My Spirit MasterCard with BofA has ShopSafe, which generates virtual card numbers with a limit and expiration date you can set. Comes in very handy for things like this.

How long would the miles take to post to AA?

I don't specifically remember, but it did post in a reasonable amount of time and I did not have to follow up. Remember though, posting time generally has as much to do with the portal than it does with the merchant (and my prior purchases were through UR).

I'm in for $44 worth to top up to an award level. Thanks to OP. Came at the right time because I don't have travel opportunities coming up for rental car miles (AA not being my primary airline). Better to have the option to book the big trip sooner rather than later, and this beats purchasing miles.

I sent a message about how the automatic "renewal terms" will affect payout but haven't heard back. My guess based on other posters is that it has to do with not awarding miles for the cost of automatic renewal 1+ year from now.
Any experience on this?

Looks to me that the Economist mag IS automatically renewed (scroll down into the details section) http://www.magazines.com/the-economi...efault,pd.html

Another option could be to buy a magazines.com gift card, and use it to purchase the magazine subscriptions so that they do not auto-renew. I *think* I did this last year with the United portal - I got a $100 GC and subscribed to New Yorker and Wired which was almost $100 for both of them. I wanted to read both of them, so this worked for me.
Don't forget that for most magazines the print subscription includes access to the web/iPad version. I am usually outside of the US, but have a US address with family, so this worked out very well. We *both* get to read the magazine - my family gets to read it in person and I get to read it on my iPad wherever I happen to be in the world.
T&C do not preclude purchasing GCs so it is worth a try.
