As a lawyer who litigates contract disputes, I don't agree (at all) that passage says properties can distinguish award upgrade inventory from cash upgrade inventory. It's simply a statement of fact about the suite category that is eligible for suite upgrade awards (i.e., Standard Suite). Hyatt would have to be allowing properties to impose unwritten restrictions to allow properties to distinguish the two types of inventories.

What is actually going on is properties (others have been reported) are taking advantage of the fact that the system can't confirm a suite upgrade on an award, which means the agent must call the property to confirm the upgrade with the property, to deny upgrades in violation of T&C. That's why the supervisor was able to immediately confirm my upgrade when I switched it to a cash reservation - she required no approval from the property to do that.

What was particularly annoying here is the suite was available for booking via the app for 21k points per night.

Hyatt really needs to fix this. I cringe when I hear the agent on the Glob line saying they have to call the property cuz I know it's now a crapshoot whether or not the property will decide to grant me the Confirmed Suite Upgrade. There really should a Glob contact person (or dept?, like Consumer Affairs) who can deal with hotel shenanigans like this. It boils my blood when my Confirmed Suite Upgrade request gets rejected, and then the Suite that was there 5 mins earlier is quickly pulled by the hotel.

Wow, that's disappointing.

Hope you at least get a decent suite. I was able to find availability for a stay earlier this month to use up expiring SUAs. Cash booking though on a relatively inexpensive rate, so didn't encounter the same issue. Ended up getting a corner suite with a nice view of Puget Sound.

Usually Twitter is the quickest and most effective method to get a TSU applied. I’ve found phone reps have gone down in quality since the pandemic, good ones are few and far between.

I’ve literally had multiple agents and supervisors read Hyatt’s policy word for word with me directly from Hyatt.com then say, “Well that’s not what I was told so I can’t honor it”. Like it’s literally written right there, you found it yourself on your company’s website and it’s your own policy. It astounds me sometimes how these people can have such roles and fail so miserably in them.

Originally booked a king bed room on pts at the HR Lake Washington Seattle with 2 adults and 1 child.
Tried applying SUA via Twitter and the agent told me no suites were available despite what I remembered seeing.
I tried searching for the suite with 2 adults and 1 child and sure enough it didn't show. Changed my search to 2 adults only and the suite comes back.
I cancelled my original reservation and re-booked with only 2 adults. Twitter agent was able to quickly apply the SUA without issue.

Our son still sleeps in a crib or in our bed when we travel so the lack of a second bed is no issue. Just another quirk with how room occupancy is dictated.
Only presidential suite and standard king show up when booking with 2 adults 1 child

Despite the quirks, so far very happy with SUAs

I wish I could say the same.

Staying at Hyatt Regency Phoenix for work Conference this week. Wanted to use a SUA. For months now, the middle day of conference has been sold out (strangely). Now, they have availability that day, including multiple suite types. BUT........they are a part of a "$50 Food and Beverage credit" promo. Twitter said "Please note that the suite must show available under the Standard Rate and cannot be a part of any promotional rates. In checking the availability the suite is not available at this time to confirm the upgrade. The only room type showing available at this time is the 2-Queen Beds. However, please feel free to continue to check with us prior to your arrival as this availability can change. Otherwise, the hotel will do their best to accommodate the request for an upgrade, which will be based on availability at the time of arrival."

The $50 seems so small and nominal as to have just been added to thwart this type of upgrade. I get it, to have the best chances you have to book stuff 12-13 months out. But I would really like to be able to be 4-6 months out and have the ability to use my suite upgrades, otherwise going to be another year where at least some go unused.

That's not kosher. Properties used to try to do this to avoid making base rooms available for awards, and Hyatt shut that practice down. Try your concierge or calling the Globalist line. Twitter is really good at saying "no" (or just ghosting you). And consider complaining to consumer affairs if that doesn't work.

I've never booked that far in advance and haven't had much difficulty burning all my SUAs the past few years. It does depend on the property and timing. Phoenix in March I could see being a challenge.

Suite upgrade award / 8 nights booking

Hello,

anybody has an idea, what happens, if I want to apply a SUA on a 8 nights booking?
Is it not possible? Or does it mean we have to move for one night?

What are the experiences/rules?

I found in the T&C:
"Suite Upgrade Awards count toward the night for which the award was redeemed, regardless of the length of stay. "
Which would mean, you can apply a SUA to a 8 nights booking but probably have to move for one night, right?

Thanks

rules are you would need 2 TSU. You could book the last night separately, apply TSU for 7 nights and try to deal with the hotel directly and see if they would budge.

is the cost very high to book the 8th night directly in the suite? Sometimes worth it. I have done so in similar situattions.

Are you sure?

The thing is, that the 8th night unlocks a better pricing overall.
Get 380 per nicht up to 7 nights an 330 per night from 8 nights.

Book the 8 nights. If you have Globalist concierge, get them to split to 7 nights + 1 night reservations within the same rate
Book the 7 nights for the TSU
Book the last night at the end for the 6000 points standard suite upgrade award.
Advise Front desk prior to arrival that these reservations are back to back. You shouldn't have any issues after that.

This is quite funny!

A concierge will not be able to keep the rate for multiple reasons.

1) It’s outside of Hyatt’s policy to book 7 nights + 1 night and apply a Suite Award. I have tried this and was told they have no choice and must rebook as one reservation.

2) If the rate is only available for 8 nights then when they book as 7 + 1 it will not provide that rate, they will not manually change the rate for you at all.

If your MHC is doing this for you please let me know their name in DM’s so I can request them to be my MHC going forward! I have tried similar requests a dozen times and been denied each time.

Odd application of TSU

I booked a 4 night award and called in to apply the TSU.

After the call, I noticed that the agent canceled my original booking and returned my points.

She then created a new booking noting the TSU. I got a confirmation email of this new booking but it's not showing on my account.

Never seen this before with my other bookings. Is this the correct process?

Yes, this has happened to me. The IT infrastructure for applying TSUs is often lumpy, to put it mildly.
