I think we all know that the answer to your question is years, if someone decides to make a test case of it. But perhaps our resident legal analysts can explain whether DOJ, state AGs, etc. can intervene in the meantime.

The wallet searches and paperwork searches are one reason why all of my documents now go into various sealed envelopes in my carry-on items, and I no longer carry my identification in my wallet.

Personally, I agree with you. Was offering an alternative that would allow you to honestly state that you did not have an ID in your immediate control.

Where's a good place to hide an ID so it can't be found in a search? As a woman, I know where I would put mine.

I hope Gilmore and others decide to go after this as of the day this nonsense starts being national policy.

While at it, perhaps some government officials can be investigated and prosecuted for perjury.

Yes this certainly smacks of petulance, if not outright spite. Chertoff possesses both those qualities in abundance. I don't think Hawley gives a damn one way or the other, probably beyond his contemplative ability.

I'm not sure where this ID 'sacred cow' came from, but I think it was Congress immediately after 9/11 as one of their "do something, anything" reactions. It is tantamount to admitting that airport screening is not 100% (or close) to keeping weapons and explosives off planes, hence this layer(sic). I don't care who's on my plane so long as they are not armed, carrying explosives, drunk (or have BO); why does the government I wonder ?
I'd really like to know.

Well, as I speculated elsewhere, I believe in the next 3-5 years we'll move to some sort of registered traveler program in which screening will be greatly expedited, if not eliminated altogether, for participants.

The key to making this work is to be able to identify passengers with a high degree of accuracy. I believe what we're seeing now is TSA's attempts to "get the bugs out of the system" before any drastic, and potentially risky, changes are implemented.

Papers, please. All proles must be able to document valid government travel permission. Be prepared for internal borders and travel checkpoints on all Transportation methods in the near future.

From the TSA announcement:
Cooperative passengers without ID may <ha! read that as will> be subjected to additional screening protocols, including enhanced physical screening, enhanced carry-on and/or checked baggage screening, interviews with behavior detection or law enforcement officers and other measures.

Better, ship a firearm/ammunition and seal the ID in the gun case since they always have to be locked during transport (and I never use a TSA lock). I don't think any airport LEO would take kindly to a TSO insisting on having access to an unlocked/opened firearm case in the sterile area.

You could also FedEx the wallet to your destination...provided you don't mind driving to the airport without your DL on you.

Personally, since I wear an ID around my neck all day (yes, 3tal, on a lanyard ) and usually forget it's there when I get to the airport, I've never encountered the extra ID scrutiny when I show the govvie ID.

Does yours have DOB/gender? I have a NASA ID that is just missing these two items or I'd happily use it for air travel. Do they not care in your case?

No DOB, no gender on front or back. Never been questioned on it. Someone who hangs out here has a DHS ID and said it probably won't be good for travel if you go by the explicit letter of the rules.

Yeah, how ludicrous is that...TSA, an agency within DHS won't accept a DHS (its parent) agency ID?!?!?!

Next time I fly (unfortunately not till late August) I think I'll try using my ID if there isn't a long line and seeing what they say. I think I'll end up getting a passport card anyway so that I don't need to bother with my passport since they'll probably reject the gov't ID (even though having it means I've verified citizenship and everything *sigh*).

I went through LAX Terminal 6-8 today. I used my official (brown) passport for a domestic destination. No hassles from the dweeb TSA document checker. I even had a paper clip restraining the visa pages, so the only page he could access was the picture. He shined the loupe for a fraction of a second. I grieve for our country.

Inside a #10 security envelope with an affixed First Class stamp?
