OCTOBER 2016 UPDATE
LAX-JFK TRANSCONTINENTAL FLIGHTS:
1. Same day turns possible on the E-jets and morning 738s.
2. Bonuses now based on fare paid.
3. As of OCTOBER 2016, best fares are now around $1000. Fare tends to rise a few hundred for 2 pax. Fares can also occasionally rise for no discernible reason, but the price spikes have thus far proven to be temporary. Fares have the trend to drop during the year. Keep checking for fares in the $700-$800 ranges for best possible pricing.
4. Airport hotels with shuttles - Crowne Plaza Panama Airport & Riande Aeropuerto. The CP is slightly closer; the Riande is slightly nicer. The CP shuttle leaves the hotel every :00 and :30 and runs 24 hours but they seem to leave a few minutes early as it had left when I went down at 4:00AM on the dot. Also, note UberX charges a US$14 surcharge on top of the ~US$2 fare. CP has poor sound isolation, I could hear my neighbors on both sides including talking, crying baby etc. Had to wear earplugs to sleep.

6. PTY Customs:
NOTE: LAX-JFK NO LONGER VALID FOR LOWEST FARES (effective OCT 2016)
If you want the transcon bonus, enter the search with a connection in JFK. (e.g. LAX-JFK,JFK-MIA,MIA-PTY,PTY-JFK,JFK-SFO.) You can play around from there to get the best deal. Some of the better deals do not start and end in the same city (e.g. start in LAX, end in SFO may be cheaper than start/end in LAX).
Also, it's possible on the outbound portion to time it so you have no more than a 60-minute layover at JFK or MIA (though note that some of these flights aren't available on weekends). While yes, JFK is notorious for delays, this rarely applies for inbound red-eye flights. Also, note that AA 28 below is sometimes "hidden" if you're looking on Google Flights inside a much more expensive trip; that does not necessarily mean, however, that you can't get it for one of the trips under $1,000 (in other words, try it out to see).

I'm not sure I understand. You would have to "position" to SFO or LAX for one of these fares, not position to CCS.

this thread is still live (ie: not moved to discussion), yet i cannot find near this fare (or the $500-600 from a bit back) lately. dead (the the time being) or am i missing something? and, obviously the goal here is for the LAX-JFK-LAX portion to book into A to get the extra 24k RDM. i'm having a hard time finding that now at any doable fare (again, was easy to find about a month ago).

There are still a lot of dates out there for a 1-2 night stay for $738-760.
Which is still pretty dang close to the $702 in the thread title. And still ~4cpm in Biz w/ the 2 longest hauls in lie-flat, which is pretty outstanding for an MR in J without using an SWU.
Much, much better than going to Asia in Y for 24k EQM, even it's a big more CPM.
edit: Also, I don't think anyone was able to get the LAX-JKF-LAX portion in A, if you read the whole thread closely. Doing that makes the fare soar. A shows up on the MIA-JFK leg and I on the rest.
So it basically calcs like this.

It is still booking into A/I. I just booked my 4th R/T on this routing today for an April run @$837. Although the fare for this trip is up, my trip booked for mid-March was also in A/I and picked it up for $660. My fares for the 4 trips are at the low end, $660 and the high end, $834 with the others in the mid-low $700s.
Total EQM = 18,864 / RDM = 43,000+ YMMV

This was stuck at the $700 range for quite some time, I took a trip on it last year. Has anyone seen it go lower previously like it jumped down those few days last month?
Also, it needs to be booked in F/J for the top extra miles. We were able to get that last year.

Lowest I saw was in the low/mid 800s. I booked it for March 18-20 and again on April 1-3 at $847. More than I was hoping for given the prices I've seen elsewhere in the thread, but oh well.

I was able to get this for $440 - the JFK MIA legs book in A - the rest is I.
I am calculating 18808 EQM and 33510 RDM including 10k Promo Bonus (long /medium haul) and 50% COS and 100% EXP bonus. I do not understand the reference to 40k+ miles?
I just saw this fare in the $750 range yesterday for mid April - it is not gone.
Also, the Priority Pass website shows the Copa Club above gate 21 and the Royal Tocumen lounge (which is landside) as members.
Finally, as I understand I should have no problem accessing the FL lounges in LAX and JFK as EXP as this is an international flight - I thought I saw someone question this?
Any differing information is appreciated. And thanks to the OP - this is far better than making up miles TPAC at the end of the year and sweating SWUs clearing.

Should have clarified that I only started looking a couple of weeks ago.
Saw a few in the high 700s, but best I found with my restrictions was $850. Crunch time at work, so I needed a red-eye outbound (so I could position from OKC via DFW to LAX after work Friday) and Sunday night return (so I could catch the red-eye back to DFW). I'm sure more flexibility on timing would have yielded lower fares.
