MHUpgrade is MH's implementation of Plusgrade's bid on an upgrade platform.
  • You can check if your itinerary is eligible for bidding on an upgrade (most are) on MH's website here, but it typically takes 24-48 hours after the ticket is issued for the itinerary to be in Plusgrade's system
  • You cannot bid for flights departing within 72 hours
  • Minimum bids are dynamically set based on various factors, and don't appear to change as you get closer to flight departure
  • Tip: If you're bidding the minimum, you should consider making the bid in USD unless bidding in your home currency avoids credit card costs that are higher than the difference in pricing (see this post)
  • Bid amounts can be changed or withdrawn up to 72 hours from flight departure. It does not appear that you can update the credit card number
  • Accepted bids will be processed within the 72 hours window, generally prior to 48 hours to departure
  • If your bid is accepted:
    • The credit card will be charged
    • You will be rebooked in "I" class for business class, "P" class for first class
    • You will receive an email notification from Plusgrade
    • You will receive an email with your new eTicket from the airline
  • Within MH Enrich, mileage accrual is based on the fare class on your original ticket. For partner programs, without manual intervention, your mileage accrual is based on the class you've been rebooked into, not the one from your original ticket. Retro claims based on original booking may be required, it is unclear yet if they will be accepted or not.
    • Note that "I" earns nothing, including no segment credits or tier points (it's as if you never took the flight) on AA, BA, CX, and probably other carriers (check your program's information), so from a frequent flyer standpoint you might end up worse off
    • There are multiple reports from multiple users in this thread that mileage on partner programs (BA) will be credited based on the earning rates (if any) from original booking class, following manual intervention/claim.
  • Please read MH's FAQs

Just wondering, why would you want to upgrade on a flight from KUL to SIN? It's a 40 minute flight in J, with stale food, and no alcohol. The Kacang Masin (salted peanuts) in economy can be considered to be a lot more palatable (and to me, one of the best packaged inflight snacks ever )

As to upgrading at the airport, you should be able to do so (or at least try), at check-in or at MH lounges. They often proactively offer to upgrade at a fixed price at check-in in many airports too.

A few years ago they introduced the policy of not offering alcohol on any flight under three hours, irrespective of the class of travel and for both domestic and international.

I too would save the money and have a bit of a splash when you get to Singapore.

+1

ATColad, What Minz56 said. Unfortunately, MH was cutting costs in 2016, and practically, all flights (with a few exceptions) under 3 hours aren't stocked with alcohol. Do have fun though. Singapore has many to offer.

Wow that’s a major cost saving to undertake. Especially for a National Carrier. The only other airline I have been on that didn’t serve alcohol was Air Aisa! Will Defo not be upgrading now! Thanks for info.

Safe trip mate. It's a pleasure. Would have been otherwise disappointing to upgrade and find that they don't have champers on board

Sorry if this has already been asked.
I got my email today regarding upgrades on a CAN-KUL-LHR flight I have in a months time. Someone else said that the prices dynamical change up until 72 hours before departure. I assume this means the price will "dynamically" go up and not go down?
The minimum bid for the CAN-KUL leg for me is more than double what someone in the OP won their seat at.

seems unlikely that it would go down.

Also, the upgrade bid prices are additionally dependent on your booking class. Usually, the cheaper you paid for the ticket, the higher the bid prices start.

That explains quite a bit. Got my ticket for under £300 even after the exchange rate and bank fees so it doesn't surprise me that they want quite a bit for upgrades.

Yeah...

Sometimes it may be outright cheaper to book business than it is to use the upgrade scheme, especially given how often MH makes C fares very cheap lately. Something to take into account, if you're ever planning to fly MH again

safe travels,

I''ll add emphasis on clubeurope's point about checking biz tickets prices especially if you can upgrade after initial Y class bookings.

Have flown MH on 5 roundtrips now on regional routes (1 - 4.5 hours) in the past year and have consistently found the MHUpgrade pricing to be higher, often significantly, than purchasing a business class ticket outright if you can find discounted fares (usually z bucket). I upgraded a few of those flights via our corporate travel desk for much lower costs than MHUpgrade. I'm assuming the prices for mhupgrade don't go down as you get closer to departure.

While I get that MH, like any commercial entity, needs to maximize revenue, having empty biz seats doesn't seem like it would help accomplish that. I'm not suggesting charging peanuts for it, just not the >2x I've seen for my flights over the past year. I'm guessing incremental cost of pax in C for regional flights are relatively low and should be easy to price it right via MHUpgrade to get more buyers. Not much in F&B options on those 738s anyway so unless a pax goes crazy on booze, looks like MH is leaving good money on the table. I saw at least 2 empty seats on all but 1 of my segments flown.
