SNA did not work here
Just leaving a 3 night stay here, and I can say that my SNAs did not clear. Then again, there were no suites bookable any night we were here, so I can understand that.
I did overhear another platinum at check-in getting upgraded to a suite, but I suppose he was paying cash, not points like I am.
Other than that, this is a fantastic hotel for a relaxing couple of days.

find out number of rooms in each room category
rooms within category may vary, may not all have private onsen etc
may be able to 'pre-block' into desired rooms during lowest seasons

can request rooms in advance
seems may only be 4 suites, 1 per suite category
that would mean 35 rooms in 4 room categories
http://www.suirankyoto.com/en#guest-rooms
Y80K superior room
Y95K deluxe room
Y125K premier room
Y125K japanese premier room
Y160K togetsu executive suite
Y160K akatokitsuyu executive suite
Y270K terrace suite
Y350K presidential suite
are upgraded rooms/suites available via award?
looking at rates, potentially '2' rooms & 2 suites

Is the Suiran worth staying for more than one night? I have the Suiran booked and then the Westin the next night only because I feel like there is not much to do in the surrounding area.
The problem with that is that we end up moving belongings between the two properties...
No magical butler to do that for us, is there?

It's important that you know what you want to do and see.
If the main attractions in Kyoto are important, somewhere more central and accessible is definitely a better choice. In which case I would not stay at the Suiran at all - it's not impossible to do, but it's just a little too inconvenient, for me.
But if you are having an easy relaxing holiday then I strongly recommend the Suiran, especially if you can get it on points. I regretted staying only a night but it was a spur-of-the-moment side trip. The surrounding area has plenty to see IMO and is perfectly suited for quiet morning walks and discovering quaint little cafes to watch the world go by. That sort of holiday.
