There is a monthly service fee if you don't have dir dep or 5 debit card trans a month, of $6. HOWEVER, Chase WILL NOT charge you THAT service fee to make you go below $0. So, if you have a $7, they will charge the $6, leaving you with $1. If you have $6, they will charge you the $6 and leave you with $0. If you have $1.34, then they will charge you the monthly service fee, but it will be fore $1.34, leaving you with $0. They will NOT put you negative in your account soley because of the monthly service fee. So, if it sat at $0, then nothing could get charged as far as monthly service fee goes, and it would close out in about 3 months for sitting at $0 with no trans. Hope that helps.

Success! Got the card and already put 4 transactions on it. I did mine for the 4 items I was buying at the self service lane at the grocery store (doesn't take my preferred spend of AmX anyway).
Between a the grocery store and a gas top off here or there, the 5 transactions per month shouldn't be a problem for me or the wife.

Anyone know if this would be the case with the annual fee...I know some have mentioned other ways to get it credited back, but this seems easier.

Hmmmm, well since this may not be extended, and I could care less if I burnt my bridges with Chase anyway. I went and tried to open ANOTHER personal account online. This is my SECOND personal account this year. My third since December '09. I opened one in Janurary on top of one in December '09 where the miles also posted in '10 AND business accounts in December 09' and April '10. All my previous accounts are closed after 6 months except my last Business account.
Well, chase.com just now let me open ANOTHER personal account, took my deposit, accepted the coupon code and correctly acknowledged "Your coupon reward(s):10,000 Continental Miles, 15,000 Continental Miles".
Yea, yea, I know the terms and that theoretically it could be shot down after the fact but it sure looks like it is good for another 25,000 for me anyway. The account is open, they took my deposit.
100,000 Chase Debit Continental miles are already in the bank since the start of this year. This will make it 125,000. Not to mention 150,000 AA miles for my Citi Amex AND Visa cards and another 20,000 AA miles coming for my Citi checking. Gotta love it.
I'm feeling good right now.
Well, maybe I should wait to get my packet in the mail before I get to happy.

I assume this is due to the merger. But, could it be that Chase will create a United checking account sign-up bonus? It's a long long long shot, but not outside the realm of possibilities (given that they've apparently had some success with the CO sign-up bonus)

To me, I would not risk it for the small monthly fee (figure a max of 4 months at $6 is only $24 so you are probably talking something on the order of $12-$18).
By the way, the reason they can not put you in a negative position is that you have probably declined the "overdraft" protection so they just "decline" the monthly fee charge.

The question is will Chase computers "think" they are having to write off the monthly service fee and put you on a "deadbeat" list? I know that if they have to write off any bad debt on a CC they will put you on that list and you will probably never get a Chase CC again.

The Chase computers will NOT put you on a "deadbeat" list. The account will simply go to $0, and once there, if you don't do any trans for 2 or so consecutive months, it will CLOSE automatically. However, it will close due to inactivity, not due to anything negative / "deadbeat".
This was the way it worked long before the government mandated overdraft decline option for the customer. Also, just as an FYI, the overdraft decline thing you are talking about ONLY applies to DEBIT CARD purchases (run as credit or debit). It does NOT include checks, ACHs, fees, etc.
Finally, to the other poster that asked about the AF on the debit card. That $25 or $65 fee WILL be allowed to go through regardless of balance. So, if you have $1.50 in your account, and the $25 AF is to be charged, your balance will be NEGATIVE $23.50. Also bear in mind that if you then stay NEGATIVE for EVERY 5 consecutive business days, you will get charged a $15 extended overdrawn fee.
Hope that helps.

I do not understand why it is so hard to some people just make the 5 debit card transaction every month to avoid the fee and keep the account in good faith for 6 months?
Even if the first $100 sits in the account for 6 months, it is only $100 that hopefully would not make any meaningful difference in your going about the daily life. As for the potential interest earned, well, if you can find a 2.5% PA account for it, $100 for 6 months at that rate (very rare and takes a lot more than 5 debit card transaction to keep such account in case someone asks), it would only come to $1.25 before tax.
Unless you do it on a purpose to despise the big banks, otherwise I fail to see why would someone really plans on such as scheme, i.e. leaving your account at 0 balance after the 3rd or 4th month and then let Chase auto-closes it.

As today seems to be the last day, I opened one for my wife.
With the CO/UA merger, if anyone out there is thinking about this, do it today, as it may be gone forever soon.
Of course, it may be extended tomorrow.

Now, can anyone tell me if I can open a business account with address in another state. My home state (which is the address on my personal accounts) does not qualify for the busienss account. We have no chase branches. If you have a way, please share or PM. Running out of time to do this. Thanks, in advance.
