i don't mean to sound morbid but it'll be worth waiting to see the full extent of how this disaster pans out.

Did anyone get AY to change the departure airport, e.g. flying out of LHR instead of STR...

Anyone bought tix through Flugladen.de ? Just send them an e-mail and got the simple reply that the ticket is non-refundable and non-cancable. The flights or not until May, but I just thought to try and see what they would say.

What other answer you had expected? Coz for later flights there is no issue and when the situation still moves on an airline decision like the currently possibilities will be announced.

I didn't really expected another answer. Like I said, I just thought to give it try and see what they say. Thats all.

Yeah, I'm flying early May as well and would love to change my CAN destination to anywhere in Japan! Too early to do anything unfortunately,

Neither's going to happen, at least not without heavy repricing.

I can only talk about my experience yesterday regarding another one world partner which due to re-scheduling meant that the second leg of the trip would happen before the first. In that instance, I was allowed to use a different oneworld airline and take a completely different routing. Realise the scenarios are completely different. They would not allow an alternative starting point. in the past, QR has allowed a different departure within 500 miles. Ironically that was a cheap AMS-TYO fare that became LHR-TYO - but again that was to do with re-scheduling.

I'm open minded to what the airline offers as I see it as a bonus, but if you don't ask, you won't get. Just don't be overly optimistic and certainly book free cancellable options. Good luck friends!

Agree Rollanotherfatone. Although your scenario is different it shows that airlines are flexible when the alternative is refunding money. I'd imagine it would be a good idea to call them up and be ready to offer alternative destinations on aircraft that aren't full nearer the time.

My arrangements are rapidly falling apart with LA cancelling my booked MAD-FRA segment (unclear if this is a one off or the route is being canned generally?)

a shame as I was hoping to try out LA one last time before they leave OW

LHR? Why not JFK or LAX?

Just had my miles posted to AS from my rerouted AY PVG-HEL-STR 2 weeks ago, yes, it is true, it credited as J and I got nearly 24k miles after all the bonuses.
I have just wrote up a review here on my blog.
If you do not want to read it here is the gist of it:
The food offered on their long haul flights are insane, as I had never been fed more times than on another J flight. The food quality is pretty good as well.
The service was mediocre, as the crew forgot my requests a few times.
The seat is generic reverse herringbone, so nothing too special nowadays, but still rather comfortable for people below 6ft. The new lounge at HEL is very good, with great selections of food and alcohol, as well as modern finishes.
I did not get any sleep because a middle class mama-travel group took over the cabin and the kids were running rampant the entire time, truly a horrible experience, but not AY's fault.
So I am looking forward to talking to AY for my rest of the flights in the coming months, and with the fare class change as well as rerouting to potentially outside mainland China, I think this has the chance to become one of the most rewarding flights I have ever taken.

quick question: do you know if AY purposefully or by mistake booked you into J when making the change to PVG? I don't suppose you outright asked them to rebook you into J, when your original flight (I presume to CAN?) was cancelled?

Normally happens when previous booking class isn't available when changes are made. Hence it's possible to even earn on redemptions. So probably an error/compromise.

Email from Expedia looks like AY want to cancel ticket now rather than leave it, unless Google did a bad translation
