Does anybody else imagine CVS blowing up behind you, as you walk out with 5K in reloads? Or is it just me? :D

I also picture this, walking away in slow motion, fanning myself with 10 VR's and not looking back.

One NYC location. North of 14th Street. Bought many previously.

Just got rejected. A cashier told me, cash only starting today. I didn't ask for why and just walked away -

AO ECP, all is well.

Corridor! Mar 31, 2014 11:48 am

I just purchased one 45 minutes west of Chicago and I paid with cc.

SJC still good for this morning. Bought $5k PP, which were on the list with VR.

So, when can we expect an apology from you guys?

Holy cow, in a world where Photoshop is easy, the internet spreads wild rumors, information about all of us is easily accessible online (have you done a Google search with your name recently?), April Fool's day is coming, and almost all of the confirmatory evidence is from folks with nothing for experience at FT, it's amazing how many folks are buying into this.

Really, you think some freaking customer got an internal CVS memo handed to him across the counter with proprietary information about CVS employees and inventory control numbers and email addresses and telephone numbers? Really? I'd fire everyone responsible for letting that information out. And from a company that most folks in this thread have screamed that their employees overapply company policy? Geez, do you think that company policy might be not to hand out secret information about coming changes in the company policy? And do you think it's possible that an internet prankster could get information about Cary Chaney simply by doing a basic internet search?

I bought VRs tonight after 8 p.m. at my local store. CVS is really good about posting information at their gift card racks about what can and can't be bought by credit cards--although I'll agree that sometimes front-line people don't always know what CVS's policies mean. So, don't you think it's possible that CVS might have put up a sticker at the gift card rack that would notify customers of a possible coming change to policy? Don't you think it's possible that with April 1 right around the corner, that some CVS employees are playing a prank on some of the gullible basement dwellers we have around here who'll freaking believe almost anything so long as they can have their every six month ride in business class so that they believe they're something more than they really are?

And, don't you think it's possible that there are some folks posting in this thread who can't wait until Tuesday to go: "April Fool's"?

If there is any thread on FT that shows just how illogical the internet might be, the last twelve hours in this thread is it. I'm not sure who I pity more: the folks who might be buying a load of crap from internet pranksters and CVS employees who are selling them a load of BS or the folks posting in this thread who can't wait until 12:01 a.m. on Tuesday to scream, "April Fool's!"

Given that CVS has generally expanded the ability to buy VRs while putting reasonable practices in place to reduce fraud, I'd think that there'd be a more gradual rollup to such a significant change. Given the ridiculous nonsense I've seen from some posters in this thread, I'd rather sit in the worst seat in the back than sit next to some of these fools in first class.

Intended to purchase some in South Bay. No comment, because you guys had already cleaned out every CVS near me :D

My usual one told me they were getting some in stock this afternoon, but they wouldn't hit the shelves til tomorrow. Guess I'll be checking in with them again tomorrow...

Yes, especially the panic buying for both MSers & criminals. But, the existence of the memo seems real according to the circles & arrows blog. Also, how stupid of the CVS manager to let regular customer(s) take a pic of such "internal" memo. Such memo infuriates the panic buying.

It's not about the VRs...

What a horrible day!

First place I went to, I asked if they still take CC for VR, and she said "Of course, why wouldn't we?". I feigned surprise and said "But I thought it's cash only starting today". The cashier had no idea what I was talking about, so I showed her a copy of the email. She immediately canceled my transaction. Bummer!

I tried at another location, and didn't say anything. However, the cashier was prompted with "Is customer in front of you?" So she answered "No" because I was browsing the chewing gum section at the time, which was a little to the side. Strike out again!

Finally, I went to my final location and tried to check out but was told "Cash only for VR!". I stormed out of that Walgreens and will never go back.

And after all this, I'm still gumless.

Uh huh, utterly impossible that any of the folks posting "cash only at my local pharmacy" are people pissed that VR cards are nearly always sold out there, and are hoping to scare others off to keep a ready supply available for themselves.

My theory is this is not an April Fools joke; it's a gorilla marketing campaign. By spreading this false rumor, many thousands of customers are lured into the store, where they buy many thousands of $ of VRs, and probably other items as well. So the quarterly profit report goes thru the roof. Boosting the stock price so insiders can sell at a higher price. ;)

Good quesiton. I base it off the published interchange rates of MC and Visa and my professional experience. You can get an idea of the MC fee structure here;

http://www.mastercard.com/us/merchan...d_Criteria.pdf

When viewing these rates, keep in mind that this is only part of the cost. There are additional assesments for things like fraud protection, ccv codes, address verification etc.

The landscape began to change in 2007 when I began to see the fees charged my clients for accepting rewards cards double in some cases. Most of my clients were convinience stores and swipe fees could easily be their largest expense after labor. You'd think that one solution would be to stop accepting rewards cards. However, MC & Visa won't let you. You have to accept all cards on their networks.

As pointed out earlier, the major retailers are able to keep their costs down by doing the upfront processing and negotiating favorable rates. Even after that, the largest retailer in the world (Walmart) still pays between 1 and 3 percent for rewards cards. This is according to their filing in their $5 billion lawsuit against Visa.
