Frequently Asked Questions about Rapid Rewards Visa

1. What are the different card types?
non-business Plus, non-business Premier, business Plus, and business Premier.
Premier cards have a higher annual fee but give 6000 anniversary bonus points vs. 3000 points for the Plus cards. It is generally agreed that you will get the bonus for a new account if you have not had that particular type of RR Visa card before, but Chase appears to be in the process of changing their policies (see below).

Note that prior to RR-2.0, the two types of RR Visa cards were "Classic" ($29 to $39 annual fee) and "Signature" ($59 to $69 annual fee). Plus and Premier are new products for purposes of the (soon to be retired?) "One bonus per product" rule.

2. Is there a zero annual fee version?
No.

3. Can I "churn" these cards? How often can I reapply for the same type card and get the signup bonus?
The official rule has recently changed more than once. Closely check the T&C of your offer as different rules may apply to concurrently available offers. The Inflight offer linked above states:
This bonus offer is available to you as long as you have not received a new cardmember bonus for this product in the past twenty four months.
Referral offers have been seen with a limit of one individual and one business bonus per lifetime (although T&C read by the CSR taking the application differed from those printed on the referral offer).

Actual results sometimes differ from the official rule. People have reported receiving the bonus a second time on the same card type at various intervals even when the bonus was officially once per lifefime per product. Please post your results here.

As of mid-May 2015 Chase has cracked down on applicants who appear to have much less than average attachment to their cards. Specifically, more than 5 applications within the past 24 months is the approximate cutoff: Chase crackdown on churners: Please report your RR Visa approvals/denials here

4. Can I cancel the card and still collect the anniversary bonus?
Yes. Reasonable people disagree on whether this crosses the line of exploiting the card issuer. The anniversary bonus is described a reward for having been a cardmember for the past year, not as a reward for paying the next year's annual fee. Based on that description, the bonus has been earned even if you then cancel the card. As a practical matter, there is a window of only a couple weeks to accomplish this. The bonus points will post on the billing date of the statement containing your new annual fee, which will have posted earlier in the billing cycle. You have 30 days from posting of the annual fee to cancel the card and have the new fee refunded.

5. Does the annual fee count toward the spending threshold for the signup bonus?
No.

6. When will my signup bonus post to my Rapid Rewards account?
If you have met the spending threshold at least several days before your statement date, the bonus will normally post 2 days after your statement date, not when you actually spent the money! Cutting the timing or the spending amount too closely is not advisable. Mistakes can happen.

7. My statement shows sufficient purchases to meet the spending threshold. Why didn't I receive the bonus?
This can happen if you met the spending threshold just a few days before the statement date. It appears that accounts are flagged for meeting the spending threshold independently of the statement generation process and less frequently than daily.

8. How can I determine my statement date?
You should call Chase (phone number on back of card) to check your next statement date. Credit card companies are now required to have payments due on the same numerical day of each month, which means closing dates vary throughout the year. (Before reforms enacted after the financial crisis, RR Visa cards had constant closing dates rather than constant due dates.) The closing date should remain within the same small range unless you request a change of your payment due date. When you request a change, Chase normally can delay your next statement but cannot accelerate it. If you are unwisely taking the risk of cutting your timing too close, you should call Chase more than once to confirm your next statement date.

9. I accidentally crossed the spending threshold in December rather than January. Can I return a large purchase to bring my spending back below the threshold?
Unlikely. It appears that the sweep to check spending threshold does not un-flag an account previously flagged as meeting the threshold. It's not even clear whether the sweep counts returns at all. If you realize the error before the statement closes and you have a payment due date change available, you might be able to push the December closing date into January.

10. Can I apply for a credit card in my wife's name but my Rapid Rewards number, so that the points funnel into my account?
People have tried this. Some have succeeded. Others have reported that Chase closed the account and posted no Rapid Rewards points. Do you feel lucky? Programs can become very aggressive when they suspect members of defrauding the program by using non-matching names. When you game the system you are only on solid ground if you follow the rules to the letter. Breaking the rules means that the program can penalize you if they want to, and believe me: They want to.

11. Can I scam this system in any other way? I just had a clever idea.
There is nothing new under the sun here on FlyerTalk. If it relates to established program rules and it isn't discussed here you can be confident your idea will not work.

Do you guys know of a way to spend $4k? I don't think I have that many purchases or renovations coming up any time soon. I know I can do PayPal, but that means I have to spend 4% on fees.

I've had a Chase SW card since 2011, easily passing the 24 month restriction - but still have a couple questions?
- How long after canceling do I have to wait to apply for new cards?
- Should I transfer my existing credit limit to another card? I don't have any other Chase cards at this time.

Buy gift cards at places you shop anyway. For example, if you shop at Walmart. You are just giving them your money a bit early to make a deadline. Just don't lose the gift cards.

If you want to do some of the spend in Dec., the important date is your statement date, not your due date. If your due date is the 23rd, then your statement date is probably the 27-29. If that is the case, you are not safe to complete your spending until after that date in Dec. If you hit $2k before that date, there is a very good chance your points could post on or before the 31st and ruin your chances for the companion pass.
Thanks! I neglected to mention that I was approved on October 1st, the same day I applied. Also, they are not giving me a statement for October. My first due date is November 23rd. So making it say, the 3rd of the month makes sense to me. That way, all my spending for the second half of December will hit along with the bonus in January and not have to mess around with 'will this post or not' since what will matter is when it is spent, not when it posts. Let me know if there is anything I am missing!

I was approved for both of my cards Sept 30th. The first payment for my plus card is 11/19/2015, the first payment for my premier card is 11/10/2015. Based on approval date what would be the best way to set things up so that I could earn the CP for most of 2016 and 2017? I've read a lot of the thread, but it still is a little murky for me as far as changing the due dates, etc.

Thank you!

So I just applied for the personal plus and premier. Instant approval for the plus, but "we need more time to consider your application" on the premier. I've seen conflicting advice in other parts of this thread on whether I should call or just wait. Anyone care to comment on if/when I should call?

Thanks for the help!

I have very recent experience with this as I applied for both the Personal Premier and Personal Plus this past Friday evening. I know how you feel since I had one card approved that evening but the other was still pending.

First I applied for the Plus card. Used a referral for it, so I had to apply by phone (long process- every detail has to be spelled out on telephone application.). My application went to pending and I was NOT given a reference number or a message that I could call Chase to ask about it. Was pretty disappointed.http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/images/icons/icon9.gif

I then applied ONLINE for the Premier card, also Friday evening. My application went to pending but I got the "Thanks for applying. Please call us as soon as possible at US 1-800-527-7419 ............. " I was also given a reference number. And the message ended with "We just have a few more questions regarding your request for credit." Sounded promising so I
I called right away. I spoke to a very pleasant agent and answered questions to confirm what was on my application. After the agent reviewed it some more (on hold a couple of minutes) I was asked whether I would consider transferring some of my credit from my other Chase cards to open the Southwest Premier. I agreed and was able to choose the cards to transfer credit from and how much to transfer. My card was approved while I was still on the phone. Whole call was very pleasant. My Southwest Premier card showed on my Chase account online by the next day. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/images/icons/icon11.gif

I have been pondering about whether to wait and see what Chase does with the Plus application or call about it for the last few days. I was somewhat hesitant to call after reading stories about poor outcomes from phone calls, particularly since I have applied for MANY credit cards in the last 2 years (both from Chase and from other banks) and had been approved for the Southwest Premier card just a few days ago. I finally decided to call this evening. Used the same number I used to call when my Premier card application went pending Friday evening even though I didn't have a reference number for the Plus application. Nice agent looked up my application with my SS#. Agent could see I had also just applied for the Premier card, but didn't seem to care. Asked me questions to confirm what was in my application, then took a few minutes to review everything. Once reviewed agent asked me if I would consider transferring some of my credit from my other Chase cards to open the Southwest Plus. I agreed and was able to choose the cards to transfer credit from and how much to transfer. I was told that I had to transfer at least $5000 to open the new card. Agent arranged the transfer and opened the account for me. It immediately showed up on my Chase account online. I can see both cards there now! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/image...ons/icon14.gif

Will use the 2 cards to get my first Southwest companion pass ever, hopefully in January 2016.

In short, although I thought I might be making a mistake by calling about my pending Plus application tonight, I am really glad I did. YMMV. Good luck with your decision.

Thanks for sharing! I just recently got started signing up for credit cards for bonuses and a little MS to meet the minimum spends quickly, so I'm sure I'm making mistakes here and there and have a lot to learn.

I just got my first Chase card last month (Ink Plus), although I'm an AU on a couple of my wife's cards. I have also had checking/savings accounts with Chase for 10+ years. I'm thinking they will auto-approve one and will verify that I have an existing relationship with Chase and the other will get approved fairly quickly. Of course, when I called the automated status line I got the message that the Chase signup wiki suggests often results in denials, so who knows.

Why do you think you were making a mistake. I always call within 1-2 hrs if not right away when my decision goes into pending. Never been denied for a card. They usually just need some missing info or want you to transfer some CL around. That's all. Once again, for people who are still missing the point, since it makes no difference - CALL on pending decisions sooner rather than later. If first agent doesn't agree, Hang up and Call again - upto 3 times.

Just applied for premier and plus, got instant approval on premier and had to call recon for the plus. Was on the phone about 10 minutes total and all I was asked to do was switch around some credit lines.

Maybe a dumb question, is there a minimum credit limit needed per card to qualify for the 50k offer on each?

EDIT:
Found the answer to my own question here:

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/24534122-post2294.html

In case anybody else wasn't aware, looks like any card with any credit limit is eligible for the 50k offer.

Does anyone know the answer to this question? I'm in the same boat here. I've had my Plus card open since around 2012 (well beyond the 24 month restriction). I'm aware that I need to close it in order to re-apply and re-open the Plus card to get the new offer. How long should I wait after closing the Plus card to re-open/apply for the new one?

FYI got auto approved for the Premiere card last week. So I'm halfway there.
