Hiroshima April 2024
Hi,
Stayed for 4 nights in Hiroshima after Nagasaki ( at the Hilton) . Did not go to Miyajima Island on this visit but went to Iwakuni and saw the kinkai-kyo bridge and kikko park https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...70c90eb6ba.jpg The cenotaph and the a-dome building in the distance at dusk https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...c67e4ab697.jpg The Children's memorial in the Peace park https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...6a167f7b9a.jpg The A-dome building seen at dusk from across the river. The river was beautiful and still ( a cruise boat passed by a minute later and created waves). Dusk and nighttime in the peace park has a different atmosphere than during the day) https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...18e5fd010d.jpg Looking back at the museum walkway from the cenotaph ( on previous visits the walkway lights have been switched off at night). Tents on the right in preparation for the early may flower festival) https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...8f212ce0a5.jpg In front of the museum ( cover over the fountain for the flower festival) https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...6de1f91b56.jpg View from the walkway in the museum towards the peace park, cenotaph and A-dome building https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...a44c39e507.jpg The hypocentre ( ground zero ) monument on a side street close to the A-dome building ( 160m roughly ) https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...1f1c284d63.jpg A Star wars pop up store sign at Parco department store ( far end of Hondori shopping street). My brother loves star wars so bought a few small items for his christmas present in December ( reasonably priced) https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...c43f0813b8.jpg Shukkien garden in Hiroshima ( close to Hiroshima castle and station). Beautiful garden. Got talking to a couple of Australians ( green and gold caps) who were on a garden tour of japan. Quite a few people in the park but not too bad and peaceful ( expected more people during Golden week) https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...3ce8b0e771.jpg. View from small hillock ( representing Mt Fuji) . There is a small bamboo grove ( behind the hillock) and around the garden there is a small memorial to the atomic bomb victims who were found here https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...07cf7b4d24.jpg Hondori street at night ( roof cycles through a few colours). Found it nice to walk under the roof rather than the peace boulevard when it was raining) https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...3b39c041ea.jpg The atomic bomb memorial mound in the peace park on a rainy day. This part of the park seemed a lot quieter as it seemed to me that a lot of visitors just visited the Museum, the cenotaph and the A-dome building . There are a lot of memorials in the park and well worth taking the time to walk around the park. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...869a804c25.jpg The A-dome building from the rear and the peace clock to the left on a rainy day Regards TBS |

TBS, your appreciation for Jpn is very apparent. For a Japanese, that is gratifying to see.

I’d be freaked out if I ran into that.
At the Intercontinental in Appi Kogen, I saw a pretty large dragonfly get stuck in a spider web. I thought the spider had lost its web, until it came out and was pretty capable of handling a dragonfly for lunch. I did not manage to get a good picture, conditions were not great for a photo. But suffice to say, Japan has some pretty impressive spiders, but they are all harmless to humans. |
It’s the caterpillars I worry about!

Iwakuni 28th april 2024
On Sunday 28th April , ( start of Golden Week) I decided to visit Iwakuni ( for the kintai-kyo bridge and had intended going up the ropeway to the castle) as a day trip from Hiroshima,
Two main ways to get there from Hiroshima Station Local Train to Iwakuni then bus Shinkansen ( Kodama only) to Shin-iwakuni then bus Although the shinkansen is more expensive than the local train , I decided to go on the Shinkansen for the experience Some photos https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...6687c8e0b9.jpg Seats on the kodama Shinkansen ( going though a tunnel). Space for oversize luggage in front of row 1 ( only 1 seat on row 1) https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...9b918ea71b.jpg Model of the Kintai-kyo bridge at Shin-Iwakani station https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...6e853951d1.jpg Outside Shin-iwakani station ( nice for a short walk whilst waiting for the bus ( c every 30mins or so) https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...07b8a24c89.jpg Walking over the 5 arch wooden Kintai-kyo bridge https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...a7af6ed4eb.jpg View from the bridge arch. The tents on the left were serving food ( ie grilled beef on a stick for Y600 etc) and would have lunch there later https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...fa08d7e8b7.jpg View of the bridge from the far side ( beautiful riverside path) https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...d96b909dbe.jpg There were a large number of tents along the river bank with items such as plants and bric a brac for sale https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...db266df382.jpg Statue close to Kikko park. Beautiful to walk up the road. Top of the ropeway station in upper left and Iwakuni castle just to the left of the top of the sword. https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...a7a45cd62b.jpg Heading to the lower ropeway station. some beautiful temples and museums here https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...910728b473.jpg The lower ropeway station with the ropeway leaving. There was a bit of a queue and I had booked a relatively early train back so decided not to go up and just explore the park and temples. https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...a40a0dbda3.jpg A small but beautiful garden with purple wysteria just blooming https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...ac7eba0710.jpg Loved this fountain in kikko park. Castle on top of the hill https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...e9645f153c.jpg Nice view of the bridge and castle whilst on a bench having lunch. Wooden boats on the other side of the bridge for short tours on the river https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...aa28295d25.jpg View of the middle arches from the waters edge https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...aea8f0e557.jpg Took a bus back to Shin-iwakuni and had about 40mins before the shinkansen so walked outside the station and found this small platform which looks abandoned https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...338e83ffdb.jpg A small platform hut. Whilst there were no english signs , about three people were sitting on chairs under the awning so looks like this is a small local line ( no idea on destinations or timetables ( a map showed a direction to JR station ( entrance 300m) https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...2172bec59f.jpg Poster for Expo 2025 in Osaka https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...ebb4444a96.jpg Beautiful artwork at Shin-iwakani station of the kintai-kyo bridge and the hills beyond There is also a convenience store which had some souvenirs at the station Whilst I did not get to go up to the Iwakani castle , I could easily have spent the whole day here (like 3 days in kyoto , this was almost a taster visit) as there is a lot to see and do and enjoyed it very much Whilst waiting for the Kodama trains on the platform, the Nozomi shinkansen pass the station at full speed so you feel, hear and see the speed of the trains Managed to get a shot with my DSLR https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...533aee57af.jpg Shinkansen ( Nozomi probably) going on the two centre tracks heading to Hakata probably. Taken at Shin -Iwakani. Slower trains ( Kodama) use the tracks by the platforms then join the fast tracks. No platform barriers here . Regards TBS |
