scottykempf, I found it on the hijo web page and on expedia about three hours ago but now it seems to be gone.

I think that warning about how your card hasn't been charged is simple boilerplate anytime you make a non-prepaid hotel reservation online. I don't think it would put the hotel on any more sound legal footing to try to jack up the rate once you arrive.

If they don't notify you until check out, it seems to me you would have an open and shut case to charge it on your credit card and then dispute it. Just save your emails showing the reservation at the lower rate.

Now, if you get there and they won't let you check in without agreeing to a higher rate....well, I hope the beach is a comfortable place to sleep for a week Actually, I suspect this would be the more likely scenario. Most hotels nowadays require you to sign-off or initial the rate when you check in, presumably to avoid disputes later.

For those searching for airfares from the eastern US, it appears Aeropostal goes from MIA-PMV for about $600 R/T. If you can get to South Florida inexpensively, this might be the most affordable option.

Does anyone know if it's possible to earn FFM in any program for Aeropostal flights since the demise of GlobalPass?

I am en route to Venezuela right now and I'm scheduled to check in at the hotel tomorrow. I will report back to the board whatever my experience turns out to be. I'm flying into CCS and am planning on buying a ticket locally to PMV.

As Expected

Why the face? This is exactly what I expected. Expedia will no longer confirm any potentially mistaken fares. Instead, they will escalate them to a supervisor and then cancel all of them.

- Avior Airlines : Domestic only
- Aeropostal : From MIA
- Thomas Cook : From FRA
- Martinair : From Holland

I love how I paid like 700 venezuelan bucks for 8 nights, and googling the place comes up with an add for Jean Paul Gauliter eau de toilette for $180,000.

Noooo way am I going to this place though- am used to too many images of Hawaii & Tahiti, google image of this place makes it look like, comparatively, my memories of Hamilton, Ontario in the 80's, when lived near it.

For future reference, it is generally preferable not to email the hotels, airlines, agencies, etc., until the deal has ended and things have begun to settle.

That wasn't a smart thing to do. By attempting to re-confirm a confirmation, you brought attention to both your reservation and the ongoing deal. The lesson we all should've learned from the Tokyo/Osaka fiasco is that you should never bring attention to the deal while it's still alive. The more people Expedia has to deal with, the more likely they will cave somewhere (in this case, they started out by saying only those with reservations in November will be honored, but expanded it later to those who had obtained confirmations after the rates had been pulled). It's actually in your favor to allow as many FT'ers to jump in as possible. Expedia doesn't give a rat's @$$ about quality customer service -- you need to maximize the complaints they receive in order to amplify your own. Please don't do this next time. Keep the FT spirit alive.

By the way, for the record, I have no intention of jumping in on this one. The place is too scary for me

Why is that? I don't see anything scary about the place. I see a rough equivalent to Baja California or, say, a mirror image to the Canaries. To me the only scary part is the overnight stay in gringo-unfriendly Caracas ...

EDIT: Or maybe you meant the HoJo's is the scary place

If the deal is actually honored, I would more than likely go, just to say I got to spend a week in a hotel on a tropical island (albeit not a real fancy one) for under $1. Even if it cost me $700 airfare to get there, which it would. I'd rather enjoy getting out of the cold here for a week in January!

Are these reservations or prepaid bookings? Hopefully we can get some coupons out of the deal, because I really don't want to go there. Even if somebody gave me a week for free, I would really think twice before I took it.

Venezuela is also country with a lot of tension at the moment. Westerners (especially "gringos") are not entirely welcome. CCS and surroundings are very dangerous, murder, robbery, and express kidnappings are common. Flights from the USA land at night so there is no chance for a connection until the morning. CCS itself is an hour away by car, and the hotels near the airport (Maiquetia, outside Caracas) are expensive. I wouldn't park myself at the airport overnight either, it just isn't very pleasant. If you do, have eyes on the back of your head, and remember to bring your own toliet paper!

There is a hefty exit tax to leave the country ($60), they have been known to try to collect it (unoffically) again, even though it is already in your ticket.

Good luck to all!

esofina's post says it all. Watch out, folks...Margarita is not Oahu. For those of you thinking that any Venezuelan hotel will honor a VEB 70/night rate, keep drinking that Kool-Aid.
