So for a short-haul return we are talking about €86 YQ. Good bye cheap tickets - €86 was what I used to pay for a return Brussels-Germany all-inclusive...

Was shopping for a flight JFK-EU-JFK for the summar, noticed that fair is about USD1550 but fees etc. almost 1000, which is about 500 higher than used to ... seems like carbon tax already passed onto consumers.

Even prior to these increases, the YQ on SFO-FRA one way is a massive €188 in economy and increases to a scandalous €305 in business.

It's nothing short of daylight robbery.

Cool Fuel surcharge abolished?

No, it's not 1 April but don't get excited. I noticed that BER-FRA Economy fares on the A380 on 3 June included "International Surcharge" of €43.00. Further investigation has revealed that "International Surcharge" which also applies to domestic flights may be the new name for "Fuel and Security Surcharge" aka YQ.

Here are the taxes and fees for LHR-FRA-LHR some time ago:

Fuel and Security Surcharge (YQ) GBP 25.20
Air Passenger Duty (APD) (GB) GBP 10.00
Passenger Service Charge (UB) GBP 19.65
Here are the current taxes, fees and other charges for the same route.

International Surcharge GBP 65.40
Air Passenger Duty (APD) GBP 13.00
Passenger Service Charge GBP 24.97
Air Transport Tax GBP 6.10
Passenger Service Charge - Intl GBP 19.50
Airport Security Charge GBP 5.20
Is this euphemism or what? Shouldn't domestic passengers complain they should not need to pay any international surchage?

LH calls it "International Surchage".

Mon 4 Jun 15:55 Munich 17:00 Berlin LH2046 1h05 Economy (K)

Fare (per person) Taxes, fees and carrier charges (per person) Passengers Total
20.00 + 38.58 x 1 Adult = € 58.58

International Surcharge EUR 1.00
Air Transport Tax EUR 8.93
Passenger Service Charge - Dom. EUR 22.32
Airport Security Charge EUR 6.33
Total EUR 38.58
4U for the same route does not seem to charge any "International Surchage".

A rose thorn by any other name...

P.S. On Lufthansa's German website it is still "Treibstoff- und Sicherheitszuschlag" so it is only in English that the new euphemism applies.

He should have done a bit more research! SWISS may have recently adoped the practice that LH has been using since May. But SWISS has gone further than LH and adopted 'International surcharge' in other languages.

Internationaler Zuschlag
Supplément international
Supplemento internazionale

but not yet in Japanese
燃油特別付加運賃・航空保険料

But LH has only adopted 'international surcharge' on their English language website as you will see below.

German website (in German)
Treibstoff- und Sicherheitszuschlag
German website (in English)
International surcharge

Spanish website (in Spanish)
Sobrecargo por combustible y seguridad
Spanish website (in English)
International surcharge

Chinese website (in Simplified Chinese)
Fuel and Security Surcharge (displayed in English)
Chinese website (in English)
International Surcharge

Japanese website (in Japanese)
Fuel and Security Surcharge (displayed in English)
Japanese website (in English)
International Surcharge

Do you have to pay the International surcharge on LH when flying domestic? Swiss did (!) remove it from domestic flights, making ZRH-GVA und ZRH-LUG cheaper (especially when booking with miles.. well, not that many would do those routes only, but I guess it also gets cheaper when booking a milage ticket ZRH-GVA-XXX or LUG-ZRH-XXX ?

"Supplemento combustibile e sicurezza" as translated by LH.

I am "combustibile" when I read this (and not for the translation- just for the absurd amounts of money for a supposed incentive)! Thanks for the translation by the way. I guess I should be happy with my $609 redemption ticket and be quiet and get on with it.
