So I just found a case where two flights, same points cost, required different certs. JFK-LHR, both 152,200 points for Mint direct. One need 2, one need 3.

Here's a data point:
Booked EWR-LAX Blue for $204/pp and was able to apply 1 mint certificate for the upgrade.
Cancelled and rebooked at $162/pp but it was now 2 mint certs for the upgrade. The mint price was $1116.
The mint price dropped to $852 and it went back to 1 mint cert for the upgrade.
When the mint price dropped it went from 2 certs back to 1. None of the mint seats were assigned at any point.

If you do not have Expert Flyer, Expedia can show you the fare class. If you select the Mint flight, click on "show details," and it will say something like Business (C).

Keep in mind that booking class code inventory does not necessarily correspond to fare availability. For instance, suppose the lowest I-class fare requires a 21-day advance purchase. Searching for availability on Expedia within 21 days will not produce any results, even if flights have I-class open.

On the other hand, this may alter purchase behavior of a much broader group of customers than FT members looking to maximize the utility of these certs. Lowest-cost inventory has been hard enough to find using tools like Sabre/Expert Flyer, etc...."I really want to leave LAX at 11am, but I see the 7am has upgrades for one certificate. I guess I can get up earlier and take that one."

are you signed in to your trueblue account? Email says you need to be signed in, so that may be the issue. It showed for me when I signed in and then clicked the Core fare.
