I think there's enough s**t to spread the blame a bit further:
1) the "airport spokesman" who seems to have crafted the list
2) the journalist(sic) who took it as gospel
3) every other outlet who picked up it off the wire and ran without checking
4) well, we won't go into who qualifies for number 4 :o

Naccara (BOS FSD) said he did not believe any items she was carrying were the cause of the outburst. An airport spokesman previously said the woman was carrying lotion, a screw driver and matches, but backed off the statement, and Naccara said it wasn't true.
How do you know when a "spokesperson" is lying ? Yeah.

I am NOT kidding. That's why they do it.

After they "shoot it out of the sky" do you think that it just disappears and the problem is over? No, it crashes into the homes and businesses of innocent people.

CNN: "No Link To Terrorism" in UA flight diverted to Boston.

Not fair, some actually tell the truth. "My name is ____ and I want your vote." :D

Boy i can't wait for the all witty one liners here when a flight is diverted to the bottom of the atlantic by this non-existant threat.

Latest from CNN
http://www.cnn.com/2006/TRAVEL/08/16....ap/index.html

NO SCREWDRIVER

Simple case of clausterphobia.

The natural repsonse? Send up fighter jets (presumably in case they need to shoot down the plane?!?!), divert to BOS, dump all suitcases on the tarmac (check CNN for pix), search bags, waste all pax time.

Again, why? Because a woman got clausterphobia.

bocastephen Aug 16, 2006 10:18 am

Don't UA crews have a long standing history or diverting flights for the dumbest reasons (the aforementioned Japanese businessman on PS, among other examples) as well as deplaning passengers whose appearance 'makes the crew' nervous?

Maybe I need to rethink my support for that CO/UA merger :(

Their crews need to stop being nervous nellies and start using logic and training to figure out the difference between a real threat, a passenger who is out of bounds, and a passenger with a condition that requires other means of intervention - such as someone having a nervous or claustrophic reaction.

Lucky for the woman and those sitting nearby the FAMs didn't turn around in their business class seats and start shooting into coach to stop the commotion.

Slow down there. Allow me to clarify the words you insist on placing in my post.

The overreaction was caused by idiots. The decision to divert the flight happens all the time. Nothing stupid about that at all. The overreaction by the idiots in charge? Fighter jets; detention of all pax; tarmac sniffing of all bags; this tidbit:

A female passenger aboard United Flight 923 had Vaseline, a screw driver, matches and a note referencing al-Qaida, according to Phil Orlandella, spokesman for Boston's Logan International Airport.
Flights divert regularly for pax emergencies. That's all this was.

Which one ? The vaseline, the screwdriver, the matches or the note to Al Q'aida ?
Or did you mean the ANG F-16 drivers ?

No, because the buffoons who run DHS decided to make a show of force to make sure the general public and the buffoons in Congress to who fund them, can see how effective they are - and they are on top of things.

Can't double their budget next year without some major good deeds under their belts.

Anyone care to guess the size and scope of the terrorist ring that will be broken up the third week of October?

Gee, bet you're also waiting for witty one-liners when Earth is struck by a large asteroid, wiping out all life.

Got Asteroid Insurance?
