Okay, I signed up for foursquare. And I'm usually not this dense, but

How do you "check in"??? What does that actually mean?? Logging in? Searching for something in particular?

Ok. Figured it out. Have to do it on your phone....

And then I deleted my account. Way too intrusive for me.

Folks, please explain how this is intrusive if you turn off most of the default settings?

You don't actually have to use your phone to check in (FourSquare's help tells you how). That's what I plan to do when traveling to other countries where I don't have a SIM card.

I can't figure out how to check in without a data phone. Can you elaborate?

EDIT: I see it now. You need to access mobile website, not regular one.

Doubt that FourSquare is paying any of this. It is more of a marketing tool for Starwood.

They get people to show their friends through FourSquare/Facebook where they stay and get free publicity etc.

I found out about this promo about 20 minutes before it was posted here, by checking in on Foursquare and seeing the little "special" icon by the Sheraton where I was staying. Woo hoo! I'm psyched about the extra points for something I already do anyway

I think this is one of the more exciting SPG promos in recent memory, not because its rich with points, but because it's fun.

I love foursquare, and one thing that is often overlooked are the tips left at a location by either your friends or anyone who checked in. I find that info very helpful and it's usually info that I trust.

I've never played Foursquare games...I've heard about them on other forums and think they're kind of silly...winning "Mayor" titles and such. But I'll jump for some easy Starpoints...figure that's an easy $7-10 back for a few clicks.

As for intrusion of privacy, I already use credit cards and I usually fly to my destinations, traveling under my real name and ID. When I check into a Starwood, I tend to remain there at least 10-12 hours.

I guess I'm just saying that if the Man wants to track me, it doesn't matter whether or not I post my location on Foursquare. He already has enough data to do it, and then I remain stationary plenty long enough for him to dispatch a silent black helicopter to come and get me.

I really don't get the paranoia about social media privacy.

From now till July 2011, this special does require a confirmed reservation to earn Starpoints for foursquare check-ins. I believe this means that your reservations need to be updated with the correct SPG details in order for the Starpoints to be awarded successfully.

Do you have to check in (in the conventional sense) at the hotel front desk before you check in with Foursquare, or does it not matter which order you do it in as long as you have a reservation for that night?

Want to make sure I don't mess this up...

Ditto, can't find the list in any of the T&Cs on the various sites. Can any of the lurkers post a link or the full list? Thanks!

No, you don't have to actually check into the hotel first. As long as you have a reservation and the stay is completed, it doesn't matter when you check into Foursquare.

Hmmm. I thought Thyetus answered this already?

Is there some other way it should have been said? Any property that participates in SPG will be participating in this offer.

To me, it's one in the same. There are some Starwood properties that don't participate in SPG, but "All SPG participating properties" or "All SPG properties" would equally account for those that do, no?
