Yet another stunning area of Japan I knew nothing about!

Tokyo 30th April to 2nd May

Hi
My final 2 days in Japan ( 16 in total on this trip ) was in Tokyo ( then flying to HKG) and stayed at the Conrad.
Originally I was planning on having a quiet birthday afternoon in the hotel but the forecast for the next day was 100% rain so decided to go to the Hamarikyu garden ( across the road from the Conrad but you have to cross two/three crossings) after check in . It was a quick visit as the garden closed at 5pm but it is a very nice garden with a tea house in the lake, a 300 yr old pine etc. The river cruise boats were no longer picking up passengers here

View of my hotel from the lake close to the tea house ( had a city view room this time )

Got a Conrad Tokyo box with a couple of small cookies and another small Conrad tokyo bear as a birthday gift

A matcha tiramisu pancake for breakfast

It was raining so decided to go to Ueno park for the museums. A bit of a queue to get in but the Peony flower garden was open so went there instead

https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...734ecaa800.jpg
Loved the flowers and the layout of the garden with umbrellas over many of the flowers

https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...4f8cf81039.jpg
Looked like the 45th Anniversary of the garden

https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...709486cbb2.jpg
Some beautiful small plants and objects also

The exit of the garden and the five story pagoda beyond

https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...f211b5c826.jpg
The mixture of overhead roads, passageways and ramps/escalators at the southern end of JR ueno station . Almost a typical modern tokyo view in my mind occassionally

https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...65b46ee2e1.jpg
Went to the Senoji temple. It was beautiful but busy ( did not buy anything as I had my souvenirs already) and the umbrellas being up did not help

https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...47c80530bb.jpg
Side view of the main temple hall . You can see the rain in this picture as the rain was getting heavier. Decided at this point to head to Tokyo Skytree to do some shopping in Tokyo skytree town before heading back to the Conrad

https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...5f1b88cd29.jpg
After shopping, heading back to the metro station. Lots of hanging carp. Quite a few people were going into the Tokyo Skytree entrance but given the weather ( low clouds passing as above ) and having been up before ,i gave it a miss this time)

https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...95197216d3.jpg
After drying off at the Conrad ( plus pool) , I decided to head to Tokyo station to buy some tokyo banana to take home . Still raining but it is a beautiful facade and plaza. The Kitte building with its 6th floor roof garden to the right of the station)

Inside Tokyo station

One of the main junctions on the Tokyo Station underground shopping street, close to the Tokyo Banana store with sakura ( fake I assume)

https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...965fa9d356.jpg
The next day ( leaving day for Hong Kong) and typically on a leaving day,the weather was better . I had a late checkout so decided to take the Oedo subway line from below the hotel 1 stop to Daimon and visit the Kyu Shiba rikyu gardens which were beautiful ( you can also see the tokyo monorail to haneda leave here and shinkansens passing by)

https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...cf3be13e30.jpg
The windows were reflecting the clouds quite beautifully that morning. The garden is wonderful to spend an hour or so in

https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...aefa85c4fd.jpg
Lots of beautiful rock and water features in the Kyu shiba rikyu garden. It is such a contrast from the neon and bustle of chuo-dori shopping street in ginza to the peaceful gardens of Tokyo.

Regards

Nice shots.

Besides the Daiso, shopping one (or more) of these is a solid value ;)

These are from November 2023. My hotel in Nishi-Asakusa was within strolling distance of this.

What is happening on the site of the former Tsukiji wholesale fish market which was about across the street? Is there new construction going on?

Didn't know about the Tokyo Banana, LOL.

Safe travel!

Even a blank line between photos is fabulous, so comments are gold :) (I have a difficult time visually processing posts that include dozens of photos strung together creating one big blob).

To escape the heat of this week, I decided to do my telework (as we call it in Japan) from Hachijojima.

It is a highly recommended stop on a Tokyo agenda. ANA has three flights a day, and there is an overnight ferry. At the moment Tokyo is running a campaign (yes this island is part of Tokyo) where you can buy 10,000 yen of shopping and hotel credit for 7,000 yen. Food is great, and a fair amount of good onsens. It is not whale watching season, but apparently it is a great place for that December to April.

Hachijojima seems like such an intriguing off the beaten path place.
I’m reading that it’s subtropical climate even though it’s only 300km and 2.5degrees south of Tokyo (about the same as the southern tip of Wakayama).

Metropolitan Tokyo also has a subtropical climate:

Inokashira is a nice park, the different trees offer a beautiful variety of colours in autumn. Overall Musashino and Suginami are probably my favourite areas in Tokyo.

Sankeien Garden, Hiroshima Airport Dec 2024

Hi,
Some beautiful autumn colours at Sankeien garden ( 5 mins walk from Hiroshima airport terminal on 3rd December ( looked like a few locals were there with their cameras also). On a nice day well worth arriving at Hiroshima airport early to enjoy the garden ( maybe slightly past peak but beautiful). Had a week of warm temperatures ( up to 20degrees celsius on one day -cool in the evenings but a fleece did the job), no rain ,mostly sunshine so saw some stunning autumn colours as well as winter illuminations). Nice time of year to go to Tokyo/Hiroshima)

Hiroshima Dreamination illuminations 2024 ( and the A-dome building)

Whilst in Hiroshima in early December, at night there is the Hiroshima Dreamination winter illuminations along several blocks of Peace Boulevard heading towards the peace memorial museum so after dinner at the Hilton, i took a stroll.
Whilst not as good as some winter illuminations in Tokyo it was interesting and some of the lights were around benches so people could take photos ( quite a few adults with children earlier on then became quieter towards 9pm). one was a disney princess gown with steps behind the lights and a crown on top

A few photos

https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...5fcd0d85d6.jpg
After exploring the Dreamination lights it was a short walk to the A Dome building where it is a different experience at night with it illuminated compared to the daytime) and was virtually the only person around the building at 9pm
