would have modified. SPG should have said something

2 (related) questions:
1) Is priority entirely based upon whomever requests the SNA first and nothing else?
2) What if, for instance, I have a stay on 3-Nov for 5 nights and somebody else has a stay on 1-Nov for 5 nights. If I request my SNA on 1-Mar and he requests his on 1-Jun, and only 1 suite is open for 3/4/5-Nov, who gets the suite?
If so, that basically means that you're only "competing" with people who are checking in on the same day as you--assuming no suites open up last minute. Correct?

The system will supposedly start looking for availability 5 days before check-in, so the other guy gets the SNA.

hmmm. good question I did not have the walk out into your own little patio which I think they have but nonetheless it was nice and roomy. It was on a higher floor with the bedroom on one side where they TV could swivel in the wall and on the other was the couch etc., Nothing wrong with it whatsoever ........plenty of room for the two of us for a two night stay.

Suite available for sale, yet the hotel refuses to give it as a SNA
I have two reservations for the Royal Hawaiian in Waikiki. I have applied SNAs and the relevant suite shows up available for sale. I contacted the Plat concierge and they contacted the hotel agent who told them that they don't have to give it for an upgrade because they are still trying to sell it for money. I am within the 5 day period. Is that correct? The agent also told the spg representative that there are other criteria like seniority, etc that the system looks for before it allows the upgrade. This is my first time using SNAs and I'm pretty frustrated with the process. I hope it is just a one time fluke.

Unfortunately it is not. FDCs and CSRs have been known to make up bogus rules to explain why they do not need to follow rules. However, as stated here many times, what shows for sale online does not match what is available to be given as an upgrade (same name does not mean same number). Also mentioned many times is the SNA system has a few glitches that may prevent you from getting an upgrade. You may want to contact one of the Lurkers with your rez details and ask them to check to see if there is something they can do.

Will one of the Lurkers weigh in on this? I spent about 30 minutes with on-line chat and then follow-up call to Platinum concierge line yesterday because of this very issue and no corrective action was taken. I've earned 30 SNAs and have used 19. 11 remain in my account, but as of April 2014, I will lose 5 even though I was awarded 10 in December 2013 that don't expire until December 2014.

Thanks William. The accountant in me still can't make this work but I've had a lot of success with upgrades this past year with both the SNAs and even moreso, just regular platinum upgrades - so I think that I'm still coming out to the good.
