Actually - take her to the Luxor. It's not great, but it's OK - and the price is right.
If she is a decent girlfriend, she will not mind. Unless she is a golddigger she will realize that you should not have to spend a fortune, and she will appreciate the fact that you took her on a trip. If she starts complaining about the room or the trip, it is a sign of things to come, and you should dump her as fast you can. |

I have stayed at the Venetian, NYNY and Harrah's before. We got an excellent rate ($49.00/night) at the Luxor since I am a travel agent. I have a few specific questions about the Luxor... 1) How are the rooms? I have heard that the $20 trick works here well and I am hoping it will work for me. I plan to slip a $20 or $50 under my IATAN card at check-in. 2) Does the Luxor offer airport check-in? If so, where at LAS is it located? 3) How is the pool? 4) Is the Egyptian museum worth the admission price or am I better off going to the ones at the Venetian? 5) Do the staff seem to be helpful? Thanks for answering and any other insight into the Luxor that you might have would be appericated!!! 2. No. 3. Again, average. Lots and lots of concrete. Can be pretty hot. Does not compare Mandalay Bay or Mirage. See for yourself here 4. Can't comment. 5. Again average. Its a big, medium priced hotel. There are better places to stay in Vegas (but $49/night is pretty good!). |
Luxor is not that great....
Try Mirage or Treasure Island. They often have room rates of 89-99-mirage, 59-79-TI a night. Those two hotels are much better than the luxor. If you do not mind spending a little bit more, try THEhotel at Mandalay Bay. They sometimes have $159 a night rate and they have amazing suites. My favorite hotel on the strip is definitely THEhotel. I think THEhotel is much better than Bellagio or Venetian. |
Luxor and Vegas
Some suggestions:
The Luxor is a bit worn. But not that bad for $ 49.00. It does have good location. Good news is its connected to the Mandalay. Go see the sharks ! Go for the upgrade for $ 50.00. You should be able to get the jacuzzi room. Its bigger and more "fun". Also has a free tram that will take you to Excaliber. Dont stop there ! Walk across the street. MGM, NYNY. Lots to do and see, nice and close. You mentioned Museum http://www.guggenheimlasvegas.org/ Take her to the Guggenheim at Venetian. Considering its in Vegas. Its a great museum and way worth the cost. I think its $ 20.00. If you enjoy fine art. Wynn has a little bit. Bellagio also has a nice offering. Vegas for a first timer is overwhelming. Let her have a great time. Go Offstrip. Rio and the Palms and the Hard Rock are ideas. If you are going DownTown. Do it at night for the light show. Enjoy ! |

Have you tried calling the Venetian direct to inquire about an agent's discount? They seem hungry to compete with the big "alliances", and may take care of you. Have you got a host anywhere or have you signed up for different hotels "internet specials"? There can be some pretty awesome deals (sometimes better rates than I get from my hosts!) Robin |

Have you checked the TA rates at the Mirage and TI? Years ago they were excellent but that was when Wynn was the owner. Since the Wynn is new he is very likely to offer a good fam rate there. It's worth a few phone calls.
By the way Luxor does not compare to the Venetian at all. Luxor is just a small step above the Excalibur. |

If the TA rate is $29 go for it and the money you save you can treat GF to a nice dinner at an MGM restaurant. Enjoy! |
Luxor = UGH
I know that there have been threads concerning the state of this property, but I just have to add my .02. I just returned from a stay this past weekend, and while it was totally comped (so, beggars can't be choosers), I will tell you that I would never spend a dime staying there again.
1 - The room. Requested non-smoking. It reeked of smoke. Compared to the other casinos that I visited over the weekend (Wynn, Mandalay and MGM), this one had by far the worst odor. Complained to the front desk...they sent up someone who got most of the odor out....but I could still smell it. (And no other non-smoking rooms were available). The room condition was run down. Drapes were worn, cabinets scratched,etc. 2 - The time shares. Every 10 steps, someone is trying to get you to attend a time share presentation. It begins when you set foot in the place, and never ends. They stop you on the casino floor, on your way to the room, on the way to the bathroom, leaving the buffet.... In previous visits, this never happened. Now, it is unbearable. :mad: 3 - The slots. I know, statistically all slot machines are pretty much the same in terms of payouts. Either my wife and I had really poor luck,or the slots there are much "tighter" than elsewhere. All I know is there were no issues at Wynn or MGM with the slots....while nothing we played, or was played around us seemed to be paying. 4 - The attitude. It just seemed like everyone there was pretty pissed with their jobs. From the front desk to the One Club desk, ("Where are you playing, because you're not playing enough here") there was a general attitude issue. So folks,heed the advise of others on this board. Stay away from this place. |
In the words of my wife, "The place is a tomb".
