Narita International Airport (NRT) - Layover & Hotel
Where to stay overnight and what to do nearby

Narita Airport (NRT) is approximately 60 km from central Tokyo. It is blessed with numerous hotels, many with shuttles (served from the terminals' bus platforms) and often at surprisingly low rates for Japan. Some of these hotels offer free shuttles into the nearby city of Narita (Narita-shi).

If you have a few hours (say six or more) Narita offers many things to do--the Narita-san Shinsho-ji Temple and Park is beautiful and pleasant and on weekends one often sees performances of traditional arts and music. The Omotesando street leading there is lined with shops and restaurants, as well as a local museum.

See Mike Newman's Narita Layover Pages for many things one can do.

See the thorough online Japan Guide.

Had a 9 hour layover a few years ago and chose to go to Narita. Between transportation and clearing immigration / security on the way back, so will had about 5 or 6 hours to spend in town.

Just finished a visit to Tokyo about a month ago, and the cheapest way to get to town is by bus or train, but both take about one and a half hours, plus the time to wait so don't miss the train/bus @:-)

You also have to clear Immigration and then go through security, so your nine hours will more likely be about four in town.

Since this has already been bumped, I have 3 questions.

1)I will be arriving either on UA or LH ( not fully decided yet ) Will have a 3 1/2 hour layover with cnx to OZ or SQ. Do I have to go through customs on an int connection, and which lounges would I have access to. I usually have NRT as a final dest, so am no stranger to the airport have just never connected there before.

2) On the return will be leaving on LH 09:25 dept. Thinking of spending the night in Narita, having a nice dinner ( suggestions ). I would like to know if any of the in town biz hotels have decent bus connections to NRT, would not like to wake up at 5am unless I have to. Same with the Hilton or ANA in reverse can i get easy bus connections to town and back.

3) JR passes. Last time in Japan there was a 4 trip pass you could pick up at the JR office at NRT. Thinking of going to Kobe, but do not need a 7 day pass. I can't find them on the JR rail pass site.

Thank you! After careful consideration I decided to go to Narita too

Flying into NRT on UA metal with a connection to ANA into China via an award ticket. Have a 4 hour layover right now. Looks like some folk feel Narita is worth a quick visit. Have US passport so no visa issues. Just checking if some of the suggestions are still up to date.

If not, I can stay in the lounge for a bit. Any places in the airport worth getting a bite?

Thanks,

My rule of thumb for this is 5 hours but I admit to having a lower comfort level than some around here. You would have to clear Customs and Immigration, stash your bag(s), exchange a little money or stop at an ATM and go down to the basement train station. The actual ride is only a few minutes by local train and the town is pretty small. You could visit the shrine and perhaps have a meal but you would want to head back to NRT at least a couple of hours before your flight to reclaim any bags, clear security and get to the gate 45 minutes or so before the flight.

If you decide to stay at the airport, there are several decent places to eat but they are pretty much all outside security so the same time constraints apply for getting back airside.

Last time I checked, the sushi counter - Sushi Kyotatsu - in T1 airside was fine. AFAIK, the other airside options are a bit "institutional".

Flying into NRT at 9pm with an overnight layover. This means I'll probably get through immigration and customs at around 10pm. Any places in Narita city to go and get a bite to eat at that time?

There are grocery stores where you can also buy pre-made food.

Grocery stores? Convenience stores will be open, for sure. But if the OP wants a restaurant, he can find plenty of izakaya serving food and drink in the area around the railway stations

For example -
http://r.gnavi.co.jp/gb0y300/
(open until 1am - last order at half past midnight)

Some family restaurants will be open all night.

Sorry. I meant convenience stores.

Oh. I was just suggesting that you can also grab food to eat in your hotel or while sitting in the square. Not to sound anti-social, but I do that sometimes. It's not that bad. They have interesting food in the stores, and they're very decently priced. Just some food for thought. Otherwise, disregard what I just posted.

we fly in at 5:30pm, and check into the hilton narita. i have found the following list of restaurants:
papas
cafe le bon
grill house hero's
lion's den
shin shin
hitsujiya narita

i presume we would arrive at restaurant by 8pm. are any ones of those recommended over the others? i see trip advisor has about 200 listed.

i looked back about 3 years, and did not see restaurant comments.

If you stay at the Hilton Narita, you will be out in the middle of the highway hotel strip and nowhere near the town. Unless you take a detour into town and then take a cab back to your hotel, your dining options will be limited to the hotel restaurants.

unless cab is quite inexpensive, makes sense then to eat in the hotel. will be tuckered, anyhow after 16 or so hours of flight.

Yeah, but I wish to get some sense of local flavor as I don't travel to Japan often.
