MHUpgrade is MH's implementation of Plusgrade's bid on an upgrade platform.
  • You can check if your itinerary is eligible for bidding on an upgrade (most are) on MH's website here, but it typically takes 24-48 hours after the ticket is issued for the itinerary to be in Plusgrade's system
  • You cannot bid for flights departing within 72 hours
  • Minimum bids are dynamically set based on various factors, and don't appear to change as you get closer to flight departure
  • Tip: If you're bidding the minimum, you should consider making the bid in USD unless bidding in your home currency avoids credit card costs that are higher than the difference in pricing (see this post)
  • Bid amounts can be changed or withdrawn up to 72 hours from flight departure. It does not appear that you can update the credit card number
  • Accepted bids will be processed within the 72 hours window, generally prior to 48 hours to departure
  • If your bid is accepted:
    • The credit card will be charged
    • You will be rebooked in "I" class for business class, "P" class for first class
    • You will receive an email notification from Plusgrade
    • You will receive an email with your new eTicket from the airline
  • Within MH Enrich, mileage accrual is based on the fare class on your original ticket. For partner programs, without manual intervention, your mileage accrual is based on the class you've been rebooked into, not the one from your original ticket. Retro claims based on original booking may be required, it is unclear yet if they will be accepted or not.
    • Note that "I" earns nothing, including no segment credits or tier points (it's as if you never took the flight) on AA, BA, CX, and probably other carriers (check your program's information), so from a frequent flyer standpoint you might end up worse off
    • There are multiple reports from multiple users in this thread that mileage on partner programs (BA) will be credited based on the earning rates (if any) from original booking class, following manual intervention/claim.
  • Please read MH's FAQs

Having checked Expert Flyer, there are 3 maybe 5 seats open. So I imagine they might be hoping for a full fare paying passenger.
I put a bid in for KUL-KCH when I booked about 6 months ago for a flight in April. Now it says that I am not eligible for MHUpgrade. I've seen other similar questions. Is MH just hoping that they will fill it with paying passengers?

An Update, I put a bid in back in January. A few days ago it was saying i was not elibible. I fly Sunday from LHR to KUL, and overnight (Tue) I got the email indicating my bid was successful. It tells me I need to make sure there is sufficient credit on the card, which there is.
We will see if that actually works. There is no reason from my side for the payment to fail, I will speak to Amex to make sure the payment is not blocked. I made a bid just above minimum. And still in the low chance of success. I expect they have decided to fill the last few seats. Sadly I dont think they are any window seats left.

Do re-check the email you received, seems a bit early if you only fly Sunday?

If it was successful, I believe either you get a confirmation email that you were charged, or you get a notification that your bid was accepted but your credit balance was not sufficient / credit card could not be charged with the option to change your payment method.
(If it failed, you would just get a non-acceptance email.)

For the trip earlier this month, I got a notification email ~5 days before the flight that I needed to confirm my credit limit was sufficient in case my bid was successful, a few days before they actually triggered the check. Then I got an email on the actual success / failure of such a bid at around the T-50hr mark.

Below starting text from the ‘Check your limit’ email:

We are only able to process your offer if your credit card limit or debit card balance is sufficient between 72 to 24 hours before your flight departure.

It was basically saying make sure you have sufficient credit 72 hours to 24 hours before I fly. That would be they gave me 24 hours notice to make sure I have sufficient credit available, as I always clear my cards, there is no chance any transaction will be declined due to a lack of credit.
My expectation is that if there are sufficient seats, and my payment goes through, my card will alert me to the transaction and then I should be able to check my booking.

I got the same type of email as Crackjack posted, so I was assuming my bid was successful as they would not send me the mail otherwise. The real proof of course is once the payment actually gets triggered and the transaction is confirmed.

Ofcourse if this an email that everyone gets, even if there is no seats available, that would be a great way to upset a lot of customers !

Yes, that should work as a notification; you should also get another email from MH upon success or non-acceptance of the bid.

Unfortunately, I do not believe it only goes to guaranteed or even just likely successful candidates. I have gotten this ‘Check your credit limit’ email for bids which also failed, though not sure if it was a guaranteed failure even at T-5d, or whether something changed in the calculations the MHUpgrade system makes (e.g. the remaining J-seats were booked out after T-5d, but before T-50h)… just temper your expectations.

For my flight In 4 days. There are 3 Empty seats, 6 blocked, and 4 Empty First/Suites. So I am optimistic with 3d and 17 hours, there is a good chance of success.

Could be nice for everyone if they bumped some (solo?) travelers up to Suites to then make room for up to 4 MHUpgrade Business seats. Frequent fliers get a nice perk and MAS get more revenue....and hopefully someone sampling Business class may pay full cash for it in the future.

As MAS don't ever seem to offer any upgrades...what am I missing?

Now 9 blocked Seats in Business, all 4 free in Suites/First. All Seats blocked in Economy. No idea what that means.
Business have 4 seats that can be purchased at £5,076 with a £400 extra to Suites.
Update : T-48h No email either confirming the upgrade has been successful or not. 7 Blocked Seats. all 4 free in Suites

I usually ask the check-in agent or the ticketing counter what the price for a Last Minute Upgrade just for fun...in my experience it's always more than what a minimum bid was....and after declining I still see empty seats in J.

You are happy about not winning because GBP922 is an overbid? Obviously MAS didn't think so! Let us know if/how many empty J seats there are.

Typically my price point I achieve to Asia in J is a lot lower. So this was at the upper end. I will ask at check in, and the last time I did so, as you state, it was much higher than the minimum. I will report on empty seats, if indeed I get the opportunity to determine such. I will ask how many are available.
As I have an onward connection, J would be nice, but for £922 I would expect both sectors, and I know the onward part is full in J. The real issue, is a very short connection, and that will be a problem if i miss the firstof 2 flights of the day, as the second one is also full in Y & J.

I booked KL to Langkawi in February for a flight 25th March. I made an offer of 277 Rinngit per seat for two of us.
Landed in Singapore Friday evening, turned on my phone and was delighted to get the " successful updrade email."

Had a grand misadventure with MH Upgrade. Made the bid (low, cost, MYR 175) for BKI-KUL. ~3 weeks before the flight, I have to change to a day earlier. Upgrade offer was still for the original flight date and was really sticky. Took Close to 2 weeks of contacting MH before they could correct the bid. Accepted at MYR 175 for 2. Have to say it was for the seat and comfort only (lounge access, priority check-in nice too as we don't have OW status) as the onboard catering was truly insipid and uninspired. Had better food in the back cabin for KUL-BKK a few years earlier.
