Sounds like you were played for a fool on the upcharge - and especially on accepting what the “standard upgrade” is
There are many reports of this property refusing to give comp upgrades to suites. There's no call to disparage people for posting their experiences.

We stayed at the Wailea during late April for my 50th birthday. This was our third visit to the Wailea Marriott. We booked a points redemption, 4 nights for 200K points and get 5th night free. Booked the lowest level garden-view room. Received a Titanium upgrade to a Premium Ocean view.

Check-in: We arrived during the rush at 3pm, but the line moved quickly. Titanium status recognized at checkin. Lei greeting with cold POG. I was given a Titanium appreciation gift and letter; a small bag with some locally made Lavender hand sanitizer spray and some Lip balm.
Room: Received upgrade from lowest level room to Premium Ocean View. Hale 7, room 7225. Bell service picked us and our luggage up in a golf cart and drove us within a few steps of the room. Great room, overlooks Wailea beach, the Luau, and grounds. Room is well done, and was in great shape. We enjoyed wine and drinks several nights on our Lanai, watching the Luau and relaxing. It was not a bother in any way, ending by 8pm each evening.
Breakfast: As mentioned above, we received coupons for two for every day of our stay. We alternated between Starbucks and Whale Tale and it was plenty each day.
Dining and Bar Service: We only dined at the pool-side bar, KAPA, once and food was good, service was great. Many pool-side drinks and some food at both the Adult Pool and 'Ohi Family Pool. Great service, quick, and drinks were good.
Pools: We had no problem finding pool chairs at the adult pool in the mornings. Disclaimer, we were up early each day. Often, we skipped the Adult Pool and went to the North, 'Ohi Family pool for hot tubs and less crowds.
Resort Fees: Lei greeting as mentioned. We received at least four bottles of water a day, maybe more. So much we had extras when we left. We utilized the shuttle service on days we were tired and got a lift up to the Wailea shops for dining and shopping. We used the beach chairs on three days; no issues at all, they put up extra chairs for people who asked. They took them down early in the afternoons, but wind would be very high and few people were on the beach.
Service: We received a very nice gift basket on my birthday and personalized card. Aloha spirit was apparent on EVERY staff member we came in contact with. No complaints.
Covid concerns: We had to show our Safe Travels approvals on our phones prior to check in. Mask usage was posted and adherence was pretty good. Not used on the beach or around the pools, and we were fine with that. Walking to and from beach, pool, around the resort... masks on.

General Comments: The resort may not be at max capacity, but still felt full. Any more full than what it was and it might not be as enjoyable. Wailea overall felt like it was getting back to normal, but dining capacity really needs to be increased.

We enjoy staying in Wailea when in Maui. If the price is right, the Wailea Marriott is a great option for us.

I just returned and while we sometimes split our time with the Westin, this time just the Beach Resort.

The question, IMHO, isn’t hotel but which side of the Island you prefer. We like the South for a number of reasons, but YMMV.

That said, while there is nothing wrong with the Westin, we have consistently found the Beach Resort more aloha-esque. And, if you enjoy playing upgrade roulette, the Westin seems to have less inventory of extraordinary.

I’ve stayed at this resort 20+ times (which isn’t that impressive when you live on Oahu…) but haven’t encountered this before: the only rooms available for points are garden view with no option to upgrade with additional points or $$. True throughout Oct-Dec. better rooms widely available for cash rate, and points are at off peak several weeks.

plan was points + cash upgrade. Thoughts?

Keep checking. The availability has been highly variable lately. For upcoming dates at end of June, it's gone from nothing, to only garden view, to garden view through premium ocean view, back to nothing, and now back to garden view through premium ocean view. The dilemma for me is whether there's any benefit to booking the higher category room (premium ocean view) if that's the likely Ambassador upgrade.

Bear in mind you can get Ocean view King for what should be $569 after BRG for many Oct to Dec dates.

I'm in the same boat you are - trying to decide between booking five nights on points next year at Westin Maui or Wailea Beach Resort. We already have a week booked elsewhere at Kaanapali so I am leaning toward using our points to get a fresh outlook over at Wailea. I'm only a lifetime Gold with Marriott so not expecting much in the way of upgrades at Wailea Beach. In years past I've gotten nice status upgrades at the Westin Maui - but those were back in the Starwood days when i was a Platinum. We paid visits to both properties while we were on Maui last month.

Is this a website issue or an inventory issue?

It's the property adjusting inventory to maximize revenue.

Agreed it will be awhile before we see any 'leeway" in booking on points at many properties especially ones that are owned by equity capital groups this is one. Sad but the "coinage valve" of points is tanking.

For Marriott it's always been the case that properties with the highest redemption pressure have the worst redemption value. But given the high cash price of resorts in Hawaii lately the points value is not terrible.

The redemption value here is quite high - 70k points for a room that's priced at $849 is a redemption value over 1.3 cpp. Even better if you book five nights.

At least this property doesn't play availability games a la Andaz Maui. Actually pretty easy to book a points stay, even during high demand periods.

I am surprised Andaz gets away with that. My company did work on the rehab of that place was originally slated to go from a Renaissance to a St. Regis and those plans were gorgeous
