It's important that you know what you want to do and see.

If the main attractions in Kyoto are important, somewhere more central and accessible is definitely a better choice. In which case I would not stay at the Suiran at all - it's not impossible to do, but it's just a little too inconvenient, for me.

But if you are having an easy relaxing holiday then I strongly recommend the Suiran, especially if you can get it on points. I regretted staying only a night but it was a spur-of-the-moment side trip. The surrounding area has plenty to see IMO and is perfectly suited for quiet morning walks and discovering quaint little cafes to watch the world go by. That sort of holiday.
