I've only looked at a few days, and a few routes, but WN's flight fares haven't decreased all that much despite their complaining about travel trends.

In two days the MAX will have been grounded for one year permitting many airlines to cancel purchase contracts without penalty.

The Financial Times: Boeing hid design flaws in Max jets from pilots and regulators

The 238-page report details how Boeing attempted to minimise both the regulatory testing and pilot training required to fly the new Max, which was being rushed out in an attempt to compete with the Airbus A320neo.

It found the company successfully persuaded the FAA not to classify the anti-stall system as “safety critical”, meaning that many pilots did not even know of its existence before flying the Max. In doing so, Boeing concealed from regulators internal test data showing that if a pilot took longer than 10 seconds to recognise that the system had kicked in erroneously, the consequences would be “catastrophic”.

The report also detailed how an alert, which would have warned pilots of a potential problem with one of their anti-stall sensors, was not working on the vast majority of the Max fleet. It found that the company deliberately concealed this fact from both pilots and regulators as it continued to roll out the new aircraft around the world.
I'm never getting on this f***ing plane.

What was going on in Boeing's corporate culture over the past decade or so to move them so far away from a quality-first culture of compliance and control to this sort of cost avoidance behavior?

According to the report:

"Multiple career FAA officials have documented examples where FAA management overruled a determination of the FAA’s own technical experts at the behest of Boeing. These examples are consistent with results of a recent draft FAA employee “safety culture” survey that showed many FAA employees believed its senior leaders are more concerned with helping industry achieve its goals and are not held accountable for safety-related decisions."

In other words, Boeing found it less expensive to attain political power than it did to maintain integrity and quality.

With the current demand curve it is hard to envision why an airline would bring the planes back into service for some time. Prospective customers do not need another reason not to fy.

McDonnell Douglas merged with Boeing twenty years ago and the MD corporate culture took over.
