Narita International Airport (NRT) - Layover & Hotel
Where to stay overnight and what to do nearby

Narita Airport (NRT) is approximately 60 km from central Tokyo. It is blessed with numerous hotels, many with shuttles (served from the terminals' bus platforms) and often at surprisingly low rates for Japan. Some of these hotels offer free shuttles into the nearby city of Narita (Narita-shi).

If you have a few hours (say six or more) Narita offers many things to do--the Narita-san Shinsho-ji Temple and Park is beautiful and pleasant and on weekends one often sees performances of traditional arts and music. The Omotesando street leading there is lined with shops and restaurants, as well as a local museum.

See Mike Newman's Narita Layover Pages for many things one can do.

See the thorough online Japan Guide.

Sold! As a Gold, I'm guessing I'll get a decent breakfast? And is there lounge access?

I did see that the Hilton's website has a bus schedule on it. Seems straightforward enough (and free). Is it an easy trip to and from the airport?
$35 AND points? That's a riot.

Hotels in Narita can be in the high $30s-high $40s. Decent ones too.

I can gin up 8000 HHonors points for US$15. The Hilton isn't worth $35 + $15?

I did see other NRT airport hotels in the $30s and $40s. I assume the Hilton's a little nicer, especially if you get the Gold HHonors benefits. No?

Up to your own valuation iahphx, but I just booked DoubleTree KL, a 5 star hotel, at 10k/night. I probably won't blow 8k + cash here if adequate alternatives can be booked for <=$60, which seems to be the case. But of course, do so if you are comfortable.

For $50, yeah definitely stay there. I presume you'll get free breakfast.

Based on my valuation, it's ~$75. Are you solo? If so, then I think you have a decision to make. You'll find other fine choices in the area for less, breakfast buffet included. You'll probably find 3-star type accommodations for <$50, breakfast included. I don't know about $30's, though. If you're with another person, then I'd definitely take it for $75. You'd be hard-pressed to find a 4-star accommodation in the area with breakfast included for two for $75.

If you're interested in having stuff nearby to browse at, then you won't get that at Hilton (as others have said).

Yeah, traveling with the spouse, so it's breakfast for 2. I'll do another kayak search sometime -- especially if a great online travel agency code comes out -- but I don't think I can go wrong with a cheapo Hilton stay. Especiially since we're arriving after 9 and wouldn't have time to "do anything in town" anyway.

Based on your info, I think Hilton would be a no-brainer for total $75 (let alone $50 per your valuation). Understand that free breakfast is not a guarantee, although a previous poster and another thread suggest there's a good chance.

We have a 2hr 45min layover in NRT coming from Manila and heading to Seattle. Both flights are on Delta.

There is a sushi restaurant near gate 34 in Term 1 (Sushi Kyotatsu) that I've reading about for years and would love to go to for dinner. I know time will be tight, but will we have to go thru immigration and security before departure?

Never been thru NRT before. Would greatly appreciate if anyone can assist here...

Thanks!

You will just go through transit security which is fast and efficient at NRT - you have plenty of time...

Right, since the Japanese government views you as not actually entering the country, as long as you stay airside, all you have to do is go through a security screening on your way to your next flight, and the security personnel are efficient and polite.

All arriving pax walk together for what seems like miles until you reach a point where the people staying in Japan branch off to go through Immigration and Customs and the transit passengers go for their security screening.

One hour connection time in NRT?!

I'm looking at booking a trip from SE Asia to the US, on JAL. I'm offered a one-hour connection, which seems very tight to me. It'll all be on one ticket, but still....is it reasonable to make a one-hour connection on JAL at NRT?

I would be traveling in First Class in case that makes any difference (I'm thinking they escort me and whisk me through any potential delays - being so polite and honoring the first class passenger...maybe that's expecting too much...).

Ordinarily I would never accept such a short connection, but Japan is so efficient...

Assuming the flight to NRT arrives on time, you'll be fine, although you'll most likely be missing out on the fabulous JAL F Lounge in NRT!

I've made one hour connections at NRT on *A without problem, and usually had enough time to spend a few minutes in the lounge.

As always, YMMV @:-)

I had an 8 hour layover during a recent SIN/NRT/SFO trip and followed Mike Newman's guide along with some other online info.
Coming from Singapore and going to California, I wasn't dressed for the drizzly and chilly day in Narita. But, I had an umbrella and wasn't about to let being a bit cold stop me from getting out to explore a new town for a few hours.
I'd love to do this again, especially if it were a bit warmer weather and would even love to spend a night in Narita to have more time to explore.

All in all it was Easy Peasy...
1. Arrived NRT at around 8:30AM, grabbed a bite in ANA lounge before exiting through customs/immigration
2. Converted $100 US to Yen, the first moneychanger was closed but there was another a hundred or so meters away
3. Stored a rollaboard and small backpack for approx Y500
4. Walked downstairs to the train station, bought Keisei ticket for Y260
5. Found the train which was just about to leave and maybe15 minutes later was in Narita town, at around 10AM
6. Following the info I'd read online, I walked out of the train station and turned right on the main drag
7. Continued along that street checking out the shops that were just beginning to open
8. Explored in and around the temple for a couple of hours and it was pretty danged cold/cloudy up on that hill
9. I was now cold and damp, so I grabbed a good cuppa joe at a small coffee roaster directly across from the temple
10. Did some gift shopping along the walk back to the station
11. Enjoyed a beer and a delicious hot bowl of spicy pork ramen at Ramen Bayashi
12. A few minutes later, was back at the Narita station and purchased ticket to NRT at the kiosk for Y260
13. Found a seat on the train and was back at NRT about 20-30 minutes later
14. Picked up the luggage that I had stored in the morning
15. Bought lots of Royce Chocolates at a shop in the terminal as gifts for the folks back home
16. Got back airside, which was unbelievably quick
17. Back in ANA lounge to relax a while before the SFO flight

Sooo my Sat night layover is almost here. Staying at the APA hotel and landing at 4:30pm. I know the temple will be closed then (also leaving early next morning), but I would like to visit the park at night or early morning (around 7am) if possible. Would I be able to do so when the temple is closed? Is it easy to get to from APA hotel? Lastly I heard good things about Ramen Bayashi. Any other good places nearby to eat authentic Japanese food? I'll check out the links in the wiki but feel free to comment if you have any specific recommendation Thanks.
