We're not talking about a few hundred dollars, flights from Australia to Europe or the US are closer to $2K (cheapest economy, and north from there). No doubt they will expect some breakage, and more importantly they'll expect (and if necessary incentivise) people to retain credit rather than claim a refund.

Maybe I'm being too cynical, and Alan Joyce knows something we all don't, so is happy to keep selling these flights. Or I'm not being too cynical and it is boosting cashflow into the airline.

EDIT: Since I posted this a short time ago, they do indeed to have stopped selling flights in Nov/Dec. I am sure I looked two hours ago and saw QF1/2 on sale, now it is not.

Every business with the slightly link to inbound tourism is screaming to open the borders.
Do not forget the real estate and (commercial) education industry. Moreover, it's difficult to sell services and industrialized products, when your sales people cannot travel to clients overseas.

A follow on to the delay of international flights

20 May (news.com.au)---->Qantas expects debt levels to decline but expects a loss over $2bn, announces redundancies for international crew
<snip>
Qantas has revealed further job cuts for international cabin crew and wage freezes while the coronavirus pandemic inhibits overseas travel.

In a trading update on Thursday, the major airline unveiled a new voluntary redundancy program for international crew as part of additional cost cutting measures.

Roughly 6000 workers remain stood down across the group, and the new redundancies are extra job losses on top of the already 8500 roles that have been cut from the company.

Interested in updates here. I can see QFA selling tickets (incl transit) ex SIN in 2022. Id like to book but not sure if they will fulfill the ticket given they are not even transit approved in SIN and could suspend international operations again. Given AU arrival caps already place travel into Oz at high risk, its a punt to book with QFA?

Qantas's fly flexible policy is quite generous.

Well fortresses New Zealand is planning to open to medium risk countrys from early Q1 2022. So hopefully Australia will follow suit soon, the hardest part will be getting all of the states being on the same page to re-opening.

The airlines can say what they like. The only certainty now is when you have arrived at where you want to go. Its not even certain when you hold a Boarding Pass prior to departure.

a day or 2 ago NSW premier announced NSW will reach 70% vaccinated by end of Oct & 80% by mid Nov, when things will return to normal.

Australia now has negligible cases cf. UK who seem to average about 30,000 new cases a day. Cases don't mean deaths. UK is open right now to almost anyone who's had 2 shots & they can fly to most EU countries. No quarantine, no lockdowns. Yanks can fly to UK now & soon, probably in next week or 2, poms can fly to USA, with no restrictions or quarantine, except must have had 2 shots. So I'm planning right now, on going to U.S./Canada end of Dec 2021.

Is that for QFA operated flights only, not codeshare, right? So BAW>QFA or AFR>QFA bookings are not safe?

Yes sentiment is changing thus my interest in flying Dec/Jan too, although this may not necessarily change policy on the ground (or air in this case). Here's hoping!

I admire your optimism. I on the other hand a planning to spend Christmas in Singapore for first time.

Yes, we have a flight booked to Australia early December. We will apply for permission in November, ,before we are booked, for an exemption to leave Australia again at the end of January, but we are nasty Australia citizens living abroad, and actually even worse - we're pure evil as we've already had two stints in HQ. I suspect we won't be back for Christmas. Even if targets are reached, it will take months of dithering for them to decide how to change the rules and what the new rules will be.

I would suspect no, those bookings wouldn't be safe (assuming BAW is British Airways and AFR is Air France).

Australia won't be opening up in anyway before mid-late 2022 - and that's me being optimistic.

I know the 80% vaccination target has been put in as a target to reach "Phase 3" - however, they haven't actually detailed how things will work and how long after that target is reached for changes to be made. Further to this, and crucially, the state premiers need to sign this off - and you have three premiers in VIC, WA and QLD who are more than happy to keep Australia locked indefinitely.

The way things are going now, the start of 2022 may see every country accept some level of international quarantine-free travel - except for Australia.

Sentiment changes quickly and depends on what is the flavour of the month.
