ETA - and if you do find yourself in Nagoya and want to indulge in Ogura but are gluten intolerant, there’s a Dorayaki Café that has gluten free options:

Was invited to take a brief Nagoya city tour with them. We explored the Shikemichi historic merchant district, then went for some tea and wagashi at Mirume.

Not being familiar with Nagoya, I was chuffed to see that the local konbini had an butter in carry-on sizes.

Thanks for that, I am currently tasting Ogura toast for the first time, found a nice coffee place on the side street from Osu Kannon shopping street.

I don’t think the shop where ogura toast originated (1923 - 満つ葉 Mitsuba ) exists anymore but you were very close to the Sakae area where it used to be.

The invention/introduction came about because the Mitsuba owner was wondering how his wagashi business would survive the 400% price hike in mochi rice. Having seen students soak slices of wheat bread in sweet red bean zenzai/oshiruko soup he got the inspiration to offer toast with sweet red bean paste on it as part of the menu.

I’m sure there are a lot of businesses in Japan right now in a similar dilemma to that of Mitsubaya San back in 1923.

Here is an Ogura Toast from Kako Yanagibashi. Their speciality with whipped cream and 4 different kind of home made jam. The in shop roasted coffee is pretty good as well.

If you stay at Four Points in Chubu Airport, the breakfast buffet has make your own Ogura Toast.

LapLap Oct 7, 2023 3:51 am

Now I’m going to have to to make anko just to see what it’s like covered with toasted cheese.

ETA - Having made tsubuan (ogura) this weekend, I do rather like it with melted cheddar.
For my taste, ogura on toast does yearn for a bit of acidity, so the sour jams in CPH-Flyer’s photo seem like an ideal solution.

Now I have to try it with some egg salad.

The Morning Set is genius. Such a civilized way to have your coffee. It was egg salad and Ogura .

Japan-featuring Zoom webinar.

There are no photographs in this reply, but I place it in this thread because it seems to be the best fit.
This Friday, 13 October, the Central Electric Railfans Association will host Michael Joynt, of the Japanese Railway Society [U.K.], and his Zoom presentation of Japan's private train lines. It will begin at 19:00 hours [GMT-6].
I allow you: Japan Railways (J.R.) hogs the coverage of trains there, particularly amongst visitors (with a death grip on their J.R. Pass :p), but most large cities have lines not operated by J.R.
Michael will present photographs of these other train operators.
C.E.R.A.'s Zoom meetings are open to members and non-members, without advance registration.
Check the C.E.R.A. World-Wide Web page for specifics, or you may private message me. I will be taking this meeting at the abode here. :D

Kanazawa is a great place, with lots of quiet places. A few overrun though.

Yokohama/Tokyo Dec 2023

Hi,

Was in Yokohama and Tokyo last week to see the winter illuminations and fall colours. Weather perfect for 6 of 7 days ( 1 overcast day) with one day at Tokyo Disneyland. So many photo ops but so little time:)/ Had an excellent time ( if a bit tiring at the end of the day)

White Kitte christmas tree at Kitte Building ( beside Tokyo station) .Mostly white but occasionally changes colour to music. Great roof top garden also overlooking tokyo station

West entrance to Shimbashi station ( colours change with music regularly)-santa driving the train!

The Koisihkawa Korakuen garden near tokyo dome. Beautiful fall colours and at times lots of people taking photos of the red bridge
