There appears to be quite a bit of reluctance among the UA pilots to make Ch. 9 available.

Right after Christmas, we flew MSY-DEN (Ch. 9 on) followed by DEN-LAX (Ch. 9 off).

Out of MSY, the lady A320 Capt. even made an announcement that Ch. 9 would be on. However, this appears to be the exception these days.....
