JMSDF Submarine Akishio at Kure
Hi,
Visited Kure ( 35mins on rapid train from Hiroshima) and visited the Yamato Museum ( Maritime Museum) and the JMSDF museum ( beside it) inc going aboard the Diesel electric submarine Akishio ( decommissioned in 2004). Whilst you only visit one deck of the submarine , you can see some crew quarters, the captain's cabin and the control room ( you can look out the periscope at the harbour and sit at the diving controllers seats. Free entry. Very impressive. It had been raining whem walking the wellsign posted covered walkway from the JR station to the Yamato museum but turned out to the a beautiful day https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...cef5d1ddaa.jpg The JMSDF Diesel-electric submarine Akishio taken from the observation deck of the Yamato Museum in Kure ( Jan 2024) Regards TBS |

Nice and slow and relaxing. |
Hiroshima Jan 2024
Hi,
Some photos taken during my 4 night visit to Hiroshima ( then 3 nights in Tokyo) a fortnight ago https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...efc08a6520.jpg The Shukkeien garden in Hiroshima on a Sunday morning https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...71bbb4bd8f.jpg Shukkeien garden https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...91591c7ffb.jpg Shukkeien garden taken from the high point on the path https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...77fa3318ad.jpg Hiroshima Castle. not bad views from the top. Trees had red berries which added some colour contrast https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...d630321bf7.jpg The A-dome building taken from across the river close to the peace clock https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...83e61f250c.jpg The far side of the A-dome building and the peace clock https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...f84ab90e7b.jpg The torri gate of Itsukushima shrine at Miyajima island taken from the beach at 1020 ( tide coming in) https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...750ef08a94.jpg The shrine taken from the west ( towards the Kiyomori shrine) This part was virtually deserted compared to the main parts of Miyajima. Tide coming in https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...94beaaa905.jpg Sideways view of the torri- gate. Shortly, the tide would cover where i was standing ( I was close to the step and kept an eye on the water). A bit of seaweed in the water. A beautiful day to visit Regards TBS |
Sankeien Garden, Hiroshima Airport
Hi,
On my final day in Hiroshima in mid january, I had a 1240 flight back to HND. Rather than going back to the peace park ( 20 mins walk each way from the Hilton ) and being a beautiful day , I decided to get anv earlier bus to the airport and explore the sankeien garden ( 5 mins walk from the terminal). Took the 0950 limousine bus from the JR station, arrived at 1040 at the airport , checked in my bags then spent an hour at the garden before going through security and a quick coffee and soft drink in the JAL sakura lounge before boarding. The garden is absolutely beautiful even in winter and so quiet Some photos https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...938992f328.jpg After the entrance to the garden https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...b553483dde.jpg The waterfall at the top of the park https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...11055dcc30.jpg View from the far end of the garden. Paths generally ok for small wheeled carry ons ( carried it up steps and over the bridges). Loved the small bridges here. Nice view point ( house on left) with picnic tables and a restroom) facing the lake and the airport control tower beyond it) Regards TBS |
Kawazu - Late February Plum Blossoms along the name-sake river
My first visit to this beautiful Izu Peninsula & timely enjoyed the plum blossoms along the river. What a treat! Here are a few images from my visit.

Window Seat: JL305 Business Class, port side window seat
Every time when and if there was an opportunity to see (snap a shot of) Mt. Fuji, I would plan for it. This time, I decided to stay over-night in HND and take an early morning (instead of a night flight that offers better transit time) JL305 HND-FUK in hope to see a picture like this one posted below:
https://photos.smugmug.com/Assets/Ja...SC06273-X2.jpg BTW, I also had the fortune to see Mt. Fuji two more times when on the Shinkansen. Will post those images when time permits. Japan is such a great destination, any time of the year! |

It was a very short trip in mid April, didn’t think we’d get to see cherry blossom in bloom in Tokyo that late. We were very fortunate.
