As opposed to using an IBM or Toshiba corp code when you aren't eligible for it?

Yes. Consider robbing a store vs robbing a Salvation Army Santa. One is page 9 in the newspaper, the other is the lead story on the 6pm news. Neither are good, but one is definitely worse than the other.

For your "robbery" analogy to be appropriate, there would need to be a defined limit of dates that Make-A-Wish foundation employees could use for official business stays, in order that something be "stolen" from them. Is that the way that these corporate contracts work?

And if it is stealing, who gets to draw the arbitrary line between "good stealing" and "bad stealing"?

And is using knowledge of this rate to negotiate a better rate for yourself also "stealing"?

I would agree that the "stealing" comparison might be a bit much.

I would be more comfortable comparing it to impersonating a business man vs. impersonating an aid worker.

When confusing situations like this arrise, I like to think "what would George Costanza do".

Ok people, another reminder, we've discussed the ethics of using these codes in the past and now "good" vs "bad" "stealing". A consensus will never be reached on this subject, please discontinue this discussion line, future posts may be deleted.

Thanks.

Was just looking at the GH Bangkok with the IBM rate. When you click on rate details:

******
Rate Description:
IBM CORP ***DO NOT BOOK*** Per IBM policy all travelers are required to make their reservations via the online booking tool or through the authorized Travel Agency This company has a volume pricing agreement with specific Hyatt Hotels. -Rate includes Internet access in room -6 pm cancellation

******

So say someone was eligible to use the IBM rate as a contractor. And has the credentials to prove it. But clearly they don't book through the designated travel agency and instead use hyatt.com. Then what?

Do you expect any of us to be able to give a definitive answer?

This is FT. Make something up!

But in reality, I figure somebody has been in that situation.

An IBM contractor (and apparently Flytertalk fanatic) who, for whatever reason, has eschewed the process that IBM has explained to them, and instead searched out the forbidden code and booked a room at the Grand Hyatt Bangkok on hyatt.com, ignoring all the warnings against doing so in the process?

Should be around any second now.

I work for a large company as well and we have the same rules however for a variety of reasons, I use the public hotel chain website to book rooms probably more often than not and have never been questioned; there are a bunch of reasons why one would do this so I wouldn't think twice about it

That rate is asking to be used .

Why on earth have they got it on the website if they don't want people to book it? At least it should just say "Do Not Book" without listing the benefits.
