Here's the link to the Prague Do thread. I'm pressed for time, so I don't have time to do specific post links within the thread, but if you scroll through you'll get info re: the 2 properties as well as other good info to know re: Prague.

I've never stayed at the Flors but we spent a week at the Prague Marriott at New Year. No upgrade (didn't ask) but our room was fine. The location is convenient to virtually everything you'll want to see and just walking around and looking at the architecture is a pleasure - even in the winter! The staff in the lounge were very helpful and friendly and, if you like, you can easily make a meal of the copious evening offerings.

Many nearby restaurants are quite touristy but one of the bellmen - can't recall his name but he's a young man from Slovakia - was really great and suggested several good and not too expensive places nearby. You must go to the fabulous art nouveau Café Imperial, a couple of blocks away. The Czech menu is very good and the decor is a must see!

If you plan to shop, the enormous Palladium shopping centre a block from the hotel has some nice stores (several UK and French chains but not much local) and is a good place to get a SIM card for your phone if you're looking for one. Our best discovery was the food court on the top floor - yes, there are a few fast food places but also several very nice sitdown restaurants serving Czech and international cuisine. The food court's open till 11 pm.

Whichever you choose, Prague is a beautiful place to visit.

I just booked the Marriott Prague on PL for $91 AI. The two nights before I will be staying at the CY Flora @ $43 a night (with Expedia Coupon). I will let you know what I think of the two after my stay in early May.

My experience with the Marriott Prague was very positive. I was staying at the Hilton, but was in the area and stopped by to ask if the concierge could help me secure some tickets. I told the concierge I was staying at the Hilton, but asked nicely if she could help me purchase some concert tickets. The concierge was helpful and called the box office for me and made sure they had seats available for the same day concert. She was not able to reserve the tickets for me, but informed me that if I stopped by the ticket office myself, I should be able to purchase the concert tickets I was looking for. I don't know if it is typical for a hotel concierge to show this kind of favor to guests staying at another hotel, but I thought it was a nice gesture. Perhaps she was hoping I would stay there for a future visit, which I would definitely consider.

UPDATE: This morning I was able to update my two reservations and still haven't definitively decided where to stay. I now have reservations at the Prague Marriott for 2,000 CZK/night and Prague Courtyard Flora for 1,000 CZK/night. With the current exchange, its about US$330 difference. I don't have to decide anytime soon, but unless I see something convincing in this or the Prague Do thread, sounds like the Flora will be our home for 5 days.

This will be our budget stop during our European Vacation. We have 5 nights at the Rome Flora, 5 night in Prague and 7 nights at the Paris Rive Gauche. The total hotel cost may end up being around US$1,500 after using points. Not too bad. Rome Flora is currently quoting out at $1,000/night if I were to pay all cash.

Here is my experience with the Courtyard Flora and Marriott Prague:

Courtyard: I booked here for a Friday and Saturday night on Expedia. Each night was under a separate reservation. The advance purchase rate with breakfast was 1500 CZK (minus the $50 BRG coupons), so it came out to about $40 a night. I arrived in Prague (after a long layover at LHR) around 10pm at night. I took the bus to the subway and arrived to the hotel around 11:15-11:30. The subway was extremely close (about a block walk up/down a hill) to the hotel. When I walked in to the hotel, the clerk at the front desk said "you must be Mr. Maineflyer16." I guess the hotel was sold out and I was the only one left to check in with a reservation (it was Prague marathon weekend). Check in was a breeze. I was told I got upgraded to the best room in the hotel short of the honeymoon suite. I think it was the "larger" guest room. She also told me internet was free for gold members (which otherwise was VERY pricey). It was a corner room on the top floor (8). It was really nice and rather large for one person. It had a sofa, flat panel TV, fridge, great views. I was really impressed. Best of all, I did not have to go through the hassle of checking in and out again on the two reservations. I just stopped by the desk and the manager told me everything was fine.

Breakfast in the restaurant was pretty standard buffet. They had breads, eggs, etc. I also think--but I did not take advantage of--they had a chef for cook to order items, such as waffles, eggs, omelets, etc. The restaurant was pretty busy on Sunday morning (the morning of the marathon) with plenty of runners getting their energy for the run.

The location, as noted, is not excellent. It is located across the street from a mall and a grocery store. I liked being close to the grocery store so I could stock up on bottled water. The first day, I decided just to walk downtown to the Old Prague area. It took me about 20-30 minutes, and I somehow managed to run into a "legalize marijuana" parade. On the way back, I took the subway, which as noted above, drops you right off at the hotel.

Overall, I was extremely happy with this hotel and would not hesitate to stay here again.

Prague Marriott: As others have noted, the location of this hotel is much, much better. It is definitely closer to the Old Prague area. It is also very close to the subway and not far from the bus station. The hotel is wonderful inside. The lobby is very attractive. I booked my stay here on Priceline and go in for $75-$80ish (I can't remember). I had requested early check-in about a week in advance as I knew I would have to leave the CY around 12:00. The hotel wrote back that they would do their best, but they were sold out the night before (because of the marathon) and if they could not get me a room, they would be happy to let me use the lounge. I got to the Marriott around 12:30 and was pleasantly surprised when they had a room available. Not only that, I was upgraded to a junior suite (with two bathrooms, 2 tvs, 2 rooms!)

The lounge here was decent if not a bit awkwardly shaped. It was either two or three floors. The evening snacks were mediocre--only two to choose from (which by European standards is kind of lacking). I think they had chicken nugget type things and little spanish quiche squares. They also had beer and free liquor as well. Most of the time I can make a meal out of the evening snacks in Europe, but this hotel was lacking a bit. Breakfast was standard. I think it had eggs, bacon, sausage, breads, fruit, etc. Nothing extraordinary, but got the job done.

Overall, my suggestion to a budget traveler (which I certainly am) is the Courtyard Flora. The room upgrades at both hotels were fantastic (and left me plenty of room as a single traveler). The Marriott was nice, but not worth the extra money (especially if you aren't using Priceline, or have tons of points to burn). Just stick to the advance purchase rates at the Flora and it will save you a bundle. If you hate public transit, the Marriott is definitely in a better location for walking everywhere. If you stay at the Flora, just be aware that you will have to start and end your day with a subway ride. Their subway is clean, fast, cheap and frequent so it did not bother me. Feel free to PM me if you have any other questions!

I stayed at the Flora CY and really enjoyed it. All you have to do is cross the street to take the subway and there is even a tram taking you to the old part of town if you want to see a bit more of Prague. The staff was very friendly and accommodating and the restaurant was very good. Good price, too.

Bing Maps

Just a word of caution when using the marriott.com "Maps and Transportation" feature. I was surprised by the references above to how close the Flora CY is to the subway as I stayed in Prague last year and didn't select this hotel given its distance from the old city and the apparent distance to the subway shown on Marriott's web site. Bing Maps places this hotel about 5 blocks from the subway when, as reported above, it is a lot closer (as can be seen from Google Maps). May not seem like much of a distance, but in the middle of winter, every block counts.

Leaving tomorrow for 17-day European holiday w/ the first 2 nights being in PRG for PRG DO.

Put in comments section to Virtual Concierge that I'd be arriving mid-morning & if room wasn't ready, would appreciate getting access to exec lounge to wait vs sitting in the lobby (reply was yes).

Also requested Platinum upgrade to a suite if available, saying I knew it was based on availability & not guaranteed, but that I would appreciate it if I was indeed upgraded. I thought, since the hotel has 35 suites & 5 type of suites, that I might luck out. No such luck.

Response I received was: "With regards to the upgrade to the Executive Suite I would like to inform you that we have suites open for sale, therefore I will not be able to free upgrade you however I have allocated a nice executive room for your stay."

In checking my ressie, it just seems to be a regular room but on the exec level. Others had reported receiving upgrade to suite at this property in this thread so just a wee bit disappointed, but given I'll be out & about w/ FTers during the weekend, not that big a deal.

However, the Ren Imperial Riding School hotel, in checking my ressie just now, did upgrade me to a jr suite, when I made similar request. Too bad I'll only be there 12 hours!

I don't usually do the suite request thing in my comments to v.c., but this is my first proper holiday in 5 years so I'm hoping that the various hotels will come through.

I'll report back on my stay after the weekend is over.

Cheers.

FWIW, I got upgraded to a jr. suite at check-in; I also had been "upgraded" to the executive floor ahead of time, but they were able to offer me a better room at check-in. However, June is a much busier time in Europe than May, so your luck may vary. Enjoy your trip! (5 years--wow, you've def. earned it!).

I've never been upgraded at this hotel, but not to worry. The experience you will have in any room at that hotel will be excellent. Enjoy your trip.

Quick trip report: 6/10-12/2011

I arrived around 10:00am on a Friday.

Originally I was going to take the Airport Bus (50 CZK-$3), which stops out front or around the corner of the Marriott, but got a bit confused since I also saw one for 120CZK ($7) & I was tired. Took cab for 650CZK ($38); driver wasn't thrilled that I wanted to use c.c., but they had confirmed they'd take them. Note, the 120CZK shuttle literally stops in front of the Marriott & Old Town; another FTer took that & said it was easy.

Also, directly across from the Marriott is the Hilton Old Town, so if someone belongs to both programs & needs to hotel hop for status, it's about a 50 foot walk.

As others have mentioned, the lobby and ground floor is quite lovely. I was told at check-out it's going to undergo a renovation starting later this year & continuing through August of next, so keep that in mind. The check-out agent seemed to be quite excited about the renovation, but I thought the lobby area was nice as is. On the ground floor there is a gift shop, a coffee shop, the restaurant, and bar. On the lower level there's a small casino (not run by Marriott; evidently a lot of hotels in PRG have small casinos).

At check-in my room was ready, but they were pro-actively 'selling' suite upgrades for about $100/night (current exchange rate). I said if they'd like to upgrade me to one gratis as Plat that would be fine; otherwise, no thanks. I was only going to be in room in evening due to PRG Do, so it wasn't critical to me to have it. I also picked points for Plat amenity for the same reason.

The FDC & I got into it when she wanted to xerox both sides of my AAA card. I said no. She said it was policy to prevent fraud & to verify that I had the card. I pointed out that she had the card in her hand, it showed my name, and was valid until next year. She was also holding my passport which showed my name & picture, which matched the name on the AAA card. We went back/forth & I requested a manager. Manager on duty said similar to FDC, and that it was policy. I replied that it must be hotel policy since it wasn't Marriott policy. She said she thought it was Marriott policy; I said no it's not, my cell phone works int'ly & we can call Marriott back in the states. After that she said they wouldn't xerox it, but they needed to write it down on the form you sign at check-in for their accounting audit, and they'd do it as an 'exception'. Still wasn't thrilled, but figured it was better than the entire card being copied and at that point I wanted to get to room/take a nap.

Since I was going to be out & about all weekend & not needing anything at the hotel I was at the start of a 17-day trip @ 6 dif properties where I'd have multiple holds/charges, I didn't want to do a hold on my c.c. & asked they just charge me upfront. She did it as a deposit & said at check-out it would show zero after they did the room charge.

Room was a good size. Came with toiletries, bathrobe, slipper, etc.

There are 2 exec levels in the hotel - 6th & 7th. The exec lounge is 2 levels as well, so key entry from either level. Upstairs are tables, food/drink, and downstairs are couches/chairs, coffee tables, and the 2 i-net tables. The 2 levels are connected inside the lounge by a marble staircase. I actually thought the downstairs was nice/more conducive to relaxing, but for easiest access to food/drink, upstairs w/ the tables.

I only dashed into the lounge for a few minutes for brekkie, but nice spread. Also took a quick look at eve & saw a couple of hot dishes, but didn't have time to check things out as I was late for FT event.

There were some other FTers at the hotel & we a couple of times were running late to events, so were going to catch a cab. We asked the bellman to let us know what approximate rate would be, so that we could avoid being ripped off. Turns out the hotel (like many in Prague) have hotel transport cars right outside the entrance. They're usually Mercedes & have a set rate. For where we wanted to go it was 350CZ ($20) & we were dividing it by all 4 of us, so we did that a few times. We also got the driver's card & called when we needed pick-up.

Re: i-net. They said to accept charges & it gets taken off at the end. The first day I did that; the 2nd day I was asked for log-in info. Called down & they gave it to me. When I checked out & asked for receipt (no e-folio under room door), the FDC said only charges were i-net. I mentioned Plat status, he confirmed it & said the check-in clerk had done it incorrectly. Weirdly enough receipt showed deposit/charge, but not a zero, although obviously it was. It came out correctly on my cc though. Check-out clerk was really nice.

Re: electrical outlets. I forgot my plug adapter & at first didn't see a US one. I asked & they said I could get one from the business center for 300CZK deposit (refunded upon return). When I went to front desk re: it, the FDC mentioned there is one. It's a bit easy to overlook since it's white/blends in somewhat. But it does have one for those that don't travel w/ the plug adapters.

Also as noted by others, there is a subway stop around the corner of the Marriott, and the property is convenient to Old Town.

I checked my Marriott account. The stay posted properly, other than the 500 points not posting. I'll get those added upon my return.

I also took a # of pictures of the property, but won't have time to post those until my return to the US.

Pics here:

Cheers.

thanks for your report Sharon, I stayed at the Marriott once and as most others ran into Hotel Policy being quoted as Marriott Policy but thats kind of normal when in Europe Had a whole to do as well over an Upgrade , they claimed that free nights werent entitled to any MR benfits etc etc but did in the end relent

A very nice property (btw the Hilton across the street used to be a Renaissance, walked in didnt care for it).

No need to worry about a room with a view at this Hotel, simply there arent any since its not tall enough

Even with all the hassles I would go back, its location cant be beat a 15 min walk and Im at every place I wanted to see (Ok the Castle is a bit longer)

I agree. I would certainly stay here again. I just wouldn't expect above & beyond wrt to upgrades, customer service, etc, but more run of the mill.

Cheers.
