MHUpgrade is MH's implementation of Plusgrade's bid on an upgrade platform.
  • You can check if your itinerary is eligible for bidding on an upgrade (most are) on MH's website here, but it typically takes 24-48 hours after the ticket is issued for the itinerary to be in Plusgrade's system
  • You cannot bid for flights departing within 72 hours
  • Minimum bids are dynamically set based on various factors, and don't appear to change as you get closer to flight departure
  • Tip: If you're bidding the minimum, you should consider making the bid in USD unless bidding in your home currency avoids credit card costs that are higher than the difference in pricing (see this post)
  • Bid amounts can be changed or withdrawn up to 72 hours from flight departure. It does not appear that you can update the credit card number
  • Accepted bids will be processed within the 72 hours window, generally prior to 48 hours to departure
  • If your bid is accepted:
    • The credit card will be charged
    • You will be rebooked in "I" class for business class, "P" class for first class
    • You will receive an email notification from Plusgrade
    • You will receive an email with your new eTicket from the airline
  • Within MH Enrich, mileage accrual is based on the fare class on your original ticket. For partner programs, without manual intervention, your mileage accrual is based on the class you've been rebooked into, not the one from your original ticket. Retro claims based on original booking may be required, it is unclear yet if they will be accepted or not.
    • Note that "I" earns nothing, including no segment credits or tier points (it's as if you never took the flight) on AA, BA, CX, and probably other carriers (check your program's information), so from a frequent flyer standpoint you might end up worse off
    • There are multiple reports from multiple users in this thread that mileage on partner programs (BA) will be credited based on the earning rates (if any) from original booking class, following manual intervention/claim.
  • Please read MH's FAQs

Hi, in this situation where the flight was originally booked with BA Avios, can you still be eligible for a last-minute upgrade at KUL airport? I understand you cannot bid in advance with an MHUpgrade.

Looks like I have my answer: No paid upgrades possible on a Oneworld partner award ticket for an MH flight.

TGflyergirl, was there a next time since this post? I'm curious whether or not an award ticket (booked via a oneworld partner--for example, using BA Avios or AA miles) can be upgraded to the next higher class with cash as a last-minute upgrade at KUL.

(I understand non-232 tickets cannot be upgraded in advance using MHUpgrade bids, but wondering if an LMU at the airport a few hour before travel is possible.) Thank you.

I don’t know if they can, but I know they won’t. From the couple of times I’ve asked at KUL check in when on an Avios award the answer has been no. Would be interesting to see if anyone has a success story though.

Thanks for sharing your experiences with this. Too bad the A350 Business Suites are not bookable with oneworld partner miles or points anymore, at least as far as I can tell. When it was still officially a First Class suite, you could book it that way. Maybe things will change later, but seems like MH prefers to keep them out of reach of partner programs.

Flying out tomorrow night and originally booked one-way Economy Promo ticket 1.5 months out.
NRT to KUL on MH71 (over night flight) connecting onto BKK flight next morning for 33240 JPY (booked under O so no mileage except to their own Enrich program).

1.5 weeks after booking, got the first upgrade eligible email and placed the lowest possible bid at the time of 35365JPY for just the NRT to KUL portion.

Fast foward to 5 days before the flight, got the "Last Chance" email.
Accidentally cancelled my bid, so re-placed the lowest bid which was actually lower at 32890 JPY for the NRT to KUL portion again.

3 days before my flight got the confirmation that I've been upgraded.

If it's any indication, 5 seats left at Business Flex fare with 29 hours left to departure.

Took a dozen MH flights for qf status run last week- the occupancy in J was always less than 50% apart from the Sunday evening flight from Bali which was full. The newer pricing strategy is beginning to hurt.

Assume I'm crediting my flight to AA. I have a D class ticket on KUL-NRT, so I'm sort of considering upgrading into "first" (it's an overnight, so I could actually use the extra space etc). Will they rebook me into P, though? My TA could've booked P directly, but I know it will not credit to AA, and this is the flight that requalifies me for EXP, so I absolutely must have it credit correctly (retro request is fine, as long as MH does not actually truly rebook me). Any experience on this?

AFAIK, the new booking class is P. Having that said, I have a friend who was booked in Z class and he MHUpgraded it to P class and it credited as Z class in his CX account. This happened after MH changed it to Business Suite and P was an eligible class on CX.

Yeah that's what worries me ... P class earns nothing on AA, so I'm worried they'll credit it as nothing. I'll wait to see if anyone had any specific experience with this, and if not, I'll just not take the risk, I think. Technically, MH does say that it will credit "the original booking class", but I really don't want to fight this with two carriers who aren't likely to care. Heh.

Did you get any mileage and status points in your FFP post upgrade?

Last minute aircraft change to A330 mean a “downgrade” for me or travel in the original class after all should I say.

Seems a frequent occurrence on the night flights out of Narita. Disturbing.

Yep, I was just downgraded from a 359 to a 333 on KUL-NRT.

Yes, the days of the cheap Z class fares appear to have gone. Hopefully it is only temporary!
