If you have an HH card that earns a category bonus (i.e. 6x at grocery), it would make more sense to buy the VGCs there.

The plot thickens

Well, this is special. My DL Amex Card Spend, which had gone up to $2-3k, has now dropped back to $1-$2k as of 5Feb18.

FWIW -- I noticed a "Help Wanted" sign at CS desk at a MS-friendly Simon mall near me. One really wouldn't need an "inside man" at this particular mall, but in other cases ...

FWIW #2 -- Got an email from Simon today, advertising 10% off purchase fee for Simon Visas (use code FEBVI10), and 25% off for Simon Amexs (use code FEBAX25). Personally, not very exciting to me to save 39 cents off regular purchase price. Fine print, emphasis added:

*Offer applies to business-to-business orders only. Valid through 2/28/18 only on participating Cards purchased at Simon Guest Services, the Mall Office, or at simon.com/volume , while supplies last. No rain checks. Cannot be combined with any other offer. American Express,® Visa, and MetaBank® are not sponsors of this promotion. The Visa Simon Giftcard® can be used everywhere Visa debit cards are accepted in the U.S. and cannot be used at ATMs or redeemed for cash. The Visa Simon Giftcard® is issued by MetaBank, Member FDIC, pursuant to a license from Visa U.S.A. Inc. The American Express® Simon Giftcard® can be used at U.S. merchants that accept American Express® Cards, except cruise lines and casinos.

The most useful feature of having a business account at Simon for me is you can call or email them in advance with the number of VGCs and the amounts you want on them and they will have them ready for you when you get there so all you have to do is pay, sign, and go. The discount is nice, but it's not a huge deal to me.

You do NOT need a business account to call in your order. Once you are a trusted customer of your location you can phone in your order.

The major difference between a personal purchase and a business purchase is that business account can have the card value up to $1K and still pay only $3.95 per card. Though I am sure you know that, the activity on the cards bought by business account is closely tracked. Anything deviated from organically spending it down would cause the business account be shut down.

My experience is that you can not only call ahead (or email) as a consumer, but they prefer it for large orders. That way they can handle it when they have down time and not hold up the line for regular customers. However, there are apparently some locations that refuse to do this, claiming they can only suspend one transaction at a time. I’m not sure if there are different versions of the software or if the workers just aren’t sure what they’re doing.

That's the catch though. If the CSR turn over is high, like at the Simon Outlet near me, and they don't know you and if they aren't familiar with the system they don't know how to look up your past orders they will not take a phone order. I've also had instances where I would call multiple times during the morning to schedule an afternoon pick up and there would be no answer at the CSR desk. If I email the location's business client representative I almost always, she's not there on the weekend, get a reply within the hour telling me my order will be ready when I get there.

CL

Question for the heavy hitters, are you cycling your credit or do you just have really high CL’s on the cards you use at Simon?

Cycling is a very high risk activity. I was closed by Chase for that.

A little bit of A, little bit of B. Have a few cards I can make 3-4 trips to simon before hitting CL, others its just 1 trip. I try to liquidate and then payoff balances rather quickly on all cards- 1-2 days for a 10k order of cards. And I make sure to sprinkle in organic spending on all my cards in between big Simon purchases.

The Simon Mall in Independence, Mo just changed hands after Simon defaulted on its debt. No more Visa GCs there as of 2/16.

I've been cycling my three CC's, with purchases other than GC's, and haven't had an issue. I did call the CC companies and told them what will be happening, and so far no issues, this has been going on now for 2.5 yrs.
