Hyatt Regency Amsterdam REVIEW - MASTER THREAD
We were upgraded to a suite here and the room was very large, even by American standards. I haven't been in a regular room, but doubt the rooms are anywhere near as small as I described above...my sincere (and humble and embarrassing) apolgies.
Ok! So! For the Hyatt Regency Amsterdam, the suites are large by every standard, but it is suspected that the regular rooms are not as small as those at the Doubletree Amsterdam. Noted.
(If anyone can comment on the regular room size, or how they handle an extra guest, or whether they allow rollaways, I'm all ears.)

Then decided to see how peoples' experiences actually meted out (if any).
Regency Club was still closed during our stay. Breakfast for Globalist was in the restaurant, which is decent. Evening Happy Hour was from 6-8 at the Bar, with a very limited menu of Mediterranean or Indonesian plate, both rather mediocre. Only beer for Club Happy Hour was Heineken, not surprising but not for beer lovers (my Belgian friends would never touch Heineken). We had dinner first night at hotel restaurant since it was Indonesian. However, the dishes were too sweet for our tastes (maybe the Dutch prefer Indonesian modifies for their tastes?) Regency Club offerings were the poorest among the HR we visited on trip, Paris, Cologne and Mainz.
We took a taxi from Amsterdam Centraal when we arrived, which was expensive at ~20 euro. If traveling light, hotel is easily accessible from Amsterdam Centraal.by tram (better than Metro since no stairs involved).
Location of the hotel is in a quieter part of the city, across the street from University of Amsterdam. Everything in downtown Amsterdam is within 30 minutes walking if so desired. We used 24-hr day passes for Trams
From other commentary elsewhere, I take it Amsterdam is opening up post COVID.
Booked the hotel car so they knew our arrival time. I still emailed to request a 2PM check in prior to arrival.
When I arrive the front desk agent said our suite wasn’t ready. I said “What time do you think?” and he responded “We’re full so it might take a while.”
The time was 2:20PM. I asked if it will be ready at 3PM and he couldn’t confirm.
No apology, simply told we’ll have to wait in the lobby or do something else. Given we’d booked a Regency Exec Suite I said we will wait in the lounge. He had to tap his key at the elevator to let us up. I asked if he could have housekeeping rush the room and he said “I’ve marked your arrival.”
In the end we got to the room at 5PM despite constant promises of 15 or 20 mins each time.
While the room is large and they honoured the request for a quiet room the design is sparse and quite odd. There’s nothing comfortable as the couch creaks each time you sit on it or move.
The bathroom is surprisingly modern, but the glass door to the shower hits the rainfall showerhead do it cannot open more than 1/4 of the way.
You can hear your neighbours and people in the hallway, but the suite has bedroom doors that buffer this.
The permanent Viking Cruises table in the lobby makes the property feel cheap and there’s no mini bar or bottled water in the rooms.

Booked this hotel for 3 nights in AMS using a Premium Suite Upgrade for 9,000 points per night for a Regency Exec Suite - the third best suite on property.
Check In
Booked the hotel car (outsourced) and arrived at 2:20PM. Front desk agent said room wasn't ready. I asked if it was occupied or unclean and he said the last guest checked out at 2PM. I asked when the room would be ready and he said "I don't know, you can leave your bags." I politely and firmly said "Check in is at 3PM, so please rush the room with housekeeping." There was no offer to wait anywhere so I said we'll wait in the lounge. Nothing irks me more than staff who lie. We kept being told 45 then 10 then 15 mins after arriving in the club.
The Lounge Manager was lovely, but after 31 hours of flying we wanted our room. To her credit she went to clean the room herself as the front desk didn't rush it. In the end we got to the room at 5PM. It is ridiculous that she had to clean the room because management and front desk couldn't get housekeeping to do it. I assume she's a former housekeeper, but it is embarassing and unfair.
Room
I appreciate some hotel rooms are 15 or 20 sqm and this room is over 60sqm, but it is simply not functional.
The couch is so uncomfortable and creaks whenever you sit or move on it. The rug is filthy with stains.
The glass doors to the toilet and shower cannot be opened beyond 45 degrees. There is also no mini bar as the fridge is empty.
The air con turns off after an hour based on room sensors, it seems. We had raid the housekeeping cart for toilet paper and Nespresso pods as these were never delivered.
Housekeeping walked in twice while we were in the room and the DND paper sign was on.
The room feels extremely dark, especially with the dark Green paint. You can hear every door open and close and your neighbours as the doors and walls are thin. I did value the window for fresh air.
We have a 'Canal view' which is a sliver, but fine. We chose the back of the hotel because trams run along the front and are very loud. I was warned by mates the hotel is out of the way near the uni, but that was fine.
Dining
The food is of a really high standard, room service and breakfast are both very good.
We were also allowed to order a la carte as we are avoiding buffets where we can.
The Lounge is nothing special sevring bottom shelf liquor. EVen the HR SSH had better alcohol. Snacks are simply cold meat and salads.
Overall
One of the three lifts is out of order and one of the others doesn't recognise swipe cards. The wifi is painfully slow and unusable at times. Despite hearing other guests complain, nothing was done to fix thes issues. They didn't even bother telling guests that the swipe wasn't working so we all kept asking for new cards.
Pride is in town and the Andaz, W, Doubletree are event hubs and space and quietness is most important to us. It is a Green certified hotel and the common areas are pretty. I get that it's after the pandemic, but when you charge RACK, I'm not going to forgive such service failures.
The hotel is full and there's a dedicated Viking Cruise desk in the lobby which feels cheap. Perhaps the worst part is that the GM never responded to my email when we checked in, despite being in communication prior to arrival. Service starts at the top.
Overall, I definitely wouldn't return. I know HR is mid range, but there are some good properties and this one looks good on paper. I don't think I've ever been so happy to leave a hotel!
