Anyone get channel 9 on a reconfigured CO aircraft yet?

The following mainline aircraft types allow passengers to listen to ATC. The legacy nomenclature is "Channel 9," but on many types it is accessed by selecting "From the Flight Deck" on the "Audio" menu of the seat-back entertainment, then pushing "Listen." Legacy pmCO FAs may not know what "Channel 9" is, as none of their a/c had it prior to the merger.

A319 - removed
A320 - removed
B737 - no
B747 - yes
B757 - only pmUA 757-200s operating p.s. flights (i.e. 28J seats)
B767 - yes, both pmUA 767-300s and pmCO 767-400s
B777 - yes, both pmUA and pmCO, except the new Hawaiian and domestic high-density configuration aircraft
B787 - no

UA management has said they are "studying" ways it can be made available over the streaming content-equipped planes (i.e. A319, A320, 737), but no schedule has been announced for a decision or implementation.

Anyone get channel 9 on a reconfigured CO or PDE aircraft yet?

The following aircraft types have "From the Flight Deck" installed (commonly known as "Channel 9," as that's the location it is found on audio handset selectors):
pmUA 777-200ERs
pmCO 777-200ERs
pmUA 777-300ERs
pmUA 777-200As (high density, first class only)
pmUA 767-300ERs
pmCO 767-400ERs
pmUA 757-200 (28J p.s.)
pmCO 757-200 (16 p.s.) -- To be retrofitted with cabin refresh per Oct 2019 announcement

[pmUA A320 and A319 aircraft have had it removed. It is not installed on any 737s, 787s, nor pre-2019/2020 refresh pmCO 757-200s (16J p.s.) or pmCO 757-300s.]

I'd bet on getting "it's broken"...

When I fly on a 757, I stow my bags and then walk up to the cockpit to ask about Channel 9. In the past, I'd usually get an enthusiastic response, and had one captain invite me in to check out the charts, etc..

Now-a-days, I get a stern "no" or "it's broken" or "we don't have it installed"

My last six flights have all had Channel 9 turned off..

I believe there are plans to make Ch. 9 available on at least some PMCO aircraft.

However, it doesn't make much sense to me for the airline to make it available on CO aircraft when an apparently considerable number of UA pilots currently keep it turned off. I also wonder if the CO pilots will even turn it on to begin with if it does become available.

Good buddy of mine who is UA 757/767 Capt. still makes sure Ch.9 is on because he knows many passengers like it (he frequently flies LAX-HNL/OGG/KOA/LIH and also the LAX-JFK p.s. service). But it appears he may be one of a dwindling number of pilots to do so.

Yes, you could do that.
But, if it's off, it's probably been switched off/left off intentionally.
It's one of the first steps in our pre-flt setup. Most crews know if the switch is on or not.
Asking probably won't help.

Personally, I don't turn it on.
And I specifically tell the f/a's to NOT say that it's broken, because that would be a lie.
It's switched off, intentionally. I think I explained why, somewhere else, maybe earlier in this thread.
So, asking wouldn't change my mind.

That being said, folks are always welcome in my cockpit, to come up and say hi.
When people stick their head in I invite them in, offer the jump seat to them if they want to sit and chat.
Kids always get my seat and a photo op if their parents want it.
I hand out maps and flt plans too if they want souvenirs.

If we were allowed, I'd invite you up in flight.
However, the Feds would have something to say about that.
It's too bad too. The view really is better.
There are spectacular sights to be seen from our vantage point.
When riding in the back I'm always amazed that some people NEVER look out the window.
Their loss.

Which is why I have a feeling CO management will (and should) make it a policy that Ch9 is on ALL the time unless there is a quantifiable operational reason why it should be turned off (and security nonsense is not such a reason).

I'm amazed at this as well. Many folks pull the shade down and never look out the window at this beautiful planet we live on.

Awhile back, I flew roundtrip in F IAH-POS on CO. There's lots to see outside on this route: islands, reefs, and usually the coast of Venezuela on the way home (I believe the specific routing can depend on weather en route and/or winds aloft - and please correct me if I'm in error here). However, on the way back from POS, I was the only one in the F cabin to have my window shade open (and only by half in deference to those folks who wanted to watch the stupid, idiotic movie).

Same type of deal with flights over the Sierras of California and over southern Utah and Colorado as well. Absolutely stunning scenery out there in the great American West with many other examples to be seen....

Anyone get channel 9 on a reconfigured CO or PDE aircraft yet?

I apologize if this has been mentioned elsewhere, but I couldn't find it

With some newly reconfigured Continental birds out there with E+ seats and the like, I'm wondering if anyone has been on a Continental flight with Channel 9 on.

I'm curious how CO pilots will be with this awesome UA benefit and I'm so excited it's staying on. I just wonder how long it will be before co pilots begin to use it on available aircraft.

I can't even get it on UA aircraft. I think I'm at around 10% for the year.

Thank you. This kind of interaction is the kind of thing that makes it fun to fly, rather than the plane just being a bus to get from A->B.

(And if it's just a bus then I can pick the cheapest bus.)

By the way - is there any monetary reward attached to collecting a pile of GTEMs? I have considered writing one for pilots who leave ch9 on, but I wouldn't want to insult them. GAs seem to be happy to get them so I assume they aren't totally useless.

There appears to be quite a bit of reluctance among the UA pilots to make Ch. 9 available.

Right after Christmas, we flew MSY-DEN (Ch. 9 on) followed by DEN-LAX (Ch. 9 off).

Out of MSY, the lady A320 Capt. even made an announcement that Ch. 9 would be on. However, this appears to be the exception these days.....

Nope!
In fact, I have no idea what a GTEM is.
I would assume that most pilots also don't know what they are.

Stuff like that is rarely passed along to us.
I have had 1000s of kids, and adults, up front for photo ops, handouts, etc.
In 20+ yrs with the company I have NEVER had a passenger thank you letter passed on to me from mgt.
You might imagine why fewer and fewer crew choose to do much public interaction.
Sometimes easier to move "the bus" from A to B, then go home.

UA frequent fliers get given a small number of pre-printed thank you notes (i.e. name/MP number/elite level) with a space to write a message of appreciation.

I bother to use them because I hope they make someone's annual appraisal a little less painful if nothing else.
