Any freight forwarder in the US has fuel surcharges, we even have it for some commodities based on feedstock that depends on fossil fuel. But all these are usually based on semitransparent indices.

Interesting emails from BA and QR I received this week.
BA is advertising one-way flights from Germany to London and a number of other UK cities (via London) at a flat award rate of Avios 4500 plus EUR 21 fees one-way. You can even do a stopover in London. What a bargain! Feels like using an award in the good ole days.
QR is announcing enhancements (in the sense of real improvements) to its frequent flyer program. Quote: "With the exception of Government fees and taxes, award tickets and upgrades on Qatar Airways will no longer be subject to any surcharges. This means reduced charges paid for an award ticket." Go figure! At the same time, the bloodsuckers at LH are probably thinking about new ways how to extract even more cash from awards.

A fuel surcharge was introduced because of fast changing oil prices. It should give the Airline to ajust the Price when fuel gets much more expensive, after a fare was published.
Now them use this Instrument for fares them already calculated with the higher fuel. And the only reason is to suck $$$ out from Award bookings.
Of course them could always find another Name for to charge the $$$, but then them should not be allowed to call it a " free Award ticket "

Eff next year the name change will take place in Germany:

LH Group is adjusting their YQ (aka 'international') surcharge eff 01APR14. Form then on, YQ will be charged based on the destination and and not the number of segments, ie a Germany-USA (East Coast) flight will have one YQ irregardless if you are flying non-stop or with a few stops. ie Good news for those of us who connect, bad news for those (like me) who fly direct
An example:
An example:
Durch die Änderung der Zuschläge dürften sich die zu entrichtenden Kerosinzuschläge / International Surcharges in vielen Fällen erhöhen. Hier ein Vergleich der zu erwartenden Preissteigerung:
Nordamerika (Ost) - Beispielstrecke MUC-NYC-MUC
Economy: Derzeit 264.00 EUR YQ - neu 320.00 EUR YQ
Business / First: Derzeit 364.00 EUR YQ - neu 420.00 EUR YQ
Nordamerika (Ost) - Beispielstrecke STR-FRA-BOS-FRA-STR
Economy: Derzeit 350.00 EUR YQ - neu 320.00 EUR YQ
Business / First: Derzeit 450.00 EUR YQ - neu 420.00 EUR YQ
Nordamerika (West) - Beispielstrecke FRA-SFO-FRA
Economy: Derzeit 264.00 EUR YQ - neu 360.00 EUR YQ
Business / First: Derzeit 364.00 EUR YQ - neu 460.00 EUR YQ
Nordamerika (West) - Beispielstrecke DUS-FRA-LAX-FRA-DUS

Business / First: Derzeit 384.00 EUR YQ - neu 460.00 EUR YQ
Asien - Beispielstrecke TXL-FRA-HKG-FRA-TXL
Economy: Derzeit 370.00 EUR YQ - neu 360.00 EUR YQ
Business / First: Derzeit 470.00 EUR YQ - neu 460.00 EUR YQ
Südamerika - Beispielstrecke MUC-GRU-MUC
Economy: Derzeit 284.00 EUR YQ - neu 400.00 EUR YQ
Business / First: Derzeit 384.00 EUR YQ - neu 500.00 EUR YQ
Naher Osten - Beispielstrecke FRA-DXB-FRA
Economy: Derzeit 240.00 EUR YQ - neu 320.00 EUR YQ
Business / First: Derzeit 340.00 EUR YQ - neu 420.00 EUR YQ
Östliches Mittelmeer - Beispielstrecke FRA-CAI-FRA
Economy: Derzeit 86.00 EUR YQ - neu 160.00 EUR YQ
Business / First: Derzeit 86.00 EUR YQ - neu 200.00 EUR YQ

Another clear mileage devaluation.
Soon, flights will be for free à la Ryanair and only YQ will be chargeable.
Thanks for the warning Oliver, time to use up the rest of those M&M's.

I'm really curious about why is it called "fuel surcharges"? What is the definition of it and how can the fuel charges continue to rise? Maybe they have have some better consumer protection agencies in EU?
Essentially, it is just a gimmick to have a reason to increase YQ and add to the profitability of LH Group. SCORE at its best

How about LHR (or other Europe)-FRA-XYZ? Does it also fall under the "regional charging"?

The multi-segment flights are no cheaper or a better deal in any way, in some cases a bit dearer. But the non-stop flights will be absurdly priced now.

The consumer people won't care since the total price is what matters when buying a revenue ticket. The surcharges that apply to awards are minor in the big picture, so they don't lift a finger on that one. The argument there is that if a loyalty/bonus programme is not attractive people will not use it, so no consumer harm done.
New system for surcharges
The airlines in the Lufthansa Group are updating and simplifying their surcharge system. From 1st April 2014, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Lufthansa and SWISS will introduce a standardised international/domestic surcharge levied on intercontinental connections on the basis of the entire flight route (O&D), replacing the current system based on individual flight segments. It means that passengers who transfer flights will be treated in the same way as those on direct flights.
The geographic zones used for imposing the surcharges will also be simplified and reduced to four standard amounts. The sliding scale based on travel class will continue to be used. Depending on the fare zone, the surcharge on intercontinental journeys in Economy Class will be € 80, 160, 180 or 200 to and from Europe for the entire one-way flight route; in Business and First Class, it will be € 100, 210, 230 or 250.
At the same time, the Lufthansa Group airlines will also implement a sliding scale based on travel class for short-haul flights in Europe similar to that used for intercontinental flights as introduced in 2013 (Economy Class unchanged at € 43, Business Class will be € 50 in future).
The new system will take effect when the new summer flight timetable begins and will apply to all tickets issued from 1 April 2014 for all Lufthansa Group flights.
The Lufthansa Group began to revise its surcharge system last year and linked its fuel surcharge to the travel class booked. It then replaced its surcharges with a standardised, Group-wide international/domestic surcharge at the start of 2014. The move means that customers now cover a larger share of the costs that the airlines have little or no control over. As well as the price of kerosene, these include security costs, insurance costs and air traffic control charges.
