Frequently Asked Questions about Rapid Rewards Visa

1. What are the different card types?
non-business Plus, non-business Premier, business Plus, and business Premier.
Premier cards have a higher annual fee but give 6000 anniversary bonus points vs. 3000 points for the Plus cards. It is generally agreed that you will get the bonus for a new account if you have not had that particular type of RR Visa card before, but Chase appears to be in the process of changing their policies (see below).

Note that prior to RR-2.0, the two types of RR Visa cards were "Classic" ($29 to $39 annual fee) and "Signature" ($59 to $69 annual fee). Plus and Premier are new products for purposes of the (soon to be retired?) "One bonus per product" rule.

2. Is there a zero annual fee version?
No.

3. Can I "churn" these cards? How often can I reapply for the same type card and get the signup bonus?
The official rule has recently changed more than once. Closely check the T&C of your offer as different rules may apply to concurrently available offers. The Inflight offer linked above states:
This bonus offer is available to you as long as you have not received a new cardmember bonus for this product in the past twenty four months.
Referral offers have been seen with a limit of one individual and one business bonus per lifetime (although T&C read by the CSR taking the application differed from those printed on the referral offer).

Actual results sometimes differ from the official rule. People have reported receiving the bonus a second time on the same card type at various intervals even when the bonus was officially once per lifefime per product. Please post your results here.

As of mid-May 2015 Chase has cracked down on applicants who appear to have much less than average attachment to their cards. Specifically, more than 5 applications within the past 24 months is the approximate cutoff: Chase crackdown on churners: Please report your RR Visa approvals/denials here

4. Can I cancel the card and still collect the anniversary bonus?
Yes. Reasonable people disagree on whether this crosses the line of exploiting the card issuer. The anniversary bonus is described a reward for having been a cardmember for the past year, not as a reward for paying the next year's annual fee. Based on that description, the bonus has been earned even if you then cancel the card. As a practical matter, there is a window of only a couple weeks to accomplish this. The bonus points will post on the billing date of the statement containing your new annual fee, which will have posted earlier in the billing cycle. You have 30 days from posting of the annual fee to cancel the card and have the new fee refunded.

5. Does the annual fee count toward the spending threshold for the signup bonus?
No.

6. When will my signup bonus post to my Rapid Rewards account?
If you have met the spending threshold at least several days before your statement date, the bonus will normally post 2 days after your statement date, not when you actually spent the money! Cutting the timing or the spending amount too closely is not advisable. Mistakes can happen.

7. My statement shows sufficient purchases to meet the spending threshold. Why didn't I receive the bonus?
This can happen if you met the spending threshold just a few days before the statement date. It appears that accounts are flagged for meeting the spending threshold independently of the statement generation process and less frequently than daily.

8. How can I determine my statement date?
You should call Chase (phone number on back of card) to check your next statement date. Credit card companies are now required to have payments due on the same numerical day of each month, which means closing dates vary throughout the year. (Before reforms enacted after the financial crisis, RR Visa cards had constant closing dates rather than constant due dates.) The closing date should remain within the same small range unless you request a change of your payment due date. When you request a change, Chase normally can delay your next statement but cannot accelerate it. If you are unwisely taking the risk of cutting your timing too close, you should call Chase more than once to confirm your next statement date.

9. I accidentally crossed the spending threshold in December rather than January. Can I return a large purchase to bring my spending back below the threshold?
Unlikely. It appears that the sweep to check spending threshold does not un-flag an account previously flagged as meeting the threshold. It's not even clear whether the sweep counts returns at all. If you realize the error before the statement closes and you have a payment due date change available, you might be able to push the December closing date into January.

10. Can I apply for a credit card in my wife's name but my Rapid Rewards number, so that the points funnel into my account?
People have tried this. Some have succeeded. Others have reported that Chase closed the account and posted no Rapid Rewards points. Do you feel lucky? Programs can become very aggressive when they suspect members of defrauding the program by using non-matching names. When you game the system you are only on solid ground if you follow the rules to the letter. Breaking the rules means that the program can penalize you if they want to, and believe me: They want to.

11. Can I scam this system in any other way? I just had a clever idea.
There is nothing new under the sun here on FlyerTalk. If it relates to established program rules and it isn't discussed here you can be confident your idea will not work.

If they ask you to call them then you need to call. If they just give a message saying they need more time to decide then it's optional.

Usually if they tell you to call it's to confirm some silly detail just to confirm your identify (cell phone number or something else).

Also, you got a high limit because that takes you up to your Chase total limit. For example, let's say your limit is $50k. You can expect to shift some of that credit line to new SW card to get it approved. If you cancel one of your $10k cards and apply for a $10k card you'll probably get an instant approval of $10k. If you cancel your $30k card will probably get a new $30k instant approval. If you drop your $30k card down to $20k and apply for a new card you'll probably get a $20k instant approval.

I'm obviously applying concrete terms to the above, which isn't 100% concrete, but that's essentially how it works.

I've seen numerous conflicting reports about whether to call in as it could be something simple as an identity question. I have not called in up to this point and was curious if anyone else has recently had this happen. Also, assuming I do not call in for an identity question or question about moving around credit, will the app still be able to move through the system?

I just got approved yesterday for both Chase cards with the 50,000 points each.

I have a few questions and hope someone can humor me and answer them.

1: Do I need to have the full 11000 points within 3 months of accepting these cards or do I just have to worry about spending the $4,000 within 3 months to get CP? Meaning, can I take more time to get the last 6,000 points needed?

2: What is the best time to spend the $4,000? If my closing date is the 16th of every month, could I safely spend it December 17th and after? EDIT: I think I know the anwser to this. Spend after December statement closing date and about 5 days before 3 month due date.

3: What is the best way to get the remainder 6000 points. Can I still buy Choice Points and transfer those? Do they still count? How many points and when should I buy them? Also after the December 16th closing statement or does it not matter?

4: Is pro flower still an option?

Thank you in advance for answering these questions. I want to make sure I am going to do this right and not mess up.

Christine

Send a SM to chase. Request your closing date to be December 5th. Make sure you don't spend the 2k before that. After December 5th, spend 2k or whatever is left you need between December 5th and whatever your 3 month grace period. That will ensure that your 100,000 pointswill get posted in January. Then complete the remaining 10k. Through spending, southwest portal or qualifying points transfer. That will ensure you the companion pass for all of 2016 and all of 2017. Total of 2 years. Hope that make sense. Try not to over complicate things cause that's when mistake happen.
The remaining 6,000 points can be spent any time in 2016, right? Does not have to be done within the same 3 month window?

Any harm in not calling? I have a good bit of apps from this past year and if the call prompts a manual review the odds will not be in my favor.

The remaining 6,000 points can be earned (via spending, flying, etc.) throughout 2016 but of course the sooner you cross the 110,000 point threshold the longer you have CP.

Thank you for answering one of my questions on the companion pass. For some reason I am really stressing about this. Can I go through this and you can just answer me back with a 'yes' or 'no' about it being correct?

1: I was approved for my 2 cards October 16th. I need to call Chase and find out when my "complete by" date is (probably January 15th or so).
2: I need to make all purchases (or at least not hit $2000 per card) until AFTER my December statement closing date (right now my payment due date shows 12/12 so does this mean statement closing date is probably around 12/15?), but before January 10th to make sure they post in time.
3: If I wait with spending all $2,000 per card until after my December statement date closes, I maximize my points, and only need 6,000 more points
4: I can buy My Choice points and transfer those to SW to meet the remainder requirement (20,000 My Choice points?) for about $200 or so. It takes about 4 days for those points to show. At that point I should have enough points for the CP.

Question: how/where do you transfer My Choice points to SW?
Should I change my payment due date or leave it be?

Yes, I'd expect statement close of Dec 15th - Complete spending between that date and a few days prior to the date from #1
3: If I wait with spending all $2,000 per card until after my December statement date closes, I maximize my points, and only need 6,000 more points Correct - everything spent on card after statement date from #2 counts toward 2016-2017 CP with Jan statement
4: I can buy My Choice points and transfer those to SW to meet the remainder requirement (20,000 My Choice points?) for about $200 or so. It takes about 4 days for those points to show. At that point I should have enough points for the CP. I believe you'll need 24,000 Choice Points to get 7,200 SW points to exceed the 110k (or do 18k transfer with some extra SW spend). You can transfer from within your Choice account when logged in and it will take about 10 days to transfer (even though they say 6-8 weeks

Should I change my payment due date or leave it be? I'd ask for statement due date of the 30th, buys you about 10 more days from the current date.

About my statement due date though: if I postpone my statement due date, my December statement would come in later as well, yet my complete by window stays the same, making my window to spend money shorter, right?

So right now: December statement is about December 15th. Making it such that I can spend between December 16th and January 14th.

If I postpone it until end of month my December statement would come end of December, making it such I only have between end of December and January 14th to spend.

Am I thinking this through right?

Can someone please update the Wiki with instructions about crossing the threshold? I don't have the patience to do it but this question has come up multiples times in just the last few weeks and people seem to not want to go back to read the last few pages that answer the exact same questions.

Not sure how hard this is... Change your due date to early December. (Check). After your statement closes in early December, do your $2000 spending before your 3-month window closes. Not necessarily before b/c then you have to do more spending in 2016 to cover the remaining 10k points. (Check). January, get your 104k points. (Check). Anytime after December statement, do other $6k spend (or w/e way you decide to get the points.) (Check)

You're confusing the due date and the closing date in the above. If you change your due date to 12/30 then your closing date is going to be 12/3 or so. So then you'd have between 12/4 and Jan 15th to complete the spend. Gives you 10 extra days.

Ah, makes sense! Thank you!

I am going to pay 2 of my kids' college tuition on the cards, which I can pay any time in December or January. So not really sure I need extra time, right? Does it matter if I pay in January or end of December or does it make zero difference? I verified statement date is December 15th right now.

FYI got auto approved for the Premiere card last week. So I'm halfway there.

I don't think it matters by rule, but personally I like to at least put a few weeks between it so it looks like I closed it and had closure remorse or something in case I need to recon call.

Just make sure you're not bumping up against your total Chase limit so that you can easily get auto approval.

If your minimum spend period ends in mid-January, then making the tuition payments on say January 2nd or 3rd should work out just fine. You want to make the purchases at least 4 or 5 days before the minimum spend period ends in case it takes several days for the purchases to post (normal is 1 to 2 days to post but I've seen a few "normal" transactions take 3 or 4 days to post). If the tuition payment is processed electronically then you should be fine with that approach but I'd leave a week or two of cushion if it's a payment that has to be processed by a human in an office.

Wait, what? Once can by roughly 24K Choice Points for a couple hundred dollars and those will transfer to 7K SW points to fulfill the 6K balance gap after the two 50K bonuses are earned? That's way cheaper and quicker than coming up with another $6K in spend. Thanks for that info. Learned something new today
