Luxor - What room to choose?
Hi
My friend and I are off to the Luxor for a week next week. Does anyone have any recommendations about which room to go for, i.e. pyramid or tower? And within those options are there any further options I could look at? Bearing in mind we're using discounted tickets so no chance of upgrades etc. Many thanks Andy |
I read many LV websites and reviews about the Luxor before staying there last year. Many people seemed to recommend the Tower Rooms verses the Pyramid Rooms stating that they thought the Pyramid rooms were tired feeling and noisy. I an "princess" when it comes to hotel rooms and we had a Pyramid rooms and didn't have any problems with noise on the 3rd flower and found our room to be very adequate. It wasn't 4 seasons luxurious but it was definitly on par with a very standard Hilton/Marriott room. The pyramid rooms are much more convenient to activities within the Luxor.
As a side note the spa at the Luxor is open 24 hours. You can have a massage at 2AM if you are so inclined. :D |
Hi,
I thought that the pyramid rooms have only shower ( no baths) unless you upgrade to a jacuzi tub room. The towers have a bath and shower. I have heard that in the pyramid you can wait a while for the inclinators. I have stayed there a few times and always enjoyed the tower. Regards TBS |

Regards TBS There are gaurds checking keys to make sure only hotel guests are using the inclinators. FYI- the first four floors are also served by a set of "regular" elevators. I waited alot longer at Bally's for elevators. |
I prefer the tower rooms.
As mentioned: The novelty of the inclinators, the security check at the inclinators (to keep non-guests off the inclinators), and the sloped walls of the room wears off after the first night. Plus, if you're on the far inclinator (#4 IIRC), you've got a daily hike to the inclinator and then to your room. Plus, if the aliens show up (drawn by the light on top of the Pyramid), you know they are going do in the Pyramid before the tower. So you've got a few more min to escape. That's a huge advantage. Be sure to ask about an upgrade to a Tower suite at checkin. They charged us $50/night extra last year and it is a very nice suite. This was on an "internet-only-ridiculously-discounted-found-here-on-FT" rate. Well worth the extra $. |
I've gambled at the Luxor many times, but never stayed there. I have always wanted to though, I think it's the coolest hotel on the strip. Why go to the Luxor and then stay in the tower? To me, that would be like any other "normal" hotel in Las Vegas.

I suppose...but if your going to go next door to the pyramid anyway, why not go a little farther to the Mandalay Bay or NY-NY.
In my humble opinion (and thats all it is!) it's like going to visit New York, and then staying in New Jersey. Hey! It's right next door! ;) ;) |
Luxor Travelzoo promo rates from $69

Specific questions about the Luxor
Hello all! I have been to Vegas many, many times but I am taking my girlfriend for her first trip to Vegas (actually her first trip outside of the US Eastern Time Zone!!)....
I have stayed at the Venetian, NYNY and Harrah's before. We got an excellent rate ($49.00/night) at the Luxor since I am a travel agent. I have a few specific questions about the Luxor... 1) How are the rooms? I have heard that the $20 trick works here well and I am hoping it will work for me. I plan to slip a $20 or $50 under my IATAN card at check-in. 2) Does the Luxor offer airport check-in? If so, where at LAS is it located? 3) How is the pool? 4) Is the Egyptian museum worth the admission price or am I better off going to the ones at the Venetian? 5) Do the staff seem to be helpful? Thanks for answering and any other insight into the Luxor that you might have would be appericated!!! |

John Williams W/re: to the airport check-in, I do remember there being a big area for that right in baggage claim, but I can't remember if the Luxor was one of the hotels represented there-sorry. |

Actually - take her to the Luxor. It's not great, but it's OK - and the price is right.
If she is a decent girlfriend, she will not mind. Unless she is a golddigger she will realize that you should not have to spend a fortune, and she will appreciate the fact that you took her on a trip. If she starts complaining about the room or the trip, it is a sign of things to come, and you should dump her as fast you can. |

Does not compare Mandalay Bay or Mirage. See for yourself here 4. Can't comment. 5. Again average. Its a big, medium priced hotel. There are better places to stay in Vegas (but $49/night is pretty good!). |
Luxor is not that great....
Try Mirage or Treasure Island. They often have room rates of 89-99-mirage, 59-79-TI a night. Those two hotels are much better than the luxor. If you do not mind spending a little bit more, try THEhotel at Mandalay Bay. They sometimes have $159 a night rate and they have amazing suites. My favorite hotel on the strip is definitely THEhotel. I think THEhotel is much better than Bellagio or Venetian. |
Luxor and Vegas
Some suggestions:
The Luxor is a bit worn. But not that bad for $ 49.00. It does have good location. Good news is its connected to the Mandalay. Go see the sharks ! Go for the upgrade for $ 50.00. You should be able to get the jacuzzi room. Its bigger and more "fun". Also has a free tram that will take you to Excaliber. Dont stop there ! Walk across the street. MGM, NYNY. Lots to do and see, nice and close. You mentioned Museum http://www.guggenheimlasvegas.org/ Take her to the Guggenheim at Venetian. Considering its in Vegas. Its a great museum and way worth the cost. I think its $ 20.00. If you enjoy fine art. Wynn has a little bit. Bellagio also has a nice offering. Vegas for a first timer is overwhelming. Let her have a great time. Go Offstrip. Rio and the Palms and the Hard Rock are ideas. If you are going DownTown. Do it at night for the light show. Enjoy ! |

Have you tried calling the Venetian direct to inquire about an agent's discount? They seem hungry to compete with the big "alliances", and may take care of you. Have you got a host anywhere or have you signed up for different hotels "internet specials"? There can be some pretty awesome deals (sometimes better rates than I get from my hosts!) Robin |

Have you checked the TA rates at the Mirage and TI? Years ago they were excellent but that was when Wynn was the owner. Since the Wynn is new he is very likely to offer a good fam rate there. It's worth a few phone calls.
By the way Luxor does not compare to the Venetian at all. Luxor is just a small step above the Excalibur. |

Any comments about the Monte Carlo??? Their Travel Agent rate is $29  :D

If the TA rate is $29 go for it and the money you save you can treat GF to a nice dinner at an MGM restaurant. Enjoy! |
Luxor = UGH
I know that there have been threads concerning the state of this property, but I just have to add my .02. I just returned from a stay this past weekend, and while it was totally comped (so, beggars can't be choosers), I will tell you that I would never spend a dime staying there again.
1 - The room. Requested non-smoking. It reeked of smoke. Compared to the other casinos that I visited over the weekend (Wynn, Mandalay and MGM), this one had by far the worst odor. Complained to the front desk...they sent up someone who got most of the odor out....but I could still smell it. (And no other non-smoking rooms were available). The room condition was run down. Drapes were worn, cabinets scratched, etc. 2 - The time shares. Every 10 steps, someone is trying to get you to attend a time share presentation. It begins when you set foot in the place, and never ends. They stop you on the casino floor, on your way to the room, on the way to the bathroom, leaving the buffet.... In previous visits, this never happened. Now, it is unbearable. 3 - The slots. I know, statistically all slot machines are pretty much the same in terms of payouts. Either my wife and I had really poor luck,or the slots there are much "tighter" than elsewhere. All I know is there were no issues at Wynn or MGM with the slots....while nothing we played, or was played around us seemed to be paying. 4 - The attitude. It just seemed like everyone there was pretty pissed with their jobs. From the front desk to the One Club desk, ("Where are you playing, because you're not playing enough here") there was a general attitude issue. So folks, heed the advise of others on this board. Stay away from this place. |
In the words of my wife, "The place is a tomb".
|
Thanks for the update, I was thinking of staying there, but now I am going to reconsider. I really hate the time share pushers. I heard good things a few years ago about the Luxor corner rooms, did you happen to stay in one of those?
|
I was in a corner room in the West Tower. While the room was certainly large, as previously mentioned it was in a general run-down state. Nicks and scratches were on the furniture, the drapes were older....and the smoke smell was very evident. (As it was throughout the hotel). I'm not a real hotel snob, but both my wife and I noticed a different odor in the Luxor as opposed to the other hotels.
Even if you can put up with the rooms, the time share thing will drive you crazy. It was no exaggeration, they are hawking these things every few feet. You would think that some of these employees would recognize/remember your face after a while, but they continue to push them rather mindlessly. (I'm sure that their commissions are riding on referrals). Beware of the guy/girl that promises "free tickets to a show...or asks if you are staying in town for one more night". It was definitely my last stay there. |
Huh, I was at the Luxor for our annual kickoff last year and didn't get that.
I did decide that it was worse than any other Vegas place I'd stayed except for Treasure Island. They gave my room to someone else while I was at dinner than took thirty minutes and three sets of keys to realize it. So they upgraded me to a three room suite, which was nice and large but in no better condition. The maintenance guy who came to fix my barely working A/C was great though, and the workout facility was 10X as good as the MGM's and about half the cost. |
WE stayed there very recently; standard room was fine (clean and odorless), bathroom in very good shape, timeshare people in front only and bothered us only once (huge difference from Aladdin, where we were chased and insulted by a woman who had issues, not once but three times). Casino air was good, won at slots, lost at slots, came out a little bit ahead at the end, drinks came frequently (even when we did the penny machines). We were allowed to check in several hours early, baggage handling was fast and friendly, restaurants (buffet and cafe) were fine, BUT: front desk people are borderline surly, don't seem to want to be there at all. I gave them feedback on a website asking me for my responses, and never got a reply about that. (I love Venetian, but my sister in law was infuriated by a dirty room, lousy service, and rude people at the front desk. Go figure--luck of the draw?)

Luxor hotel for 109$,
is it worth? How is it compared to Aladdin? I have reserved with spg points and I am a Gold SPG member.
Edit? How is the http://www.mandalaybay.com/promotions/, I can get a room for 99$ with so many freebies. Is it close to strip? If not, how far is it? |

10,000 SPG points a night is a bit expensive for the Aladdin. I've done it during expensive periods like New Year's Eve, but for a regular weekday stay, I'd definitely look at the Mandalay Bay for $99 a night or the Luxor for $109.
Of the three hotels, Mandalay Bay is the nicest - nicest rooms, nicest common areas, good restaurants, and a nice casino. At $99 a night, it's a bargain, and I would go for that option if it was me. It's only negative is that it's at the far south end of the strip; however, that's offset by a free tram that runs to the Luxor and Excalibur, so it's not too bad. The Luxor is a good hotel-casino. The rooms are fair - the tower rooms are newer and in better shape; the pyramid rooms are nice, but a bit worn - you do have the novelty of a sloping wall and getting to use the "inclinators." The casino is rather worn and could use an update. Aladdin is nice, but there's construction going on right now which limits the casino and common areas. The rooms are nice and not affected by the construction. The big advantage to the Aladdin is location. It's across the street from the Bellagio and right in the heart of the strip. Given how many points it takes to stay at the Aladdin, I would definitely go with the Mandalay Bay or Luxor instead. $99 is a great deal for the Mandalay Bay, which would be my first choice. |
