I arrived in Japan yesterday.
For the Covid related stuff they asked if you had either the MySOS or the VJW filled out. I had the MySOS so used the QR code for that, a screenshot actually not the "live" App. On the LH flight we still got the paper versions of the Immigration Form and Customs Form, I filled them out just in case, even though I had already done the VJW. I ended up using the paper version for Imigration and the VJW QR code for Customs. |
Arrived HND earlier this evening on JAL from LHR. At the top of the airbridge were staff checking everyone’s phone for MySOS or VJW QR codes and handing out blue forms. This took maybe 5 minutes from getting off the aircraft - I was in economy. The quarantine checks were done in seconds - scan the QR code and give you a pink form about Covid safety and mask etiquette while in Japan. Heading to immigration I was approached by a staff member as I wasn’t carrying any paper immigration forms. Showed them the QR code and joined the queue. Queue speed seemed no different than normal. Maybe 5 minutes. Scanned QR code at immigration counter, photo and finger prints taken then off to baggage reclaim. Bag was going along belt as I arrived. Then it was off to the electronic customs check. Scan the QR code at a terminal along with your passport and get your photo taken. Head to the electronic customs gate where your photo is checked against the one taken and out into the arrivals lobby. All very easy and efficient. JAL website says the flight arrived at 16:39 and I was on monorail by 17:22.

I just filled out the visit japan web and is being reviewed. It was a pain!
I tried doing it on my laptop using edge, would not open the quarantine procedure! I ended up using edge on my iphone and it worked (who knows). Just don't do it in a hurry. update: I submitted all documents at around 1 pm pacific time on a Sunday and received approval just past 5 pm. My application has turned green. So pretty fast. |
Is it possible to update at a later point of time intended address of stay?

You can go back and finish up later, but your color will not change to green until everything is completed and reviewed by them

Similar solution to the Quarantine Questionnaire, I just logged in on a different computer and now everything is good. Just waiting for the review of my US vax certificate.

My arrival experience (NRT, 08 Nov 2022, mid-afternoon Japan time)
Here’s a lightly edited version of something I posted yesterday in a Japan travel group (on Facebook).
PRE-DEPARTURE I registered my vaccination details on MySOS a few weeks ago and received a blue screen within a couple of hours. (Note: This was BEFORE November 1st when the quarantine functions were integrated into VJW.) I did a separate registration on VJW for immigration and customs, and instantly received QR codes for both. EN ROUTE Cabin crew distributed blank immigration and customs forms during the flight. I chose not to fill them out since I’d already pre-registered for both on VJW. PRE-DISEMBARKATION After we landed at NRT (note: I flew with Japan Airlines), the cabin crew announced that passengers should remain in their seats until the quarantine officers at the airport communicated their instructions about who should disembark first: (1) passengers entering Japan or (2) passengers transferring directly to other flights. (I suspect this varies depending on which checkpoint is more crowded, inbound or transfers.) Surprise surprise, everyone ignored this announcement and stood up immediately after the aeroplane docked. Once the doors were opened, cabin crew announced that passengers entering Japan - myself included - should disembark first. Those transiting at NRT without entering Japan (easily identified via the large yellow-bordered “TRANSFER” tags on their hand luggage) were politely but firmly asked to resume their seats or stand aside. Needless to say, getting off the plane was easier said than done as the aisles were clogged with transfer passengers who had ignored the earlier announcement and were not immediately next to their original seats. QUARANTINE CHECKPOINT On the long walk from the gate, I immediately connected to the free airport WiFi and loaded up my QR codes. I showed my blue screen to one of the staff who handed me a blue card, which in turn allowed me to swiftly clear the checkpoints all the way to the final quarantine counter. After turning in the blue card, my QR code was scanned, I was handed a slip of paper with health precautions etc., and then they waved me towards immigration. IMMIGRATION Staff members checked to see whether passengers were in possession of either (1) a VJW immigration QR code or (2) a completed paper form. I showed my QR code and was allowed into the immigration queue. The process was essentially the same as before the pandemic - photo, fingerprints, sticker in my passport - except that I didn’t have to turn in a paper form (the officer simply took my phone and scanned the code). CUSTOMS After collecting my luggage, I queued up at a kiosk where I scanned (1) my passport’s information page and (2) my VJW customs QR code. The kiosk took my photograph - mask off for that bit! - and then I marched over to an e-gate. I removed my mask a second time, walked though the first set of gates which closed behind me, the camera recognised my face, the second set of gates swung apart… …and welcome to Japan. 😊 All told, the process took 20-30 minutes or so from aeroplane to exit. The main bottlenecks were A.) on the plane itself whilst we waited for an announcement on who was to disembark first (plus I was in Y not J so no priority disembarkation), B.) at baggage reclaim (again, Y passenger so no priority tags), and C.) at the customs kiosks where quite a number of people were in the queue to use them. Had I arrived at a less busy time and/or had I been travelling J, the whole thing might’ve been done with in 10-15 minutes. Cheers and it’s great to be back! |
MNLFlyer,
Thank you for sharing your arrival experience in detail. Much appreciate it. I am still struggling to register the Quarantine procedure due to "web" problems. That page never opened up, after trying for days at different times and 3 browsers plus Android phone! Would it matter if I showed up at TYO airport with paper docs? It seems that it is allowed (?). |

To my knowledge (although I’m happy to be corrected on this point), pre-registration isn’t strictly required for the quarantine checks either. I believe (though can’t speak of this first-hand!) that you can present proof of vaccination/testing upon arrival, although the process will take longer than if you have a blue screen and QR code. Cheers. |

Yes, you do have the option to submit paper immigration and customs forms. The cabin attendants on my inbound flight handed out blank cards en route..

Question on the whole process: I'm booked next week to fly JAL on a BA stock ticket (avios reward) - I've filled in the full Visit Japan Web process (quarantine, customs, immigration) but what has happened to the API? I remember pre-covid having to fill in the Advanced Passenger Info on either BA or JAL. With this booking it's nowhere to be seen. Anyone has some tips on this? I want to make sure I'm not skipping any steps that would prevent me from doing Online Check-In on Monday. Thanks!

For the Preparation for immigration clearance/Disembarkation Card for Foreigner QR Code - is Yellow the correct color since that data is pending review of immigration upon arrival?

uploading documents/pictures was easy.
I am beginning to wonder if it was because of java scripts that causes problem. I set my computer to strict option and I think I am also blocking scripts, but I don't think my phone has that option. But I am not a computer guy so don't count on it. Good luck, but I think the QRcode only entitles you for the fast lane on exit. |
