I just got back from CVS, attempting to buy some VRs. Last month, this particular CVS changed their policy from $1K/day to $5K/day (finally!!). About 3 weeks ago, I purchased $2.5K worth w/license scan...no problem. Today, after scanning my license, the cashier asks if I've purchased any recently, and I say "no, not for about 3 weeks". She tells me that the screen is telling her to remove the 2nd VR from the transaction, allowing me to only purchase one at a time. She shows me the screen to confirm it with me.
The cashier was aware of the $5K/day rule, and we both couldn't figure out why this happened...anyone have any idea?? |

While I agree in principe, and I think copying a license is totally unnecessary in this setting and would probably object if someone tried to copy my license, I can think of a number of settings where copying a license would be fairly routine. The one that jumps to mind is test driving a car - they always make a copy of your license if you take a car out.

I'm in an area where there probably isn't as much MS as compared other places (home airport of RDU)

I once had a dealership request to make a copy of my DL. I allowed them to, not really thinking about it. I didn't ever return to the dealership after the test drive, nor had I discussed any sort of purchase, but a few months later when I checked my credit report, I saw that they had done a hard pull on me without my permission.
edit: wow, looks like they just have to enter all 9s in place of the real SSN |

I have taken this game as far as becoming a "partner" with one of the prepaid providers. Not going to say whom, don't bother pm'img. Working on the details of how. It is in part legit spending/users and obviously a part for me to MS. All I can say... MS is a blip on their radar. The vast majority of the buyers are actually their target demographics.
The demand for prepaid products is going through the roof, with more and more companies announcing products regularly. Seen plenty of empty VR spaces, but never empty Vanilla GC. Wow. Every CVS around here has at least 2 or 3 gift card racks now. Business is that big. +1111111111 I am also looking into private labeling as part of my business plan. Just recently got into this for MSing but we've had plans to private label for over a year now and have not engaged. We currently give out GCs to our clients and perhaps now is the time to give them under our own label. This business reminds of the long distance prepaid calling cards back in 1992. I had a distributorship spanning half of the midwest selling calls nationwide at .25 a minute. A BARGAIN BACK THEN. |

Most people I know don't even know the difference between a Charge Card vs. Credit Card.
A confused mind so they will follow for fear of feeling "stupid?" |

Tell that to two CVS stores near me that recently got defrauded by thieves using fake IDs to purchase gift cards and rip them off of $XXXX each. One of them dropped the store limit to $1k. Another two grocers also lost $XXXX on Reloadits bought the same way and now they're cash only. Just because a photo id matches a CC doesn't mean the transaction is guaranteed to be fraud-free.
Unless they don't scan them which wouldn't make sense. |
Yep, that's why one of my CVS is now calling the CC company for GC purchases, to verify that the CC number used matches the name on the card. They said thieves are using their own cards with stolen numbers and they've caught more than one person trying it. They also took all the VRs off the rack and moved them behind the counter.
Pain in the butt for me. |
Went to my regular CVS last week and bought my standard $2.5k worth of VR. Cashier was nice and asked me what it was about these cards that made them so popular. Explained the central idea and she was cool with it and then the weirdness started... For starters, the machine did not ask for my DL after the first one and then on the 2nd one got a code on the register that these were maxed out at $1k/transaction (turned screen to show me). At that point the manager came over to investigate and said that there was now 'a CVS policy to sell only $2k of these per day'. We rung up another $1k on a separate transaction and then I left.
Went to another CVS on the way home that same day and bought $3k with no issues except for the standard DL swipe after the first card. Anyone else have anything like that happen recently? |
As this year's first quarter comes to an end, so will Citi Dividend's 5% at drug stores offer. Which other credit cards do you prefer to use at CVS?

Just yesterday I went to one of the CVS stores that I have bought VRs 2 months ago and yesterday they changed 2 things: Brought all VRs to the front counter and accept cash/debit card only. So I politely told the cashier "no thanks" and scratched that CVS off my list. Went to another CVS nearby and it accepted CC and bought 2K. In another story, one of the first CVS stores I went to was still imposing that $1K/daily limit even though it has clearly changed the $1K/daily policy since Aug 2013. |
For those of you who have found hidden cards in CVS, where are they typically hidden? Does someone just put them on the back of a different hanger behind the Chili's/Starbucks cards? If they are hidden in the greeting cards, are they all stuffed in a specific card or dispersed throughout? Do you have to manually flip through the entire greeting card section or has it been "fairly" obvious?
It reminds me of the goobers who hide clearance stuff at Target so they can comeback after the next mark down. |
If it's not hidden on the rack, it's pretty unfair.
I kind of consider fair game if people hide them behind other GCs on the rack, if they hide them elsewhere in the store, that's just wrong. VRs have a distinct look to them, you'll be able to spot a hidden VR a mile away once you realize you need to look for the black markings on the side of the VR. I usually just look at the sides of other gift cards and look for discrepancies. If so, I check to see if it's hidden VRs and more often than not, it is. |
