Narita International Airport (NRT) - Layover & Hotel
Where to stay overnight and what to do nearby

Narita Airport (NRT) is approximately 60 km from central Tokyo. It is blessed with numerous hotels, many with shuttles (served from the terminals' bus platforms) and often at surprisingly low rates for Japan. Some of these hotels offer free shuttles into the nearby city of Narita (Narita-shi).

If you have a few hours (say six or more) Narita offers many things to do--the Narita-san Shinsho-ji Temple and Park is beautiful and pleasant and on weekends one often sees performances of traditional arts and music. The Omotesando street leading there is lined with shops and restaurants, as well as a local museum.

See Mike Newman's Narita Layover Pages for many things one can do.

See the thorough online Japan Guide.

NRT Airport inside Hotel

Has anybody ever stayed at the hotel in the narita airport? How was it? I arrive from HKG at 830pm in july and my next flight to ORD is not till the next day at 11am. Is there a closer hotel with shuttle or is this one inside where i dont have to go thru the whole security process? Any info would help. Thx.

Welcome to FlyerTalk.

A broad question like this is better answered in the Japan destination forum, so I've moved it there.

IIWM, I'd opt for a lower cost hotel in Narita City rather than one at or near the airport. Get one that offers a free airport shuttle service and you don't even need to use the train. Even so, the train takes between 5 and 10 minutes to get there.

There are several hotels that serve travelers with morning flights. The Mercure gets high marks here but there are several others.

If you stay in Narita close to the station (or if your hotel has a shuttle,) that opens up your stay for a late dinner in town and/or an early excursion before heading back to the airport. The local temple is very nice and only a short walk from the station. The local shopping street is only a bit further.

There are "airport hotels" that are closer to the airport but those have virtually nothing nearby to see or to eat. You are basically stuck at the hotel between when the shuttle drops you off and when it picks you up to go back to the airport.

This is good advice ^

Airport hotels tend to be expensive, and town of Narita, what little I saw of it during a 9 hour layover, was very nice. Not much time in a.m., but still the best choice IMHO.

Does anyone know if Narita Airport's special promotion with a 50% shower discount and free access to the Traveler's lounge is still in effect?

I have a 4-hour stopover in early December and wouldn't mind the free wifi offered in the lounge.

Looks like this program is still going on. However, your travel date is in December. No guarantee that this program will still be going on in December.

Also, lounges and shower facility participating in this program is in non-secure land side of the terminal. There is shower facility in secure gate transit area but those at secure gate transit area is not participating in this program. You do need to go through passport control and customs, enter Japan, and come out on non-secure side of the airport terminal for this discount lounge and shower service. Then you need to go through security and passport control (Japan has departure passport control), and enter gate area for your departing flight.

I think those are doable in 4 hours of transit time. But same time you can simply go through the transit and stay at secure gate area during your 4 hours of transit. NRT has free Wi-Fi, although it is not secure connection, and there is paid Wi-Fi service which is supposed to be secure connection. There is paid shower facility at transit gate area.

If the transit is 2 hours then stay at gate transit area. If the transit is 3 hours then I may not recommend, the line at the passport control for non-Japanese citizen can sometime very long and slow. If the transit is 4 hours as in your case, I will say it is your call. You do hold a passport which allows entry to Japan without visa, do you?

The news story I read said the Narita Airport promotion was for travellers transferring between two international flights at Narita, which sounds like they'd be in the 'secured' portion of the airport.

I am planning a trip SYD-SEA. First is to book SYD-NRT with JAL in F arriving at 5:05 PM in one ticket. Then another ticket NRT-SEA with ANA in J departing at 5:55 PM. Is that enough time? I assume I will need to claim bag in NRT, clear customs, and then back in through security. Or is there a way to claim bag and then directly to connecting flight?

I cannot put both tickets into one (AA miles on JAL and VS miles on ANA).

If there is not enough time, then I probably will spend a night or two in Tokyo.

50 minutes is not enough time for that connection, which requires a change of terminals.

Hey all. I've read a bit (admittedly, not all) of this tread, trying to gauge the typical reply to layovers at HND. I got the feeling of what is feasible in terms of leaving the airport, but what if I just want to stay? I have a near 6 hr layover, and while I've popped out and explored on shorter layovers overseas, I have a feeling I'm going to be completely beat this trip. Will I drive myself nuts in the Sakura lounge for 5+ hours? Never flown JAL or been in this lounge. I figure a long shower and take my time eating, then waste about 3 hours or so with work, internet, nap. Do they have time limits to how long you can be in the lounge?

I'm sure you are aware that this thread is about layovers at Narita Airport (NRT) and you are talking about a layover at Haneda. Are you transferring from international to international?

Wow....that's embarrassing. Sorry. I thought it was a general "Japan airports" post. I guess I should have taking a closer look at the title.

If you're feeling adventurous, you could take the train out to Shinjuku for a couple of hours of site seeing, lunch/dinner, depending what time of day your layover is. It's only 15-20 minutes away, so not a lot of time wasted in transit.

For context, we actually like to fly into NRT, landing in the late afternoon, train into Shinjuku, grab dinner, and the head over to HND for our redeye flights to rest of Asia (and that's an approx. 8 hour layover)

Here are some threads which may be relevant to you:

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/japan...er-haneda.html

I asked if you were connecting from international to international because if your itinerary includes a domestic flight, you might as well spend some time in the domestic terminal which has many shops and restaurants.
