AI B777 Fleet adjustments (Refurb B77W, Retire B77L, Lease B77E)

Now AI looks to be getting rid of the 3 77Ls in their possession - https://www.airindia.in/images/pdf/T...AL-27Jul22.pdf

Does this mean the end of the BLR-SFO and HYD-ORD routes?

3 of 6 are going out. It seems they only have the fleet required for the two ULH flights. The rest stays with B77W.

So 3 of 6 77Ls go out.

What equipment is used for AI’s ULH SFO/ORD/JFK-DEL flights?

ORD and CHI can be flown with B77W. No ULH required.

A 14+ hour flight fits within my idea of ULH flights, regardless of what kind of equipment is used. SFO, ORD, and JFK non-stop flights to DEL are ULH as far as I’m concerned.

All B77W are being reactivated. The B77L are minimized to just cover the routes a B77W cannot manage (eg SFO). Supposedly the reactivation also includes a refurbishment. Lets see.

They need that refurbishment, whether they get it or not. They also still need to clean the planes better — something I hoped the privatization would have more quickly delivered better.

Seems like there are a few more 77Ws on the way - https://simpleflying.com/air-india-l...x-boeing-777s/

Air India only has 3 77Ls and the plan is to sell all of them. The 3 77Ls perform 10/wk DEL-SFO which has seen 77Ws regularly. With 6 77Ws being leased and 3 77Ws coming back into service, AI should be able to retire the 77L without any disruption.

Now they plan to lease 6 B77L from Delta...

https://economictimes.indiatimes.com...w/93715370.cms

The 5 B738 leased from 9W stock go to AI Express.

Wow. I believe all Delta 777s were updated to Suites before they were retired, and if so, this would be a huge upgrade from AI's POS J seats, even if it is not quite Qatar QSuites. They should just buy these planes and be done with it, and break up their current 777s for parts.

These will have fewer J seats, I believe 28; but if these planes have a crew rest area below, as I think they do, crew will not have to pitch a tent in the back of the J section---a really tacky practice. If so, the effective J capacity is about the same.

Hope they will have these in place for our December trip. Six planes do not cover all NA-India operations---I am not sure which routes will get them, and why.

PS These planes are also GoGo satellite internet equipped; but AI probably won't activate it.

Delta One Suites are fantastic and exponentially better than AI J!

6 planes would cover 2/3 routes maybe DEL/BOM - JFK/EWR/IAD/ORD....

Two? Six planes are certainly enough for 3 routes, since each flight takes much less than 24 hours so 2 planes per route is plenty. Even more if the routes are not served daily.

Note that there are also Canadian destinations.

If they want to be obnoxious they can do as Qatar does nowadays, which is mix their QSuite and non-QSuite planes randomly into their different routes.

The 77L are meant for the YVR/SFO/IAD routes… the B77W will stay and do ORD/NYC/YYC.
