I would take this info with a grain of salt. The DL 77s have flown DEL-SFO multiple times and have crossed the Wakhan corridor. Additionally the 77Ws on all US flights cross the Wakhan corridor and so does the 788 to IAD. I doubt these planes have custom mods.

The additional oxygen tanks are required for aircraft using those specific routes over the tibetian plateau. AI never uses those, even when using the polar routes to/from the US.

I have (perhaps foolishly) booked an F award on AI using Avianca Lifemiles from YYZ-DEL-SIN (SIN in J - sadly, the YYZ-DEL-MEL F/J award proved too good to be true). I see that in addition to leasing EY 77Ws, AI will be leasing three SQ 4-class 77Ws too which is good news.

Here's hoping for an equipment swap by May next year...

EDIT - looks like the first EY plane - VT-AER - has been delivered.

Read an article earlier today on OMAAT about Air India planning to lease 3 ex-SIA 77W. That definitely represents a massive upgrade from the ancient 2-3-2 configuration.

Looks cool. But will probably do BOM-DEL runs for a while, till they get a second and third plane in.

Does AI name 787s as well, and is there an online database of all the names?

I am in the same boat as you, having booked tickets in J for DEL - YYZ on AI for June 2024

Let's hope the equipment is upgraded to something better than what's currently available.

The Etihad 773s should most likely be in by summer 2024 and should replace all the routes ex-DEL served by the AI 773s. No clue as to where the 359s are gonna go.

my main priority is to have wifi onboard as I can’t be unreachable due to the nature of my job.

I’ve booked it via LifeMiles to secure availability for now and will just eat the cancellation fee if the new fleet option doesn’t support wifi

thank you everyone.

For now AI has no official plan to use the installed equipment on the leased aircraft so I wouldn't have any hopes on that. The existing AI aircraft don't have any equiment installed, so very unlikely to be available in the near future. AI has many other hills to climb right now.
