Narita International Airport (NRT) - Layover & Hotel
Where to stay overnight and what to do nearby

Narita Airport (NRT) is approximately 60 km from central Tokyo. It is blessed with numerous hotels, many with shuttles (served from the terminals' bus platforms) and often at surprisingly low rates for Japan. Some of these hotels offer free shuttles into the nearby city of Narita (Narita-shi).

If you have a few hours (say six or more) Narita offers many things to do--the Narita-san Shinsho-ji Temple and Park is beautiful and pleasant and on weekends one often sees performances of traditional arts and music. The Omotesando street leading there is lined with shops and restaurants, as well as a local museum.

See Mike Newman's Narita Layover Pages for many things one can do.

See the thorough online Japan Guide.

Is a 1 hr 25 min connection okay coming from BKK-NRT on TG676 connecting to NRT-ORD on NH1012? I don't need to go through security again right? I remember on my ORD-NRT-PVG route, I had to go through security again at NRT, and there was no lane for premium cabin pax.

Yes, you have to go through security during transit at NRT. No, there is no premium line at transit security at NRT.

You should be fine as long as your TG flight from BKK is not delayed. TG at BKK should able to issue your boarding pass for NH flight out of NRT since both TG and NH are Star Alliance. If not, then I recommend doing online check in for your NH flight out of NRT before you depart BKK.

Dormy Inns are among the more upscale business hotels. I was pleasantly surprised at the one in Kurashiki: a full bath with a walk-in shower, a large bedroom. No wi-fi, but computers in the lobby. I don't recall if there was an Ethernet link.

If you have twenty-four hours, definitely go into Tokyo. The hotel area near the airport looks like every suburban airport hotel strip in the world.

Look up the Dormy Inn Ueno Okachimachi on Booking.com. I just may stay there myself on my next trip. One of the great things about traveling in Japan is that you don't have to pay tons of money to get decent (as opposed to luxurious) accommodations.

Keisei needs to build a mid-tier, full-service hotel on top of Keisei Ueno Station. I'd imagine that would do well. It'd also be a perfect hotel for layover or early flights, and obviously all those guests would be taking the Skyliner, further helping Keisei's business.

I've used Hotel Lungwood (what a name... did they misspell Longwood) in Nippori a couple times for early NRT flights. But of course Ueno has a lot more going on than Nippori. And Lungwood was very good when I first stayed, but they've kind of gone downhill.

Traversing NRT - some questions

So i will have a 24 hour layover in Tokyo.

Arriving on a Monday in October at 2:55pm on ANA.
Departing Tuesday 12pm Thia Airways.

Monday evening have dinner reservations at Harutaka at 5pm in Ginza.

I am thinking about storing my luggage in one of those lockers and just bringing a backpack with me into tokyo for the evening.

So, the questions.

1. What terminals do these airlines work out of?

2. Anyone have experience with these lockers storing luggage overnight?

3. Could i potentially check the luggage on Monday for the thai airways flight on tuesday?

4. How close will i be cutting the dinner reservation? They say i can arrive anytime, but the seating ends at 7pm so really i would need to make it by 5:30ish.

5. I am assuming i should go straight there in leiu of dropping stuff at the hotel(Ritz Carlton in Roponngi) correct? If so, whats the quickest route? Cab, train to tokyo station then cab?

I think that is all the questions i have for now. Thanks in advance.

3. Unlikely
4/5. Catch 3.38p Skyliner to Keisei Ueno, then transfer to Ginza line to Ginza... should get you to Ginza Sta by 4.45p. Another option is 3.44p NRT Express to Tokyo, then transfer to Marunouchi line which will get you to Ginza Sta by ~5p. However, I don't know exactly where Haruka is. You can make those trains if your flight's on time and provided the immigration line isn't crazy. However, you'll need to hurry esp if you need to swing by the luggage storage place. All in all, you're cutting it close. Needless to say, you will not have to stop by and check into your hotel.

Thanks. I will be flying BF into NRT, hoping there is some sort of fast pass to assist. If i miss the 3.38 skyliner, whats the next one? Also is there a site where i can punch in starting point and destination and it gives me directions using public transportation?

Harutaka is closer to Shimbashi than to any of the stations named "Ginza." If you go to any of the stations called "Ginza," you will be in for quite a hike. I would suggest taking the Ginza line to Shimbashi and looking for Exit 3. Print out this map

http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restauran...o.html#MAPVIEW

and take it with you to ask for directions.

The Narita Airport site has links to the schedules for all the ground transit.

Hyperdia is the go-to site for figuring out public transit routes throughout Japan.

Ok, if it's in Shinbashi, then:
- 3.38p Skyliner to Nippori, then change to either JR Yamanote or Keihin Tohoku line for Shinbashi (arrives ~4.45p).
- The next Skyliner is 3.58p. After transfer to JR, you should get to Shinbashi Station a few minutes after 5pm.

Yes, google Hyperdia.

Note that it may spit out itineraries where the station transfer time might be a little too tight in some cases, given that you're not used to navigating Tokyo's trains/stations.

I find Google Maps to be more useful than Hyperdia these days, as you can use specific departure and arrival points (e.g. your specific airport terminal to your specific hotel).

You can simply do a Google search for (e.g.) "Narita Airport to New Otani Tokyo," click on "Maps" and your directions will be right there. Adjust the departure or arrival time as necessary.

Thanks for the tips. Looks like between those apps i should be good to go.

The baggage storage seems easy enough since it seems both my flights are in the same terminal.

One additional question. Does ANA have any fast track on arrival through customers for BF?

Sorry, what is BF? Are you talking about United?

I don't think there's fast track at NRT's arrivals passport control, unless you're a diplomat or something. Actually, the fast track is to have a baby with you. That'll shoot you to the front of the line every time.

The passport control queue is usually not that bad... usually <10min. It can range from no wait to 20min.
