There is a sensor inside the iPad that detects if the iPad was exposed to water and voids the warranty (even AppleCare). While the iPad may appear fine now, a few weeks or months down the road when you start experiencing problems, Apple will tell you the problems are not covered because of the exposure to water!
Did you take pictures of the water damage to your wallet and iPad. I would insist upon reimbursement for both the iPad and wallet as well as points for your trouble as this outside of your control. Start with the hotel GM and escalate through social media until you are satisfied. Let us know how it gets resolved.
