Giant Eagle claimed that WU was making them go to a cash only basis for MOs.

However, that was not what happened. GE just decided for whatever reason to get out of the MO market by declining all payment methods except cash.

If it is true that Safeway has begun denying all payment methods except cash, it is likely a Safeway decision and not a BHN one.

Safeway may just be more sophisticated than other grocers in that their IT can make it a hard block at the register.

A debit transaction, especially a single one, does not yield them much swipe fees.
Multiple small dollar credit swipes, in the meantime, are significantly more profitable for them.
I get that it is much less profitable, but this push makes it seem like it must be unprofitable. They split $5.95 with the grocery store for a $500 card. Then they get about .84% plus $1.97 debit fee, so yeah under 2% net per $500 card.

I expect them to continue to cut off avenues. Going to test at my local Safeway chain today.

Used $200 BHN Visa on 4/24 without issue.

So the MB VGC worked as normal at the service center on 4/24?

The info I shared was from a memo that someone shared with me. I tried it today. It still works.

I don’t want to call false alarm, since it is a legitimate memo, but if it does stop working suddenly, you’ll know why

BAU Sunday
Is there a distinction between BHN and MetaBank or are they one in the same?

BHN is the brand partner and distributor, MetaBank is the backing bank. Most branded cards are that way. For example, with the Target RedCard, Target is the brand partner, and TD Bank is the backing bank.

BHN also uses Sunrise Bank for their gift cards, although those are a bit less common than the MetaBank ones.
