Broken Pipe personal items damaged

Staying at a Renaissance as a Marriott Platinum member and overnight yesterday there appeared to be a broken pipe and water leaked from the ceiling over my entire wallet and an Ipad whilst I was asleep. The wallet was sodden in the morning and the contents with it(still wet now) also an ipad got a total drenching but appears to be OK.

Other than apologies and offer me 5000 Marriott reward points Im quite disappointed with the response from the hotel.

Anyone else have any experience of anything like this happening and how I should expect it to be handled by the hotel?

Ok, that's worse than having to take a cold shower! I'd file an official report w/ Marriott/property because, while the iPad appears to be ok, it might not be & may need to be replaced. You should not be on the hook for the replacement if that's the case, since it was caused by a hotel broken water pipe. Re: other or more compensation I'd let the others chime in.

Cheers.

Thanks that helps, I'll call Marriott. I was expecting the hotel to have called by now as I left them my number and email. They have not so I am becoming slightly angry 😡, perhaps I was too kind on them this morning but had to leave for a busy day of meetings.

I would not call Marriott. You don't know that there is damage so you are simply protecting yourself against the possibility.

Send the GM or some other person at the property an email documenting what happened and that your property may have been damaged.

Leave it at that. Keep that email with the photos you presumably have.

I realized that when I said Marriott/property it was misconstrued (and I missed that it was at a Ren). I meant file a formal thing (even if via email) w/ the property so that if the iPad does turn out to be damaged, there's a record. While Marriott (aka, the property) should pay for repair/replacement due to it being the hotel's broken pipe that caused the damage (aka, if it doesn't work), if they fight it then you've got some documentation for your own insurance company if you decided to file a claim.

Cheers.

At a hotel I frequent quite often I was once startled awake to water pouring into my bathroom from the room above and was compensated 10k points for the inconvenience of changing rooms in the middle of the night. Didn't ask for the points, but was more than happy with the goodwill gesture.

That being said, I guess I wouldn't expect more than 10k in points compensation for the trouble. On the other hand I'd be more concerned about water damage to the iPad and being compensated should it eventually fail. Water/liquid damage is a tricky thing when it comes to electronics. You could see problems day one or things start flaking out over a course of weeks/months. I know if I were you, regardless of it working now, I'd want the iPad replaced for fear of water shortening the lifespan of the device.

It's best to assume that the tablet is damaged, since they are most certainly not waterproof. Insist that the hotel reimburse you for a new table and wallet. The main point of that isn't just to make you whole but to fix the problem and be more vigilant in the future. I see more electrical, plumbing and other mechanical issues in hotels today - even new builds - than I saw 20 years ago when I was living in hotel 4 nights a week.

Even if you have a warranty on the tablet, water infiltration would void the coverage.

There is a sensor inside the iPad that detects if the iPad was exposed to water and voids the warranty (even AppleCare). While the iPad may appear fine now, a few weeks or months down the road when you start experiencing problems, Apple will tell you the problems are not covered because of the exposure to water!

Did you take pictures of the water damage to your wallet and iPad. I would insist upon reimbursement for both the iPad and wallet as well as points for your trouble as this outside of your control. Start with the hotel GM and escalate through social media until you are satisfied. Let us know how it gets resolved.

Regards,

RIP...
